I Am the Dark God's Fragment: My System Turns Destruction Into Power
Chapter 64: The Crucible of Lumiria
Or was Ren’s domain simply the final stage upon which the last curtain of humanity would fall?
In a world broken by a thousand years of defeat, perhaps the gods had finally sent a savior to shatter the night... or perhaps his arrival was merely the signal for the ultimate, absolute end.
---
One month later.
Following the total collapse and destruction of the Starlight Kingdom, the surviving remnants of humanity had gathered within the fortified borders of Lumiria.
Under Ren’s absolute leadership, the small, once-overlooked border settlement had undergone a staggering, almost miraculous transformation. Where once stood quiet dirt roads and wooden huts, a grand, majestic white palace now towered at the heart of the territory. It served not only as the administrative core of the government, but as a sanctuary where commoners could directly voice their grievances, receive rations, and petition for aid.
At the base of the palace grounds, Ren had established the new Royal Hero Academy. Unlike the elitist institution of the old capital, this academy served a dual purpose. It was a refined training facility for those possessing rare elemental gifts, as well as a centralized intake office where ordinary citizens could report monster sightings, territorial disputes, or logistical supply shortages. Every claim was logged, categorized, and dispatched to active hero squads under Ren’s direct oversight, drastically cutting down response times across the region.
The rapid expansion of Lumiria had become a beacon of genuine hope for the displaced populace.
Generous food distribution networks, structured residential districts with sturdy stone housing, structured military barracks, and sprawling drill fields had replaced the temporary refugee camps. The traumatized survivors, once hollowed out by grief and displacement, had begun to find a rhythm to their lives again. Markets bustled with trade, blacksmith fires burned through the night, and children played along the paved avenues.
What was once dismissed as a backwater territory had evolved into the undisputed heartland of human civilization.
---
On the northern perimeter of the main armed military grounds, Ren stood near the timber railing, his arms folded neatly across his chest as he observed the training field below.
The heat of the midday sun beat down on hundreds of recruits—both men and women—dressed in durable, olive-drab tactical uniforms. They stood in disciplined, staggered lines, their hands gripping heavy firearms that had never existed in this world before: high-caliber assault rifles, heavy machine guns, sidearms, and long-range bolt-action sniper rifles.
Downrange, dozens of wooden target dummies were positioned across simulated trenches, dense brush, and earthen embankments. Each dummy was painted with precise red target zones indicating the core vital areas of Aberrant physiology—the lower throat, the central ribcage, and the base of the skull.
At the front of the formation, Ryu paced back and forth like a prowling wolf, his posture immaculate, his dark eyes sharp and unyielding.
"Keep those shoulders squared!" Ryu barked, his iron voice echoing across the gravel grounds. "If you drop your stance, the recoil from a fifty-caliber burst will snap your collarbone before you even hit the target!"
A young recruit in the third row, his arms trembling under the weight of a heavy light-machine gun, let out a soft groan as sweat dripped into his eyes. "Instructor... this steel beast is too heavy... My forearms are completely numb..."
Beside him, an older recruit wiped his brow, muttering under his breath, "We don’t have mana... We don’t have elemental cores... How are a bunch of iron pipes supposed to stop an eighteen-meter monster?"
Ryu stopped dead in his tracks. He turned slowly, his gaze locking onto the two men with icy, lethal intensity.
The entire field went dead silent.
"Too heavy?" Ryu asked, his voice dropping into a dangerous, low raspy growl. He stepped up to the young recruit, towering over him. "You think a twenty-pound rifle is heavy? Try carrying the weight of your family’s corpses after an Aberrant tears them in half because you were too weak to hold the line!"
The young recruit swallowed hard, casting his eyes toward the dirt.
Ryu swept his gaze across the entire formation, his expression cold and razor-sharp.
"Look at yourselves!" Ryu shouted, his words slicing through the humid air like a physical blade. "You complain because you weren’t born with fire in your veins or wind at your fingertips! You look at the Hero Corps and call them ’blessed’ while you pity yourselves as useless bystanders! But let me tell you a fundamental truth about this war—magic didn’t save the Starlight Kingdom! Elite heritage didn’t stop the capital from turning into a graveyard!"
He struck his own chest plate with a heavy gauntlet, producing a loud, metallic clatter.
"These weapons in your hands do not care about your bloodline! They do not care if you are a noble or a gutter orphan! When you pull that trigger, the lead doesn’t ask if you have a magic core—it tears through purple hide all the same!"
Ryu stepped closer to the middle ranks, his eyes burning with an intense, unyielding conviction.
"If you give up here, if you fold because your arms hurt and the drills are tough, then accept your fate right now! Go back to your tents, sit in the dark, and wait for the Aberrants to come eat your children! Because if you don’t fight, if you don’t master these weapons, your sons and daughters will spend their entire lives cowering in the mud, waiting for the sky to fall!"
The harsh, unvarnished reality hit the recruits like a bucket of ice water. The young soldier who had complained tightened his jaw. He wiped the sweat from his eyes, hoisted the heavy machine gun back onto his shoulder, and planted his boots firmly into the dirt.
Around him, a collective wave of resolve washed over the recruits. Those who had been slumping straightened their backs. Hands that had been trembling stabilized around rifle grips.
"Again! Load and present arms!" Ryu roared.
"Sir, yes, sir!" the entire regiment shouted in unison, their voice echoing across the military complex as the sharp, metallic clatter of bolts chambering rounds filled the air.
Ren leaned against the railing, a quiet, satisfied smile touching his lips.
Beside him, Evelyn stood in shadow beneath the wooden awning. Her long, dark blue hair brushed against her shoulders, her dark blue gown rustling softly in the warm breeze. She watched the recruits cycle through their reloading drills with a complex, unreadable expression in her sapphire eyes.
"Ren," Evelyn spoke softly, her voice barely carrying over the distant sound of rifle fire. "Do you truly believe these armed corps... these ordinary people using your strange iron weapons... can actually stand against the Aberrants when the time comes?"
Ren turned his head, his posture relaxed, his eyes shining with absolute confidence. "I don’t just believe it, Evelyn. I know they can. In a war of attrition, numbers and standardized firepower beat individual talent every single time."
Evelyn stared down at the field, her fingers lightly tracing the wood of the railing. Her gaze was distant, heavy with memories she couldn’t wash away. "A month ago, I watched thousands of trained knights crumble in minutes. They had magic. They had enchanted armor. Yet they were devoured like insects..."
Ren watched her carefully. He noticed the slight, nearly imperceptible quiver in her fingers.
He stepped closer, reaching out to pat her shoulder gently. "Relax, Evelyn. We’re going to take back the Starlight Kingdom. Brick by brick, inch by inch. I promise you."
The moment his palm touched her shoulder, Evelyn’s movement was instant. She raised her hand and casually swatted his arm away with a swift, dismissive flick of her wrist.
Ren froze mid-pose, scratching the back of his neck with a sheepish, awkward chuckle. "Haha... right. My bad, got a little too excited there."
Evelyn didn’t laugh. She kept her eyes fixed on the horizon, her tone soft, almost fragile beneath her stoic exterior. "Can we really take it back...? The entire capital is a breeding ground for those evolving nightmares now..."
Ren’s smile faded slightly. He shifted his posture, looking up at the clear afternoon sky where the sun hung bright above Lumiria.
In truth, deep within his own mind, a shadow of doubt existed.
One month ago, when the flood of bloodied survivors and screaming refugees had poured through Lumiria’s gates, Ren had been thoroughly shaken. The raw, grotesque horror of the catastrophe described by Kael, Aether, and the surviving heroes was far beyond anything he had anticipated.
He had acted instantly, leveraging his System interface to summon structural blue-prints, spend accumulated points on high-density stone walls, clear agricultural land, and synthesize mass quantities of medical supplies and canned rations. He had fortified Lumiria’s perimeter with automated wire traps, anti-personnel mines, and heavy ballista emplacements.
Yet, Ren himself had not personally faced the evolved dark strain that had flattened the capital. He had only heard the horrific reports of core-shifting beasts and titan-class monstrosities.
He knew that theory meant nothing until iron met flesh. But as a leader, showing hesitation meant death for everyone relying on him.
"We won’t know until we hit them with everything we’ve got," Ren said, turning fully to face her. "Magic and elemental traits are powerful, but they exhaust the user’s mana reserves. Firearms and artillery, however, don’t rely on stamina. If we combine your high-tier elemental magic with mass-produced modern ballistics... our combat potential won’t just double. It’ll explode."
Evelyn looked at him, her dark eyes reflecting his image.
"And more importantly," Ren added, his voice dropping into a serious, gentle register, "you need to stop trying to carry the world on your own shoulders, Evelyn."
Her pupils dilated slightly at his words.
"You’re a princess, but you’re not immortal," Ren continued, extending his open hand toward her. "You failed to hold the capital because the odds were stacked against you from the start, not because you were weak. No single person can win a war alone. We have to share the load. Let’s stand together and face them as a unified force."
Evelyn stared at his open palm.
For the past thirty days, her mind had been a dark, suffocating prison. Every time she closed her eyes, she saw the shattered white walls, the weeping orphans, and the horrific images of her people being torn apart while she hovered helplessly in the sky, exhausted of mana. The guilt of surviving while her kingdom burned had weighed on her soul like a mountain.
Slowly, deliberately, Evelyn raised her right hand. She placed her fingers in Ren’s palm, wrapping them around his hand in a firm, silent agreement.
Ren’s smile returned, genuine and warm.
"Hey! Ren! Sister!"
A frantic, breathless voice shattered the moment.
Elysia came sprinting up the wooden staircase leading to the observation platform, her face pale, slick with cold sweat. Her chest heaved violently as she clutched her side, gasping for air.
Ren’s expression instantly hardened. Evelyn’s hand slid out of his grip as she stepped forward, her brow furrowing in sharp concern.
"Elysia?" Ren asked, stepping toward her. "What happened? Why are you out of breath?"
"Out... outside..." Elysia wheezed, pointing a trembling finger back toward the southern highway beyond the city walls. "The scouts... the outer watchtowers just flared their red signals!"
Evelyn’s heart skipped a beat. "What is it?!"
"Aberrants!" Elysia cried out, her voice cracking with terror. "A massive swarm... thousands of them! They’re marching directly toward Lumiria’s main gate!"
Ren’s jaw tightened. "Dammit... already?!"
"We don’t have time to waste," Ren barked, his calm demeanor vanishing instantly as he turned toward the drill field. "We need to activate the defense protocol and mobilize the gate garrisons now!"
Before Ren could take three steps, a cold, suffocating pressure radiated from beside him.
He paused, looking over his shoulder.
Evelyn stood still, her fingers clenched so tightly into her palms that her knuckles turned stark white. Her head was lowered, dark bangs shadowing her eyes, but the aura radiating from her body was terrifyingly cold.
A low, guttural murmur escaped her lips—a tone dripping with pure, unadulterated venom.
"I’ll slaughter every single one of them..." Evelyn whispered, her voice trembling not with fear, but with an overwhelming, vengeful rage that had been boiling beneath her skin for a month.
Ren stared at her for a split second, taking in the fierce, lethal glare in her sapphire eyes. The hollow, traumatized princess who had spent thirty days drowning in silence was gone. In her place stood a sovereign ready to exact blood for blood.
’Finally... she’s back,’ Ren thought, a sharp, grim edge entering his own eyes.
"Ryu!" Ren yelled at the top of his lungs, leaping over the wooden platform railing and landing cleanly on the gravel field below. "Emergency deployment! All regiments, load live ammunition and fall back to the main wall! Move!"
HOOOOOOOOOOOOONK!
HOOOOOOOOOOOOONK!
The warning sirens across Lumiria blared in long, agonizing wails.
The sound tore through the peaceful streets of the settlement like a sudden lightning strike.
"The sirens! It’s the red signal!"
"Monsters! The Aberrants are at the gate!"
"Run! Get to the inner shelters! Move, move, move!"
Panic erupted across the commercial avenues. Merchants abandoned their stalls, parents scooped up their children from the paved walkways, and commoners scrambled in utter chaos, rushing toward the heavy stone bunkers built near the base of the palace. The temporary peace that had lasted for thirty days shattered in an instant.
Ren, Evelyn, and Elysia sprinted against the tide of fleeing citizens, their boots pounding against the stone roads as they headed directly toward the northern main gate.
They reached the top of the forty-foot outer rampart, stepping alongside the heavily armed guards and Hero Corps veterans stationed along the battlement.
Ren rested his hands on the stone parapet, leaning over to look out across the northern plain.
His breath hitched.
The wide dirt plain stretching out from the gate was no longer brown. It was a writhing, chaotic ocean of dark purple hide.
Thousands of two-meter Aberrants—their bodies already displaying reinforced bone plating, serrated claws, and glowing crimson eyes—were surging forward like a torrential wave. The sheer kinetic weight of their march caused the earth to vibrate violently, kicking up a massive wall of dust that obscured the horizon.
They moved with singular, terrifying purpose, their maws dripping with acidic drool, their hungry gazes locked onto the gleaming walls of Lumiria.
Ren’s eyes dilated as he took in the sheer scale of the horde.
The month of peace was over. The nightmare of the Starlight Kingdom had tracked the survivors to their final sanctuary.
And this time, there was nowhere left to run.
