I Am Zeus
Chapter 425: No Safe Ally
The second cult signal failed to become a second wave.
Nyxara’s watch-line charms began to fail one on her belt, and Vespera’s den-mark burned cold before cracking its face. Sable touched the gallery rights seal at her wrist, watching the script turn contested black.
"They hit our holdings without finishing the body fight. Coward efficient."
Vespera crushed the broken den-mark in her fist. "My people will scatter or die if I go back alone. The cult marked the den as helper ground."
Sable’s expression barely changed, and somehow that made it worse. "Gallery binders who shelter continuity seed lose rights fast. My span is no longer mine in clean law."
Hermes looked between them. "So helping us cost you home."
"Yes." Vespera frowned. "And leaving you now will not buy those homes back. It will only make the next erasure team’s work easier."
Poseidon planted the trident and exhaled. "So we all burn on the same floor."
Athena wasted no time with comfort. "Options. Fast."
Nyxara looked to Zeus when answering. "Threshold custom has one answer when holdings fall and a war-line stands. Temporary war-pact. Not House contract. Not soft alliance language. Bonded fight-claim until the threat that burned the dens is broken, or the pact is formally released."
Sun Wukong raised an eyebrow. "Bonded how?"
Vespera’s smile was all edge. "Open loyalty seals. In this place that includes intimate bond-marks when the parties have already crossed that line. It tells the local law and enemy law the same thing. These people are not temporary blades for hire. They are one war company."
Hades glanced once at Sable. She met the look without flinching.
"I will not abandon a death-touched man I pulled from a trap just because outsiders hate the choice," Sable said.
"Pact me or do not. I am already marked."
Athena’s eyes cut to Zeus. "Outside. Now."
They stepped away from the others along a broken rail above the terrace dead. Ash wind tugged at Athena’s hair. Residual force under Zeus’s skin still felt sore, too aware of every Threshold woman in range.
"This is becoming entanglement as strategy," Athena said. "Nyxara. Vespera. Now war-pacts and loyalty seals through flesh. Tell me how that does not become command weakness when one of them is threatened, and you stop thinking in lines."
Zeus kept his voice low. "They lost dens for fighting beside us. If we treat that as disposable local help, we are no better than the Continuum powers that called us inventory."
"That is honor language," Athena said. "I am asking about battlefield control. Intimate bonds create pressure points. They already understood that. They marked the women because the women are now levers."
"Then we stop leaving levers outside the line. We bring them in fully. War-pact means they are not side assets. They are company."
Athena stared at him hard enough to strip excuses. "And when the bond confuses your choices. When Nyxara’s body in danger pulls harder than route logic. When Vespera’s claim and Sable’s hold on Hades fracture group focus at the wrong gate?"
"Then you drag me back." Zeus’s voice was steady. "That is still your place in this line. I am not pretending this is clean. I am saying abandonment is uglier and less practical."
For a moment they did not speak. Below them the others waited among pale cult corpses and drifting ash.
Athena’s shoulders loosened by a fraction, not into softness but into honesty. "You assume I am only worried about your focus."
Zeus frowned. "Athena."
"I am not unaffected," she said, and the words landed with the force of something long held behind command. "I have watched Threshold women put hands on you, claim you, ground you, and bind battle to appetite while I kept the line standing. I told myself it was local custom and necessary method. That was partly true. It was not the whole truth."
Nyxara’s voice came from behind them, dry and knowing. "Finally."
Athena turned sharply. Nyxara had approached without apology, Vespera a step behind, Sable further back with Hades near enough to hear.
"You notice too much," Athena said.
"I notice when a spear-woman watches a carrier like she is still deciding whether to remain only the mind of the group," Nyxara said. "War-pact does not require you to pretend emptiness. It requires loyalty under fire. If your claim on him is command and buried want both, say it in action later. For now, decide if we bind."
Vespera tossed a small ring of Threshold seal-wire onto the rail between them. "Three local women with burned holdings. Nine outsiders with a continuity trial still open. One erasure cult pruning helpers. Temporary war-pact is the only structure that makes the next move coherent."
Sable added, quieter, "And the only structure that makes our survival more than delayed execution."
Zeus looked at his people. Poseidon gave a rough nod. Kratos did not bother with words. Sun Wukong shrugged like the chaos suited him. Loki’s eyes were bright with interest. Odin inclined his head once. Hermes already looked tired and accepting. Hades’s answer was in the way he had not stepped away from Sable since the crypt.
Athena picked up the seal-wire, held it, and closed her fist.
"Temporary war-pact," she said. "Until the cult threat and the current Threshold trial layer are resolved. No secret side bargains. No using intimate bonds to override formation in a live fight. Breach of that, and I cut the pact myself."
Nyxara’s smile showed teeth. "Acceptable."
They sealed it there on the rail in plain custom. Nyxara to Zeus. Vespera to Zeus. Sable to Hades, with the wider company line drawn through all of them by Athena’s formal acceptance. The marks were not pretty. They burned short and settled into skin and gear as living Threshold law.
No one celebrated.
Far across the ash terraces, another pale cult glint moved and vanished. Closer than before.
Athena watched it with hard eyes, then glanced once more at Zeus, the buried admission still open between them whether either wanted it named again.
There were no safe allies left in Ashen Threshold.
Only a war company with burned homes, unfinished desire, and enemies who now understood exactly who to kill to make the seed stand alone.
