I Married the President
Chapter 579: Game Within a Game
Chapter 579: Chapter 579: Game Within a Game
"What’s to like about a woman like that? I wouldn’t take her even if she threw herself at me for free. You have no idea... URP." Theo Rhodes let out a drunken hiccup and continued to complain. "When I first joined the paper, I tried to slip my mentor a red envelope, but she wouldn’t even take it. She almost reported the whole thing to management. Luckily, my dad is really close with the paper’s president, otherwise I would’ve been fired for sure."
As if hearing some incredible news, Joan Jacobs immediately pressed him, "You said your dad and your paper’s president are close? How close are we talking?"
"Let me put it this way." Theo Rhodes tried to prop himself up, and seeing this, Joan Jacobs quickly reached out to help him.
Once he sat up, Theo Rhodes seemed a bit more alert, but his eyes were still unfocused as he continued spilling his guts. "The Astoria Daily only hires one intern a year, but I’m the second one they brought on this year. You know why? Because my dad and the president are like brothers."
"Right now at the paper, aside from my mentor, even our editor-in-chief has to show me some respect. Otherwise, why do you think I’d call that self-righteous woman my mentor? I only call her that for Young Master Quincy’s sake."
Hearing this, Joan Jacobs probed cautiously, "I heard Miracle Health Clinic wants to work with you, but management still hasn’t given it the green light. What’s really going on with that?"
Theo Rhodes snorted, his face a mask of displeasure. "It’s all my mentor’s doing. She’s intentionally stalling. She’s in talks with another potential advertiser—the RT Supercar brand.
I heard from some colleagues that RT Supercar is willing to sponsor the Astoria Daily for 80 million. Your Miracle Health Clinic doesn’t have much of a reputation, so my mentor assumes you can’t possibly come up with that kind of money. That’s why she’s been stonewalling you. If the RT deal goes through, she’ll get at least a thirty percent commission. That’s a 24 million bonus! If you were in her shoes, wouldn’t you be tempted?"
million!!!
How could Joan Jacobs not be moved by that figure? She was green with envy. Gritting her teeth, she said, "So that’s what’s going on. I never took your mentor for that kind of person. I actually thought she was as righteous as everyone says online. Ha..."
With that last derisive laugh, any good impression she had of Claire Sinclair evaporated completely.
Theo Rhodes said, "Tell me about it. Before I started working there, I also thought my mentor was some paragon of justice. Now? I just wish I could tear that hypocritical mask off her face for everyone to see."
Joan Jacobs didn’t want to waste any more time on the woman. She quickly steered the conversation back. "So, are you saying the ad deal for Miracle Health Clinic is just dead in the water, then?"
Theo Rhodes’s lips curled into a roguish smile. "Are you dense? All we have to do is keep my mentor stuck in City E. Once someone else snatches up the RT deal, she’ll have no choice but to take Miracle Health Clinic’s offer!"
At his words, Joan Jacobs fell deep into thought.
A few seconds later, Joan Jacobs began to smile. "Assistant Rhodes, would you be interested in pocketing the commission from the Miracle Health Clinic deal?"
Theo Rhodes frowned slightly. "How would I do that? The people at Miracle Health Clinic only listen to my mentor. They won’t even give me the time of day."
Joan Jacobs said, "I think you’re very handsome. And you’re sharp, too. You seem to have a very promising future."
As she spoke, her gaze slowly swept over the young man’s face, making no effort to hide her interest despite the fact she already had a boyfriend.
Theo Rhodes’s eyes suddenly met hers. He gave her a mischievous smile. "Miss Jacobs, you’re gorgeous yourself. Just my type."
Joan Jacobs froze for a second, her gaze involuntarily captivated by the young man’s stunningly handsome face.
Theo Rhodes was only about twenty-one. He had clear skin and sharp, handsome features, easily rivaling any of the popular young heartthrobs in show business. He was definitely handsome enough to make it as an actor. On top of that, he’d been drinking, and in that moment, his slightly drunken gaze completely captivated her.
