I Reincarnated As The Villain Of The Interstellar Empire [BL]
Chapter 54: Perimeter Breach
Chapter 54: Chapter 54: Perimeter Breach
Ren’s lungs burned by the time he reached the residential wing, the facility’s red emergency lighting casting long, sharp shadows across corridors that had felt calm and unthreatening only hours earlier, and he slammed through the door to the boys’ quarters without slowing, heart hammering against his ribs with a fear more consuming than anything he’d felt since that first monster on the crashed transport weeks ago.
Milo was already awake, standing protectively in front of Finn’s bed, one hand gripping a small, improvised weapon that looked, on closer inspection, like a heavy data pad wielded with considerably more determination than practicality. Finn was awake too, sitting up in bed with wide, frightened eyes, but neither boy had panicked into total chaos, both of them clearly having absorbed enough of the facility’s emergency briefings over the last two days to understand exactly what an alarm like this actually meant.
"Elder brother," Milo said, relief flooding his young face the instant Ren appeared in the doorway, the improvised weapon lowering slightly though not disappearing entirely.
"I’m here," Ren said, crossing the room in three quick strides and pulling both boys into a fierce, protective embrace, his own pulse still hammering hard enough that he could feel it in his throat. "I’m here, you’re safe, I promise you’re safe."
"What’s happening," Finn asked, voice small and shaking despite his obvious effort to stay brave.
"Someone tried to get into the facility," Ren said, keeping his voice as steady and calm as he could manage despite the adrenaline still coursing through his system. "Security is handling it. We need to move to the safe room, right now, the way we practiced during the drill yesterday."
Milo nodded immediately, already grabbing Finn’s hand, the two of them falling into the same quick, efficient movement they’d rehearsed the previous afternoon during what Ren had assumed, at the time, was simply routine facility protocol rather than urgent, necessary preparation. They moved together down the corridor toward the reinforced safe room tucked deep within the residential wing’s core, and Ren kept both boys pressed close against him the entire way, senses straining for any sign of actual danger despite the facility’s continued, clinical announcements over the speaker system.
They reached the safe room just as Alouis arrived from the opposite direction, her expression tight with the same fierce, protective urgency Ren felt radiating through his own chest, and the four of them sealed themselves inside the reinforced chamber together, the heavy door locking into place with a solid, reassuring thunk.
"Report," Alouis said into her comm the moment they were secure, voice sharp with focused authority despite the visible fear still evident beneath it.
Static crackled for a moment before Yegard’s voice came through, tight and urgent. "Perimeter breach confirmed, three hostile contacts identified attempting infiltration through the eastern maintenance corridor. Security has engaged. Reven is coordinating additional response from command."
"Casualties," Alouis asked, something in her voice bracing for the worst.
"None on our side so far," Yegard said. "Two hostiles neutralized, one still active and attempting to breach deeper into the facility. I’m moving to intercept now."
Ren felt his stomach twist violently at that, fear for Yegard’s safety crashing into the fear he already carried for the children currently pressed against his sides. "Be careful," he said, leaning close to the comm despite not being the one Alouis had been addressing.
A brief pause, and then Yegard’s voice again, softer despite the obvious urgency still underlying it. "Always. Stay in the safe room until confirmed clear."
The comm cut, and Ren found himself sitting on the floor of the reinforced chamber, both boys curled against him, Alouis pacing anxiously near the sealed door, all three of them straining to hear any sound from beyond the thick, reinforced walls that might indicate how the unfolding crisis was actually resolving itself.
"Is Reven going to be okay," Finn asked quietly, voice muffled slightly against Ren’s shoulder. "And Yegard?"
"They’re both very capable," Ren said, hoping the reassurance in his voice sounded more convincing to the boy than it currently felt to himself. "They’ve handled dangerous situations before. This isn’t anything either of them can’t manage."
Milo said nothing, but Ren felt the boy’s grip tighten slightly around his other side, some of the earlier fear resurfacing despite his best efforts to maintain composure in front of his younger brother.
The minutes stretched agonizingly, each one feeling considerably longer than it should have, and Ren found himself running through every possible scenario, every way this could go wrong, fear for Yegard and Reven both tangling uncomfortably alongside his responsibility for the two frightened children currently depending on him for reassurance he wasn’t entirely certain he actually felt.
’This is exactly what I was afraid of,’ he thought, holding both boys close, listening to the muffled, indistinct sounds occasionally filtering through the reinforced walls, too distant and distorted to properly identify. ’This is exactly the danger I dragged them into, whether I meant to or not. If anything happens to either of them because of me—’
The comm crackled back to life before the spiraling thought could fully take hold, Reven’s voice this time, breathless but steady. "All clear. Third hostile neutralized, no further threats detected within the perimeter. You’re safe to exit the safe room whenever you’re ready."
The relief that flooded through Ren’s chest nearly buckled his knees even sitting down, and he felt Alouis’s shoulders sag visibly at the confirmation, her own tension finally easing into something more manageable.
"Thank god," she murmured, already moving toward the door’s release mechanism.
They emerged into corridors still lit with the emergency system’s red glow, though the atmosphere had shifted considerably from active crisis into something closer to careful, methodical cleanup, security personnel moving with brisk efficiency between various checkpoints, and Ren spotted Yegard first, standing near the corridor junction that led toward the eastern maintenance section, a fresh cut visible along his jaw, though otherwise apparently unharmed.
Ren crossed the distance between them without conscious thought, releasing Milo and Finn’s hands only long enough to pull Yegard into a fierce, relieved embrace, feeling the man’s arms wrap around him immediately in return, solid and warm despite the lingering adrenaline still evident in the tension of his shoulders.
"You’re hurt," Ren said, pulling back slightly to examine the cut more closely.
"It’s minor," Yegard said, something warm entering his voice despite the exhaustion evident beneath it. "I’ve had considerably worse. I’m more concerned with confirming all of you are unharmed."
"We’re fine," Ren said, though his voice wavered slightly with the residual fear of the last several minutes. "Scared, but fine. Milo got us to the safe room exactly like we practiced."
Yegard’s gaze shifted toward the boy, something genuinely proud entering his expression. "Well done," he said, and Milo, despite his obvious exhaustion, straightened slightly at the praise, some of his earlier fear easing into quiet pride.
Reven appeared a few minutes later, still in the process of coordinating with facility security over his own comm, expression tight with focused authority despite visible relief the moment his eyes found Ren and the children safely gathered in the corridor. He finished his conversation quickly, crossing to join them, and Ren felt him press close, one hand settling protectively at the small of Ren’s back, the gesture entirely unselfconscious given the circumstances.
"The three hostiles have been identified as Vorhesk operatives, exactly as anticipated," Reven said, something grim entering his tone. "This confirms our earlier assessment. They’re moving faster and more aggressively than intelligence suggested they would."
"What does that mean for us going forward," Alouis asked, already shifting into practical, strategic focus despite the evening’s exhaustion.
"It means this facility, secure as it is, may not remain a viable long-term solution," Reven said. "I need to consult with my father’s security council, properly, and determine whether a more permanent, heavily fortified location within the Capital itself might actually serve everyone’s safety better than continuing to move between temporary postings."
Ren felt a fresh wave of anxiety at the mention of the Capital, old fears about his father’s authority and expectations resurfacing despite the formal protection Reven had already extended. "The Capital," he repeated carefully.
"Not your father’s estate," Reven clarified quickly, seeming to understand the source of Ren’s hesitation immediately. "The Imperial Palace itself, under direct Crown protection, where your father’s authority holds no jurisdiction whatsoever. It would mean considerably tighter security, but also considerably more stability than continuing to relocate every time a new threat surfaces."
Ren considered that, weighing the implications carefully, glancing down at Milo and Finn, both boys clearly exhausted but attentive, absorbing every word of the conversation despite the late hour. "Would they be safe there too," Ren asked. "Properly safe, not just tolerated."
"They would have my personal protection, and my father’s, by extension," Reven said, something firm and certain in his voice. "I intend to make that formally, legally binding, not merely a verbal assurance that could shift depending on political convenience."
Ren nodded slowly, exhaustion and lingering fear both weighing heavy despite the reassurance. "Then I think we need to seriously consider it," he said. "Tonight was too close. I can’t keep risking their safety on facilities that turn out to be vulnerable the moment real danger actually arrives."
"I’ll begin arrangements immediately," Reven said, something relieved and determined settling into his expression.
Yegard’s hand found Ren’s shoulder, steady and grounding. "Whatever we decide, we decide together, and we make sure it’s actually right for all of you, not just expedient," he said, glancing meaningfully toward the two exhausted boys still standing close beside Ren.
Ren felt something warm settle into his chest despite the night’s terror, watching both men, so different in every visible way, unite so readily around the same singular priority of keeping his small, unconventional family safe. ’Whatever happens next,’ he thought, gathering Milo and Finn close again as the group began making their way back toward more secure quarters for what remained of the night, ’at least I’m not facing any of it without people who actually mean what they say about protecting what matters.’
