I Married the President
Chapter 580: A Resentful Woman
Chapter 580: Chapter 580: A Resentful Woman
As if on some strange impulse, Joan Jacobs lowered her gaze and murmured, "What’s the use of being beautiful? All you men are fickle. No one wants to be serious with me."
A flicker of pity appeared in Theo Rhodes’s eyes. "That’s other men. I’m different."
"How are you any different? You seem just the same to me!" Joan Jacobs said with a coquettish pout.
Theo Rhodes sighed. "Never mind. Let’s not talk about such downers. Do you have any wine here? I feel like having a few more drinks. I’m in a foul mood."
"You’re going to drink more?" Joan Jacobs asked, surprised.
"Of course I’m drinking. Otherwise, I’ll have to deal with my master’s moods tomorrow, and seeing her just gets on my nerves."
"Then I’ll drink with you!" Joan Jacobs’s mission was accomplished, so she could finally relax. Besides, Theo Rhodes had just unintentionally dredged up some painful memories, and now she felt like drinking her sorrows away too.
A few moments later, Joan Jacobs had someone bring in several bottles of red wine.
Theo Rhodes felt a pang of disdain. ’I can’t handle much hard liquor, but red wine is just like grape juice to me.’
’Oh well. I’ll just treat it as juice, then.’
After a few glasses of red wine, Joan Jacobs was already starting to feel tipsy. But she got carried away, convinced that Theo Rhodes was even drunker than she was, and she insisted on pouring more wine for them both.
Theo Rhodes had only been pretending to be drunk, and the red wine actually seemed to clear his head a little. Seeing that Joan Jacobs was nearly gone, he began his counteroffensive.
"Joan, you’re really something else. Opening a factory this big at your age."
"Heh... not really. Xenogen Factory is just registered under my name. I’ve never been involved in running it."
Theo Rhodes’s expression grew serious. "That’s still impressive," he pressed. "So where do the medicines from your factory get sold?"
"Shh, that’s a secret." Joan Jacobs brought a finger to her lips, her gaze growing increasingly unfocused.
Fearing she was about to pass out, Theo Rhodes quickly snatched the glass from her hand. "Joan, I think you’re drunk. You should stop."
"No, I’m not drunk!" Joan Jacobs snatched the glass back. "I’m not! I can really hold my liquor."
Theo Rhodes watched her struggle to appear sober and laughed to himself. But his voice was laced with pity. "Hey, you’ve had it rough. Go on, drink up. I’ll keep you company tonight. You can tell me anything that’s on your mind."
Joan Jacobs gazed into his dark eyes through a drunken haze, her heart stirring with emotion. She couldn’t stop herself from speaking. "I fell in love with a man I shouldn’t have. He promised me a home, a family, but it’s been five years and he still hasn’t kept his word. He just gave me a house, a few cars, and this factory... He gave me the entire world, but that’s not what I want!"
"All I’ve ever wanted is a home... a family. I want to have our child. Why can’t he understand what’s in my heart..."
Joan Jacobs went on and on, complaining like a woman scorned.
Theo Rhodes was starting to get drowsy listening to her, but he forced himself not to interrupt.
Once she seemed to have vented enough, he finally spoke up. "Your man must be pretty incredible to give you so much. A lot of people can’t even afford one car. By the way, what does he do for a living?"
"Oh, him? You know him."
"I do?"
Joan Jacobs suddenly gazed at him with a sly smile. "Assistant Rhodes, if I were to be with you instead... would you have me?"
"Joan..." Theo Rhodes met her bewitching gaze without flinching. "I have three properties in Aethelgard and four sports cars. I also own my own clothing brand and make over a million a month. Compared to your boyfriend... who would you rather be with?"
