I Can Replicate Martial Arts
Chapter 640 371: A Lot of Nerve
Er Niu's heart skipped a beat at the sight. He couldn't figure out why this man was here at all!
'Could he be here for the mother and daughter?'
His heart tightened, but he knew that as long as the man didn't act, there was still a sliver of hope.
'Once we reach the border, I'll risk my own life to protect them while they escape.'
"Right away, sir!"
Er Niu turned back around. With a wary expression, he drove the vehicle, speeding off into the distance.
"Little girl, how old are you?"
On the carriage, the man spoke to the little girl with a smile.
"I'm five!"
The little girl hesitated for a moment before answering timidly.
"Are you here to capture me and my mother?"
The moment she said this, the young woman's face fell. She quickly pulled her daughter into her arms, her whole body trembling as she said, "She's just a child talking nonsense!"
"I'm not."
The man raised a hand to stop her, asking with a smile, "Are you being hunted?"
"No, no, we're just ordinary travelers."
The young woman denied it hastily.
The man smiled without a word and turned to look out the window.
"This quaint, old-fashioned scenery is rather interesting."
"A person's life is but a moment, like the grass in autumn. I suppose I've seen a thing or two."
The man smiled faintly.
The young woman clutched her child, barely daring to breathe. She saw that not only did the man make no move against them, but he was leisurely gazing at the passing scenery.
She was filled with both shock and suspicion!
The vehicle continued on. The atmosphere inside was extremely quiet, save for the little girl who couldn't help but fidget.
The young woman and Er Niu didn't dare move a muscle.
After traveling for about an hour, a massive fortress town appeared on the horizon.
The colossal city walls were dozens of meters high.
They were in no way shorter than the walls of the Song Realm within the Returning Ruins Secret Realm.
When Er Niu saw the towering walls, an almost imperceptible look of relief washed over his face.
'So close!'
"Your pursuers have arrived."
Just then, the man in the carriage suddenly spoke. His tone was as calm as ever, but his words made Er Niu's heart leap.
"S-Sir..."
Er Niu gripped the control lever tightly in his hands.
"Don't worry. They won't catch up for a little while. You should have enough time to reach the walls."
"S-Sir, you...!"
The man didn't answer, continuing to leisurely watch the scenery flash by the window.
"Brother Er Niu, this gentleman isn't a bad person. Just focus on driving."
Seeing this, the young woman knew this man probably wasn't one of their captors. Otherwise, judging by his incredibly keen hearing alone, she knew he was no ordinary person.
'If he wanted to capture us, he wouldn't have to go through all this trouble.'
"Alright, alright."
Er Niu knew he wasn't smart, certainly not as clever as the woman. Since she said so, she must have had her reasons.
He immediately focused on his driving, speeding toward the fortress.
A few more minutes passed.
Several beams of sword light suddenly shot through the sky, landing directly in front of the carriage.
Startled, Er Niu quickly tried to steer around them.
But before he could even turn the control lever, a longsword was already resting on his shoulder.
"You've got some nerve, daring to run off with the City Lord's woman!"
A man in green robes with his long hair tied in a topknot sat beside Er Niu, speaking with a smile that didn't reach his eyes.
"Sir, you must be joking. How would I dare!"
"You wouldn't dare?"
A sneer appeared on the man's lips as he violently struck the rear of the carriage with his palm.
With a loud BANG, the wooden compartment of the carriage exploded into pieces.
With the compartment obliterated, only the vehicle's chassis remained, still rocketing forward.
"Hm?"
The man in green whipped his head around, stunned. 'It's empty?'
