Chapter 191: Chapter 191: A Slip of the Tongue

"Over here." Su Wan waved to Zhang Yun.

Zhang Yun came in with Zhao Yuan. After an awkward greeting to Su Wan, she sat down meekly to the side.

"Have you eaten?"

"Not yet..." Zhang Yun said nervously.

Su Wan looked at Zhao Yuan. "Mr. Zhao, could you please go buy some dinner for Xiao Yun?"

Zhao Yuan didn’t move. Instead, he grabbed Zhang Yun’s hand and said, "Xiao Yun, don’t be afraid. I’m here."

Zhang Yun instinctively gripped Zhao Yuan’s hand tightly and smiled at him. "Ah Yuan, I’m fine. Sister-in-law would never bully me."

"Go buy me dinner. Just buy it from Uncle Su’s place to give them some business."

Only then did Zhao Yuan stand up. "Alright, Xiao Yun. I’ll go right now."

"Sister-in-law, it was my idea for Xiao Yun to move out. Don’t blame her. If you want to yell at someone, yell at me. Wait until I get back with dinner, then you can yell all you want."

Su Wan glanced up at him, not angry. "I know. Go on, hurry. Don’t let Xiao Yun go hungry."

Zhao Yuan couldn’t figure out what she was thinking, but he knew he couldn’t delay any longer. He had no choice but to turn around and get in line outside to buy noodles.

"Sister-in-law, please don’t be angry. I know you’re good to me, but I want to be independent. I can’t rely on you and Cousin forever. Please don’t be mad at me," Zhang Yun quickly apologized.

Su Wan said, "Xiao Yun, I know. If you want to be independent, of course I’ll support you."

"I didn’t come looking for you today to talk about you moving out."

"Really, Sister-in-law?" Zhang Yun looked up in pleasant surprise. She hadn’t expected Su Wan to be angry, and she couldn’t help but breathe a sigh of relief.

But before she could feel happy for long, an envelope appeared in front of her.

Zhang Yun was confused. "Sister-in-law, what’s this?"

"This is the money my third brother took from Zhao Xiangxiang. My third brother was being pursued by Zhao Xiangxiang..." Su Wan explained the entanglement between Zhao Xiangxiang and Su Jue.

Zhang Yun disapproved, thinking Zhao Xiangxiang sounded very unlikeable.

"My third brother went to study abroad in E Country, partly to avoid her pestering. Because my brother scammed a sum of money from Zhao Xiangxiang, the Zhao family is very unhappy with our Su family."

"The time Zhao Yuan met you was right around the time I had a falling out with Zhao Xiangxiang."

"Although I have no direct evidence that Zhao Yuan approached you to get revenge on me, I have to tell you these things. Otherwise, I’m afraid that if your marriage is unhappy in the future, you’ll blame me for ruining your life."

Zhang Yun was left dumbfounded.

"Sister-in-law, is what you’re saying true?"

"Yes. Take this money. It’s up to you whether you return it to Zhao Xiangxiang or keep it and put it away."

Zhang Yun’s mouth fell open. "Sister-in-law, I can’t be that unlucky, can I?"

"Think about it yourself. I’ve already done all I can."

Zhang Yun was a little flustered, but she also felt that Zhao Yuan probably wouldn’t deceive her.

"Sister-in-law, I don’t want this money." Zhang Yun pushed it back, looking at the envelope as if it were something terrifying.

"Why?" Su Wan frowned.

"This money isn’t mine, either."

"Sister-in-law, I’m scared. If I take it, I won’t know what to do with it. Besides... I’m afraid that as soon as I have the money, I won’t be able to keep it a secret. Ah Yuan will just have to ask me a couple of questions, and I’ll tell him everything."

"Then should I give it to him or not?"

No matter how she thought about it, Zhang Yun didn’t dare to take the money.

Su Wan was a bit speechless. She wanted to say Zhang Yun was spineless, but she felt it would be useless.

She rubbed her brow helplessly. "Fine. The money can stay with me for now. I’ll deposit it in the bank for you. When you want it, you can come and ask me for it."

"Okay, Sister-in-law. Thank you for your trouble." Upon hearing this, Zhang Yun let out a huge sigh of relief, feeling the anxiety in her heart dissipate.

Seeing Su Wan take the envelope back, she quickly declared, "Sister-in-law, don’t worry. If Zhao Yuan really is deceiving me to get revenge on you, I won’t blame you. After all, you told me everything. If I still choose to give it a try with him, then that’s my own problem."

Su Wan was speechless for a moment.

She didn’t know whether to call her clear-headed or just clueless.

"...As long as you’ve thought it through."

"Sister-in-law, is there any news about Cousin?" Zhang Yun asked hurriedly.

"No." Su Wan shook her head, not knowing if Lu Zhengchuan would come back tonight.

Zhang Yun felt even more apologetic. Her cousin was missing and the whole family was worried, yet she had been causing trouble for her sister-in-law. She’d even made her waste a whole evening looking for her.

A deep sense of guilt surfaced.

Without thinking, Zhang Yun blurted out, "Sister-in-law, I found a job."

"A job..." Su Wan, who was about to eat, paused and looked at her suspiciously.

The moment the words were out, Zhang Yun’s confidence wavered, and her voice stuttered, "It’s... as a female worker at the textile factory. At Zhao Yuan’s textile factory."

"...How did you find it? That’s quite impressive. Not bad." Su Wan naturally hoped that Zhang Yun would be successful.

After all, she felt sorry for relatives who were too poor. If they all became successful, then even if they didn’t help each other, at least they wouldn’t come to her for help.

Flattered by the praise, Zhang Yun said happily, "...Sister-in-law, it’s not really that I’m impressive. I just got lucky."

"Oh?" Su Wan lowered her head and took a bite of her noodles. They would get cold if she didn’t eat soon.

"Someone gave me the job opportunity," Zhang Yun chattered on.

"You didn’t get tricked, did you?" Su Wan’s brow furrowed instantly.

It wasn’t a question of doubt or mockery, but one of concern.

Zhang Yun really liked being around Su Wan, who she felt wasn’t manipulative.

She felt it was more relaxing to be with her than with anyone else.

"No, Sister-in-law. Actually, this matter is related to Cousin."

"It was Mr. Lu. He seems to be Cousin’s granduncle. He’s seriously ill. When I went to see him, he said he was grateful to our family for taking care of Cousin, so he gave me a thank-you gift, which was this job."

’Lu Zhengchuan’s granduncle?’

Su Wan’s suspicious gaze deepened. "Your cousin has no relatives in the country. All of the Lu Family’s relatives have gone abroad. There’s no one left here."

"What!"

Even though they had contacted Father Lu, Su Wan had never actually communicated with him directly.

Besides the fact that Father Lu’s status prevented her from contacting him privately, even letters had to be sent through official government channels.

As for the other elders in the Lu Family, Su Wan had also learned about them from Lu Zhengchuan.

It seemed impossible that a relative Lu Zhengchuan didn’t even know about would suddenly contact Zhang Yun to repay a favor.

"You were definitely tricked."

"But Sister-in-law, why would he trick me? He gave me a job, so I’m the one benefiting. My family is poor, what benefit could he get from me?"

"Your family may be poor, but your cousin is Lu Zhengchuan," Su Wan said gravely.

Her first reaction was that they were being plotted against.

"Who took you there? Did he just show up at your door? How did he get you the job?"

Zhang Yun hesitated.

Su Wan stared at her seriously. "Xiao Yun, this isn’t just about you finding a job. To be honest, back at the Southwest Military District Headquarters, when I taught you pottery, you were able to make money. Are you saying that now that we’re in the Capital, I can’t teach you a skill to help you find a job?"
