Backed into a corner, Wan Shanyan was seething. If Principal Chen found out she had deliberately given a new student a hard time today, her career at Imperial High School would be in jeopardy.

The main thing she hadn’t expected was that this member of the Shu Family, reclaimed from the Lower Star District, was completely different from what she had imagined.

’She’s a tough one!’

The class bell rang, and Wan Shanyan used it as a convenient excuse to dismiss the students who were causing a scene.

You Dan and the girl who had been at the dean’s office were walking together.

The girl kept looking back every few steps, her attention fixed on Shu Yao.

You Dan couldn’t help but ask, "Miao Miao, that girl, do you know her?"

An expression of self-doubt was etched on Wen Miaomiao’s face.

A few seconds later, her voice filled with conviction. "That’s her! I’m sure of it!"

Surprised and eager, she whipped her head around, but Shu Yao was gone. She frantically searched for her figure.

Feeling ignored, You Dan frowned in displeasure. "Wen Miaomiao, are you even listening to me?"

Wen Miaomiao gave him a light smack but didn’t look at him.

"Go back and get me excused from class!"

You Dan watched her run off, his eyes wide with disbelief.

’Is this really the obedient, well-behaved model student the teachers are always talking about?’

Wan Shanyan called Shu Yao back and finished processing her enrollment in less than ten minutes.

Shu Yao smiled. "Thank you, Director Wan."

’It was such a simple matter. There was no need to drag it out for so long and make everyone unhappy. What was the point?’

"Come with me!" Wan Shanyan said, her tone stiff.

She led Shu Yao to an office in the academic building and summoned several of the graduating classes’ homeroom teachers.

"This is Shu Yao, a new student who enrolled today. Which teacher is willing to take her?"

As soon as Wan Shanyan finished speaking, the homeroom teachers exchanged uncertain glances.

The Federation’s unified examination was less than two months away. Accepting a new student into their class at this point would inevitably impact their class’s average score and university admission rates.

One cautious teacher spoke up, "Director Wan, what are this student’s previous grades like?"

The corners of Director Wan’s mouth lifted in a barely perceptible smirk. "Shu Yao, why don’t you tell them yourself."

Then she put on a smug expression, clearly looking forward to Shu Yao’s humiliation.

Shu Yao glanced at her, then answered the teacher in a calm and steady voice, "For some personal reasons, I didn’t finish elementary school, and I never attended middle or high school."

"Have you self-studied the curriculum?"

"No."

’So she’s basically... illiterate!’

"Um..." The teacher who had just asked the question looked at Wan Shanyan, his face a mask of false apology. "Director Wan, I have a class to get to, so I’ll be leaving now."

Wan Shanyan said nothing.

Following that, two more homeroom teachers made excuses and slipped away.

Three remained, each harboring their own thoughts.

No one was willing to accept an illiterate student.

Wan Shanyan felt a flicker of triumph.

The fact that she couldn’t see a single trace of embarrassment on Shu Yao’s expression, however, left her feeling a little defeated.

"Your surname is Shu, right?" a male teacher with a baby face said, smiling warmly at Shu Yao. "Come to my class."

Shu Yao gave an indifferent nod. "Okay."

The other teachers stared at the baby-faced teacher in astonishment. So did Wan Shanyan.

"Teacher Wei, have you lost your mind?!" one of the other teachers couldn’t help but exclaim.

"Heh." Teacher Wei chuckled, and the smile made his baby face seem even younger. His eyes sized up Shu Yao, but his words were for his colleagues. "This student, Shu, must be the young lady the Shu Family recovered from the Lower Star District, right? The Federation owes her thirteen years of her life; they’ll probably give her the green light every step of the way. Plus, she has an uncle on staff at Imperial University. So I’m sure that, no matter what, Imperial University will save a spot for her."

This Teacher Wei was quite perceptive; he knew he’d stumbled upon a gem.

The expressions on the other teachers’ faces in the office shifted uncertainly. Even Wan Shanyan was momentarily at a loss for how to react to Teacher Wei’s revelation.

"Director Wan, how about letting the new student come to my class? The atmosphere in my class is a little better."

And just like that, they started fighting over her.

Teacher Wei wasn’t annoyed in the slightest; he just kept smiling warmly.

Shu Yao nodded to him. "Teacher Wei, I look forward to learning from you."

Teacher Wei nodded, satisfied. "First, let’s exchange contact info."
