Chapter 222: Chapter 222: A Piece of Good News

That evening, night fell.

Alex Grant downloaded the worksheets his teacher had sent, then sat down and began to write.

The tip of his pen moved across the paper with a steady SCRATCH, SCRATCH, SCRATCH.

Finally done with the task Mr. Shaw had assigned her, Evelyn Grant instinctively looked toward her brother.

He was deep in thought, completely oblivious to his surroundings.

The sight filled Evelyn Grant with a genuine sense of contentment.

’It made her feel... like she could forgive anything, as long as she still had her family.’

She was about to get out of her hospital bed to wash some fruit for her brother when her phone suddenly rang.

It was a call from her mother, Chloe Shea.

Alex Grant heard it too and looked over.

"Sis?"

"It’s Mom." Evelyn Grant quickly asked, "You didn’t tell her I’m in the hospital, did you?"

"I didn’t! So don’t tell her I’m with you."

Evelyn Grant nodded. Not wanting to disturb her brother’s studies, she took her phone and stepped out of the room.

"Mom."

The call connected, and Chloe Shea’s soft voice came from the other end.

"Eve! I have some good news for you."

"What good news?"

"You know how I’m home all day with nothing to do? Well, our next-door neighbor, Ms. Shaw, had a part-time offer as a tailor—and I can bring the fabric home to work on it!" Chloe Shea chuckled. "I didn’t dare tell you at first. I secretly paid the deposit myself and brought some materials home. After I turned in the finished pieces today, I actually earned a hundred yuan. It must be legitimate!"

Her voice was full of laughter, and her joy was palpable even over the phone.

But hearing this, Evelyn Grant frowned slightly. "Mom, your health isn’t good..."

"That’s all the more reason for me to stay active! It’ll keep my arms and legs from giving out on me too soon."

"..."

"I know you’re worried about my health, but rest assured! I’ll only work a little bit when I have nothing else to do. I won’t take on too much. That’s fine, isn’t it?"

Chloe Shea sounded like a child trying to bargain.

’But Evelyn Grant knew better. Once her mother started working, she’d get so focused on earning more money that she’d probably be too busy to even eat. Especially now that she was home alone, with no one there to watch over her.’

"Mom, if you’re short on money, I have some I can send you. It’s money the firm just gave me, and I don’t really need it."

"I don’t need money! What would an old woman like me even spend it on? The main thing is I want to stay active and earn a little on the side. Otherwise, I’m just sitting around doing nothing."

Since her mother had put it that way, Evelyn Grant knew she wouldn’t be able to stop her.

’But...’

’Sigh.’

"Alright, if you want to do it, then do it. But you absolutely must take care of your health! Think about it—if you make yourself sick just to earn a few hundred yuan, every trip to the hospital will cost way more than that! It’s just not worth it, is it?"

But Chloe Shea was in no mood to hear any of it at that moment.

"Mm-hm, I know, I know! I know what I’m doing."

"Okay."

"Oh, by the way, your brother has been staying at school this whole time and hasn’t come home. He’s called me a few times and said everything’s fine. Have you two been in touch?"

Evelyn Grant instinctively glanced toward the hospital room and smiled. "We have. You have no idea how much Alex worries about me! He’s already swamped with his own classes, but he still remembers to ask how I’m feeling."
