Ivy Tanner laughed. "I’m carrying his child. Is there anything he wouldn’t do?"

Granny wrote in surprise: You’re carrying Mr. Kingsley’s child?

Ivy Tanner started to joke, "That’s right. Too bad he doesn’t believe me. Why don’t you just poison me and kill the baby? It’s not like I ever wanted to give birth to it for him."

Granny immediately wrote: Don’t think like that. The child is innocent. If you give birth, maybe Mr. Kingsley will grow to love it.

Ivy Tanner smiled faintly. "He wants to be president; he can’t have an illegitimate child. If I live long enough to give birth, Granny, can you help me hide the baby?"
