He didn’t flinch. He tightened his grip on his frost blade, blood pumping hot through his veins.

"After centuries of hiding..." Kael whispered to himself, his eyes ablaze with wild, unyielding fire as he leaped directly into the path of the giant. "Humanity strikes back."

SRASH!

Kael’s boot slammed onto a jagged chunk of fallen marble, propelling him five meters into the air. Mid-vault, he swept his longsword in a wide horizontal arc. A crescent wave of pale, condensed frost magic erupted from the steel, slicing through the air with a razor-sharp hiss.

The frost wave struck three approaching two-meter Aberrants at once, flash-freezing their hide down to the cellular level before the kinetic force tore their torsos from their legs. They shattered into thousands of icy fragments upon hitting the ground.

Kael landed lightly on his feet, spinning instantly on his heel to drive his pommel into the jaw of a fourth beast lunging from his left flank. As the creature stumbled back, Kael channeled a surge of blue mana down the blade, thrusting the sword straight through the brute’s jawline and up into the throat. With a brutal twist of his wrist, he shattered the localized core nexus embedded in its throat armor. The abomination went limp, collapsing into a heap of dissolving dark flesh.

"Form the wedge!" Kael roared, his voice cutting through the chaotic din of battle.

Around him, a strike squad of elite Hero Corps combatants answered his call. An earth-element hero slammed his broad palms against the shattered cobble, raising a three-meter wall of jagged granite that funneled the incoming wave of beasts into a narrow choke point.

From behind the wall, two fire mages unleashed twin streams of high-intensity crimson flame, scorching the beasts’ outer hides.

Kael leaped over the earthen barricade, his frost sword executing three fluid, lethal strikes—a high slash to sever an arm, a low sweep to crush a knee, and a precision thrust that pierced another throat core. Beside him, a female hero wielding twin wind-infused daggers blurred through the shadows, carving open throats while Kael provided absolute defensive coverage with his ice shields.

Step by step, the team moved in perfect, lethal synchronization. Frost froze the targets; wind and fire shattered their defenses; steel finished the core.

Behind their line, the Royal Guard infantry advanced with heavy iron shields locked together, spearing any beasts that managed to slip past the elemental heroes. Armor clattered against stone, screams rang out, and blood painted the ruined streets, but for a brief, glorious ten minutes, the human line held firm against the sea of purple hide.

Kael killed his thirtieth Aberrant with a clean decapitation, his longsword dripping with thick, dark violet fluid.

He dropped to one knee on a heap of dead beasts, his lungs burning like hot coals, his chest heaving as sweat trickled into his eyes. Around him, the endless swarm of two-meter man-eaters showed no sign of thinning—they continued to pour through the broken outer ramparts like a relentless, tide of teeth and claws.

Suddenly, the heavy, earth-shaking thuds of the eighteen-meter titan halted.

Kael snapped his head up, wiping a streak of black blood from his forehead.

Through the dense smoke, he saw the colossal Siege-class behemoth turn its massive, grotesque frame around. The titan didn’t attack the inner line. Instead, it broke into a heavy, lumbering stride, retreating back toward the outer plains beyond the city walls.

Kael’s brow furrowed into a tight, suspicious pinch.

’Why is it pulling back? It had the momentum. It could have flattened this whole avenue in seconds...’

A sudden rustle of wind above him snapped him out of his thoughts. An Aberrant dropped from a ruined archway, its claws outstretched toward his neck. Kael didn’t even look—he raised his left hand, touching the beast’s chest. A instantaneous surge of frost encasing its body mid-air. He swung his sword upward, cleaving the frozen head clean off before the corpse hit the dirt.

As he watched the massive titan disappear into the distant ash cloud, a grim realization settled in Kael’s gut like lead.

The titan’s sudden appearance had never been an attempt to breach the entire capital on its own. Its sole purpose was to act as a living siege engine—to smash Evelyn’s spatial barrier, tear down the front walls, and open a wide, permanent breach for the infinite swarm to flood in.

It had accomplished its task. Now, it was letting the swarm do the rest.

"AAAHHHHH!"

A blood-curdling shriek shattered the air from the western flank.

Kael spun around, his breath catching in his throat.

Fifty yards away, the Royal Guard phalanx had completely collapsed. The two-meter Aberrants were no longer just rushing blindly into spears. Their bodies were undergoing a violent, sickening metamorphosis mid-combat.

Their purple hide thickened, expanding into dark, obsidian-like bone plates that easily deflected standard iron spears. More horrifyingly, the glowing red core nexus located in their lower throats sank deeper into their torsos, sliding down behind their ribcages where thick, armored hide sealed over the vital spot. Their claws elongated into jagged, serrated bone blades, and their jaws split into three flexible mandibles.

"They... they’re mutating!" a fire hero shrieked, backing away as his fireballs bounced harmlessly off the reinforced bone plates of an evolving beast. "How can they evolve this fast?!"

The battlefield devolved into an absolute slaughterhouse.

An evolved Aberrant lunged across the stone, its serrated claw sweeping through three Royal Guards in a single motion. The heavy steel breastplates sheared like parchment. Entrails and bright red blood sprayed across the cobblestones as the guards were torn to pieces before they could even scream.

Another beast slammed a knight to the ground, pinning his arms before plunging its three-part mandible directly into the man’s throat. The sound of crunching cartilage and bone echoed sickeningly through the air. A third guard was seized by his legs by two separate beasts—they pulled in opposite directions, ripping the soldier in half with a wet, heavy tear.

Fresh, warm human blood pooled into the cracked stones, filling the air with a choking, metallic stench. The evolved Aberrants didn’t just kill; they tore the corpses into chunks of meat, fighting among themselves to gorge on the flesh, their eyes burning with an even wilder, more terrifying crimson light as they devoured the fallen.

"Hold the line! Protect the rear—AAAGH!"

A veteran spear hero, a man who had served the kingdom for fifteen years, was tackled by a pack of four evolved beasts. He channeled his remaining mana into his spear, driving it through one beast’s eye, but the other three descended on him like vultures. His armor was ripped away in seconds. His screams of agonizing horror cut off abruptly as teeth crunched through his chest cavity, pulling out dripping organs while he was still conscious.

A young female archer attempted to leap onto a ruined roof to gain high ground, but a shadow portal—a pool of swirling, purple miasma—erupted beneath her feet. A clawed arm shot out from the black pool, grabbing her ankle and dragging her down into the dirt. Four beasts swarmed her instantly, their claws tearing off her limbs one by one as she screamed for help that never came. Her severed arm was tossed across the dirt, still clutching her wooden bow.

Those who panicked and broke rank to run were hunted down with brutal efficiency. The beasts swept behind the fleeing soldiers, hooking their long, serrated claws into their spines, dragging them backward into the shadow pools where dozens of jaws waited to tear them apart.

Kael stood rooted to the spot, his hands trembling violently as he held his frost blade. Cold sweat soaked his tunic beneath his armor.

It wasn’t a random mutation. It was their fundamental biological trait.

These Aberrants were apex predators designed for consumption. Every drop of human blood they ingested, every piece of mana-infused flesh they devoured, accelerated their evolution. The more soldiers they slaughtered, the stronger, faster, and more resilient the horde became.

The entire capital was no longer a battleground—it was a feeding trough.

The sky above turned into a dark, suffocating slate grey as heavy, ash-laden clouds blotted out the last rays of sunlight. The scent of copper and burnt hair was so thick it left a bitter taste on the back of the tongue.

Around Kael, dozens of purple miasma pools opened on the stone ground. Evolved Aberrants slithered out from the dark fluid, their long, bone-plated limbs clicking against the blood-slicked stones. Hundreds of glowing red eyes fixed onto Kael’s solitary figure, their mandibles twitching as acidic saliva dripped from their fangs.

"GRRRRRRRR..."

The guttural growls resonated from every alleyway, every ruined roof, every pile of rubble.

Kael was completely surrounded.

---

The Starlight Kingdom, a realm that had stood proudly for hundreds of years, was no more. Its white towers were dust, its streets were rivers of blood, and its soil was completely overrun by the ancient dark strain.

Humanity’s last survivors had been driven from their ancestral home, fleeing like homeless refugees through the dark highway toward Lumiria—the final, isolated settlement holding out under the banner of Ren.

Behind them, the cost of their retreat was written in the severed limbs, crushed armor, and gnawed bones left scattered across the capital’s ruins.

Commander Kael and Commander Aether had managed to break through the final blockade, rallying the remaining, broken remnants of their forces to pull back. They abandoned the dead. They abandoned the fallen. They retreated because to stay meant absolute extinction.

Yet, as the surviving guards stumbled across the border into Lumiria, a heavy, suffocating shadow hung over every soldier’s mind.

Was this truly a struggle for survival... or was it merely a prolonged, agonizing execution?

When a leader sends hundreds of brave men and women into a meat grinder, promising them that their sacrifice will buy time for a tomorrow that never comes—can that leader truly be called a protector? Or are they merely a butcher wearing the mask of a commander, trading human lives for a few extra hours of borrowed time?

Kael looked down at his blood-stained gauntlets, his mind trapped in a dark, unending nightmare. The screams of his men being eaten alive echoed in his ears with every heartbeat. He had fought. He had led. He had sacrificed everything to protect the realm.

And in return, the realm was gone, and his hands were soaked in the blood of those who had trusted him to lead them home.

Is humanity’s struggle against the dark an honorable stance of defiance... or is it nothing more than the pathetic, futile thrashing of a creature already caught in the jaws of a predator?

For centuries, humanity believed that with enough training, enough strategy, and enough sacrifice, they could eventually reclaim the sky. But as the Starlight Kingdom fell in a single day, a terrifying question began to whisper in the hearts of the broken survivors:

*Was humanity ever meant to win? Or was victory always an illusion fed to the blind?*

As the survivors crossed into the quiet, heavily fortified borders of Lumiria, they looked toward the central district—toward the young man who held a power that defied the very laws of this world.

Under the leadership of Ren, within the bounds of a system that operated outside the realm’s ancient curse... could the debt of blood finally be repaid?

Or was Ren’s domain simply the final stage upon which the last curtain of humanity would fall?

In a world broken by a thousand years of defeat, perhaps the gods had finally sent a savior to shatter the night... or perhaps his arrival was merely the signal for the ultimate, absolute end.
