Ren’s eyes dilated as he took in the sheer scale of the horde.

The month of peace was over. The nightmare of the Starlight Kingdom had tracked the survivors to their final sanctuary.

And this time, there was nowhere left to run.

Beside him atop the rampart, Evelyn and Elysia stood frozen. Their breath hitched in their throats as they looked out over the writhing ocean of dark purple hide stretching to the horizon.

Before the vanguard of the horde could take another hundred strides toward the base of the white stone wall, the earth beneath them erupted.

BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!

A rapid-fire series of thunderous detonations shook the perimeter. High-explosive landmines embedded beneath the soil detonated in unison, unleashing violent plumes of fire, shrapnel, and scorching pressure waves. The kinetic impact tore through the dense vanguard, blowing dozens of two-meter Aberrants into ragged chunks of meat and bone. Limbs, shattered hides, and dark violet blood were tossed high into the air as the blast radius swept across the front rank, instantly clearing a fifty-yard kill zone.

A thin, cold smirk touched the corner of Ren’s mouth.

Evelyn’s head snapped toward him, her jaw slightly slack. "What... how did you do that?"

Elysia’s eyes were wide, her mouth agape as she watched the smoke clear over the cratered earth, revealing hundreds of severed monster torsos littering the field. "The ground just... tore them apart..."

"Anti-personnel landmines," Ren explained, his voice calm and laced with quiet pride. "Pressure-sensitive fuses. Step on the plate, and fifty grams of high explosive detonates under your boots."

Elysia nudged his elbow with a sharp, excited grin. "Look at you, Ren! You really thought of everything, didn’t you?"

Ren puffed out his chest slightly, adjusting his collar. "Preparation beats panic every time."

"Hold on," Evelyn interjected, her tone dropping into a sharp, icy register. She stepped up to the edge of the battlements, her eyes narrowing as she pointed a finger down at the cratered killing field. "Don’t start celebrating yet. Look at the bodies."

Ren’s smile vanished. He leaned over the parapet, his eyes narrowing through the drifting grey haze.

Down on the scorched dirt, the torn flesh and severed limbs were not rotting or turning to dust. Instead, thick strands of pulsing, violet light stretched out between the dismembered chunks of hide. The shattered torsos twitched violently. With a sickening, wet crunching sound, the flesh pulled itself back together, reattaching bone to bone and sealing torn tissue in seconds.

The hundreds of Aberrants that had just been blown to pieces scrambled back onto their clawed feet. Their stacked crimson eyes burned brighter, filled with a primal, ravenous rage as they resumed their surge toward the gate.

"Don’t panic," Ren said quietly, his eyes cold as he looked up.

High above them on the main gatehouse ramparts, the newly trained Armed Military Corps surged into position.

Dressed in olive tactical gear, the squads fell into disciplined firing lines behind heavy sandbag emplacements. Mounted Gatling guns, heavy caliber machine guns, and long-barrel bolt-action sniper rifles were instantly leveled over the stone parapets. At the center of the formation, a senior sergeant chosen by Ryu drew his combat knife and pointed it directly down at the advancing wave.

"Racks loaded! Ready!" the sergeant’s voice boomed over the wind. "Aim for the lower throats and chest plates! Core targets only! Free fire!"

TAK-TAK-TAK-TAK-TAK-TAK!

RAT-TAT-TAT-TAT-TAT-TAT!

A deafening wall of sound tore through the sky as hundreds of automatic weapons opened fire simultaneously.

Tracer rounds cut bright green lines through the dust. The storm of heavy-caliber lead slammed into the charging horde with terrifying precision. High-velocity sniper rounds punched through reinforced skull plates, shattering the core nexuses hidden within their throats.

Where magic had once required time to chant and channel, the steady hail of iron delivered instant, continuous kinetic destruction. Aberrant after Aberrant crumpled as their chest cores were pulverized. The moment their core nexuses shattered under the concentrated lead fire, their bodies didn’t regenerate—they collapsed into heaps of steaming, purple vapor that dissolved into the wind.

The soldiers roared in unison, cycling magazines with practiced, fluid movements, keeping up a relentless curtain of fire that pinned the vanguard in place.

Evelyn watched the display, her breath catching. "Is this... the squad we saw on the drill field earlier?"

Ren nodded beside her. "That’s them. Commoners with no magic talent, wielding standardized firearms. Impressive, isn’t it?"

Evelyn gave a slow, automatic nod, her eyes fixed on the crumbling front line of the swarm.

"Still," Elysia chimed in, leaning over the stone wall, "doesn’t those iron weapons have a limit? What happens when they run out of those little metal lead pieces?"

Ren didn’t deny it. He kept his eyes on the firing line, listening to the heavy brass casings clattering against the stone floor. "You’re right. Firepower is absolute, but ammunitions are finite."

"Then what’s the plan when the barrels go cold?" Evelyn asked, looking back at him.

Ren turned his head, looking toward the main stairwell leading up from the palace courtyard. "That’s why we don’t fight alone."

A heavy, disciplined crunch of armored boots rang out from the stone stairs.

A regiment from the Royal Hero Academy swept onto the battlements, their long spell-caster robes snapping in the wind. At the head of the formation stood Kael, his hand resting on the hilt of his frost longsword, his face stern and focused.

"Maintain formation!" Kael ordered, his voice cutting through the gunfire. "Mages to the rear parapets! Vanguard spell-swords cover the stairwells!"

The military recruits on the wall let out a ragged cheer as the heroes arrived.

"Ration your mags! The Hero Corps is here to cover the cycle!" a machine gunner yelled, gesturing for his assistant to grab fresh ammunition crates brought up from the armory below.

The integration was seamless. As the military squads paused to swap out red-hot gun barrels and load fresh magazines, the element-trained heroes stepped into the gaps. Fire mages unleashed concentrated streams of flame to incinerate the beasts trapped in the wire entanglements, while wind spell-swords leaped over the barricades, using refined footwork to decapitate any Aberrants that managed to scale the outer stone wall.

When a beast lunged at an exposed archer, a nearby military rifleman instantly put three rounds through the beast’s chest core, saving the spell-caster. The combination of modern ballistic suppression and tactical magic created an impenetrable defense.

Kael marched straight toward the observation platform, stopping two paces away to execute a crisp, formal salute to Ren, Evelyn, and Elysia.

"Lord Ren, Princess Evelyn," Kael said, bowing his head slightly. "The Hero Corps has deployed to support the gate defense as instructed."

Ren let out a light, self-deprecating laugh, reaching out to catch Kael’s forearm to straighten him up. "Cut the formal stuff, Kael. We’re all in the same boat trying to protect what’s left."

Kael straightened, his eyes glowing with genuine respect as he looked at Ren. "The close-quarters footwork and tactical maneuvers you introduced to our training regimens have already saved dozens of lives today. Our heroes are fighting with an efficiency we never possessed in the old capital."

Ren gave a firm nod. "Good to hear."

Beside them, Evelyn remained quiet. Her sapphire eyes shifted from the burning battlefield back to Ren’s face. The flickering light of gunpowder flashes and elemental flame reflected in her gaze, highlighting a sudden, intense seriousness in her posture. She clenched her hands into tight fists at her sides.

"Ren," Evelyn spoke, her voice dropping into a low tone that cut straight through the surrounding noise. "Who are you, really?"

Ren’s breath caught slightly. He turned his head to look at her, surprised by the sudden, blunt question.

Elysia turned as well, her eyes wide as she looked back and forth between her sister and Ren.

Ren blinked, trying to gauge her expression. *Why is she asking this now? She’s seen me build structures out of thin air for a month. Did she finally hit her limit?*

"At first," Evelyn continued, her gaze locked onto his eyes without flinching, "I assumed you were simply someone blessed by the divine—a mortal chosen by the gods to manifest matter from nothingness to rebuild our world. But these weapons..."

She gestured toward the military firing line, where brass casings were flying through the air.

"A power that creates matter should only recreate what the mind already understands," Evelyn said, her voice laced with deep suspicion and curiosity. "You didn’t just build stone walls and houses. You introduced concepts that have never existed in any historical archive of this world. Heavy iron rifles, automated mechanics, unfamiliar military doctrines, and martial styles that bypass traditional mana channels completely."

She stepped a inch closer to him, her eyes searching his face.

"You brought an entire civilization’s worth of warfare, technology, and knowledge with you. It’s as if... you don’t belong to this world at all."

Her words hung heavily in the air between them.

Around them, the roar of gunfire, the crackle of fire magic, and the screeches of dying monsters continued to shake the earth, but on the small stone platform, the silence between Ren and Evelyn was absolute.
