I Am Zeus

Chapter 424: Erasure Cult Breach

  • Next Chapter

The scouts were only the first teeth.

By the time the nine and their Threshold allies cleared the gray court, the erasure cult had already shoved a breach line through the outer terraces. Pale armor, etched with termination script, swept in like paid for a route into Ashen Threshold and intended to recoup the cost. No capture teams. No claim talk. Blades and ending law from the first contact.

"They brought a real kill company," Vespera said.

Nyxara’s seals flared along her spear. "Then we make the terraces expensive."

The fight swept to ruin without staging. Ash avenues. Collapsed judgment balconies. Broken den stairs. The cult used width. The nine used denser violence in close quarters. Athena cut the throat seal of the first officer before he could finish a termination mark over Zeus. Kratos ran through a shield wall and kept running until it had been bodies. Poseidon ripped a whole terrace slab sideways and dropped a squad into a lower trench. Sun Wukong bounced from rail to rail, staff cracking helmets with ugly joy. Odin pinned a caster to a column and let Hermes peel the route charms from his belt. Loki turned one cult signal against its own rear line and watched the confusion with thin satisfaction.

Zeus fought in short controlled bursts. Residual force still ached over the gallery tear, the grounding that had followed. He kept it tight. Every time a cult blade angled for his chest, Nyxara or Vespera was already there, local and vicious. They fought as if the terraces were home ground and these outsiders an insult.

"Left stair!" Athena cried.

A second wave of cult swept down from higher ruin bridge, intending to box them against a dead fountain court. Hades turned, green fire rising and met them head-on, death-pressure slamming the first three to silence. It was not enough. More poured through.

Sable appeared at his flank as if the ash had spit her out. "With me. Death-lane. We cut their bridge support or this court becomes a grave bowl."

Hades did not argue. He followed.

They broke side ways into a narrow ruin corridor under the bridge, a death-lane of collapsed crypt mouths and old Threshold bone-law. Cult soldiers attempted to force it behind them. Sable bound the corridor mouth with hard script while Hades tore through those already inside. They moved well together, no wasted speech. She opened. He ended. He broke a line. She sealed the pieces so they could not rise under residual echoes.

At the bridge support, three cult engineers had already been etching collapse marks that would have dropped stone onto the nine below. Hades hit them like a landslide. Sable locked the support with binder threads and killed the last engineer herself when he attempted to trigger a suicide seal.

The flank held.

For a moment the death-lane went quiet, save for their breathing and the larger battle roaring beyond the stone.

Sable looked at Hades with ash on her cheek and live heat in her eyes. The chemistry had been building since the gallery trap but had no politics in it anymore. She shoved him back into a sealed side crypt off the lane, mouthed a binding shut across the entrance, and kissed him like the fight had sand every careful distance away.

Hades answered the same way.

There was no slow discovery. Grief, violence, recognition, all hit the same nerve. Armor straps tore. Pale bindings loosened under his hands. Sable bit his lower lip hard enough to draw a point of blood and pulled him into her against the crypt wall. The encounter was immediate and physical, a clash more than a comfort, two death-touched beings using friction and force to prove they were still on the living side of the line. When it broke, they still found themselves locked together for one hard breath, foreheads pressed, the battle still thundering beyond.

"You fight cleaner when you are not chasing soft light," Sable said against his mouth.

Hades’s voice was rough. "And you make a habit of dragging men out of endings."

"Only some of them," she said, already restoring her bindings. "Come. The flank will not stay held if we linger in a crypt."

They pushed back into the main fight as the bridge above finally cracked the other way and dumped the remaining upper cult line into Poseidon’s waiting trench.

The ruin court became cleanup violence after that. Nyxara gutted a cult captain who had been aiming termination law at Zeus’s back. Vespera took two more from the side and kicked a third into Sun Wukong’s downswing. Athena kept the center from fraying. Zeus forced residual heat into one controlled shock that broke the last organized knot of pale armor without ripping another Threshold seal open.

Then it was over in the local sense.

Bodies in pale termination plate littered the terraces. Ash settled on open eyes. The nine stood bloodied and upright. Nyxara, Vespera, and Sable stood with them, making suddenly less like local help and more like a shared sentence.

Hermes turned one dead officer with his boot and froze.

"What?" Loki asked.

Hermes lifted a charm from the corpse belt. Not just a Zeus-mark. Layered target script. Carrier first. Then any Threshold woman carrying active bond-signs to the seed line.

Athena took the charm, read it once, and her face hardened. "They are not only hunting Zeus."

Nyxara saw the script over Athena’s shoulder and cursed in a Threshold tongue that needed no translation. "They marked me."

Vespera’s eyes went cold. "And me."

Sable’s voice was quieter and no less lethal. "And anyone who pulled him or his dead-brother out of a trap. This cult is pruning helpers, not only the seed."

Poseidon wiped blood from his mouth. "So helping us is now a kill reason."

"Yes," Vespera said. "Which means my den and Nyxara’s watch-line are already on borrowed time."

Zeus looked at the three Threshold women and felt the residual force under his sore ribs turn heavy with a different kind of responsibility. The continuity trial had measured violence and appetite. The erasure cult had just made loyalty lethal for anyone standing too close.

"Then we do not give them clean targets," Zeus said. "If they want the women who helped us, they get all of us in the same line."

Nyxara met his eyes, still fierce under the ash. "Careful. That starts sounding like a war-bond."

"Call it what you want," Zeus said. "I am not watching local allies get erased for the crime of keeping us alive."

Far across the terraces, another pale signal flared and died, as if a second cult element had just confirmed contact.
