Chapter 639 370: Hitching a Ride

'There must be a way back, eventually!'

Zhao Rui's gaze was firm; he had been reborn once before.

Whether it was the present, past, or future, his mindset had long since surpassed that of an ordinary person.

Even though he was in an unknown world, he still had all his strength, so there was no need to worry.

After scanning his surroundings, Zhao Rui used a Body Technique and vanished into the thicket.

「Several hours later.」

A small, desolate, and remote village faintly appeared in his line of sight.

A strange vehicle appeared in the distance, swaying and wobbling.

Zhao Rui used his Six Yi Charm Immortal Technique to Support his Phantom Arts, concealing his figure as he quietly approached it.

When he got closer, he saw that the vehicle had a peculiar appearance.

It had wheels, but no oxen or horses, and no engine.

Atop the vehicle was a simple carriage made of assembled wooden planks. Three people were sitting inside.

The one facing forward, driving the vehicle, was a burly man in his twenties with a simple, honest face.

Behind him sat a woman with a little girl who looked to be seven or eight years old.

"You're going through a lot of trouble for us, Er Niu."

The woman said to the man, her face full of apology.

"Don't be so formal. We're from the same village; it's only right that we help each other out."

"I'm just afraid of getting you involved... the Immortal Dynasty..."

"Don't say things like that. Let's just pretend I don't know anything. I'm only a driver."

The man cut the woman off.

Silence instantly fell over the carriage.

The vehicle continued forward. It didn't look fast, but it was already moving as swiftly as a galloping horse—at least eighty kilometers per hour.

Just as the vehicle was speeding along, the man suddenly pressed a button, and it began to slow down.

"Er Niu, what's wrong?"

"Someone's blocking the road up ahead."

Er Niu scanned his surroundings warily. Seeing only the person on the road, he let out a sigh of relief. He opened the carriage window, looked at the newcomer, and asked, "What do you want?"

"Can I get a ride?"

"Sorry, friend, I'm full today. Another cart will be by in half an hour. Why don't you wait for that one?"

"Oh? You're not telling the truth, are you."

The man laughed heartily, then said in a clear voice, "I'm no ordinary person. You think that mother and child in there are taking up the whole carriage?"

At these words, Er Niu and the woman in the carriage were shocked.

Er Niu, in particular, yanked the vehicle's controls, swerving around the man and bolting into the distance.

"Ma'am, that man is trouble. I'm afraid we've been exposed."

"I may not be powerful, but I'll risk my life to get you two out of here."

Er Niu's face was a mask of anxiety, and beads of sweat slowly trickled down his forehead.

He was just an ordinary driver. He couldn't afford to provoke these important figures, let alone fight them.

At this thought, he couldn't help but yank hard on the power lever, urging the vehicle to fly even faster.

"E-Er Niu!"

The woman's terrified voice came from behind Er Niu.

"It's fine, don't be afraid."

Er Niu was panicking internally, but he forced himself to remain calm.

"Are you two eloping?"

A leisurely voice came from behind Er Niu. It was clearly a man's voice.

Er Niu was horrified. He quickly turned his head to see a man sitting directly across from the woman.

It was the same man who had asked for a ride earlier.

"M-My Lord! I... I was blind. I only lied because of the lady's presence."

Er Niu scrambled to kneel on the floor, kowtowing desperately.

"Oh, is that so? It's fine. Just keep driving. I'm only hitching a ride."

The man's tone was unhurried, as if he couldn't care less about any of this.

Hearing this, Er Niu only grew more uneasy.
