I Reincarnated As The Villain Of The Interstellar Empire [BL]
Chapter 55: The Palace
Chapter 55: Chapter 55: The Palace
The journey to the Imperial Capital took the better part of two days, considerably longer than Ren had expected given the urgency of their circumstances, though Reven explained the delay as a necessary precaution, careful coordination with palace security ensuring no vulnerable gaps existed in their travel route that another Vorhesk operative might exploit.
Ren spent much of the journey watching Milo and Finn adjust to the idea of their next destination, Finn predictably delighted by the prospect of an actual palace, peppering Reven with an endless stream of questions about towers and thrones and whether there would be a moat, while Milo approached the transition with his usual careful, measured consideration, clearly turning over the practical implications of what living somewhere this significant might actually mean for their day-to-day existence.
"Will people stare at us," Milo asked at one point, voice quiet enough that Ren suspected he’d been holding the question for a while before finally voicing it.
"Probably, at first," Ren admitted honestly, unwilling to offer false reassurance the boy would only see through eventually. "You’re going to be living somewhere significant, with someone significant, and people are naturally curious about things like that. But staring isn’t the same as danger, and I promise you, nobody in that palace is going to treat either of you as anything less than exactly what you are. Family. My family."
Milo considered that for a long moment, something settling in his expression that looked, to Ren’s careful observation, like cautious acceptance rather than lingering anxiety. "Okay," he said finally. "I can handle staring."
The palace itself, when it finally came into view through the transport’s viewport, took Ren’s breath away in a manner he hadn’t fully anticipated despite weeks of exposure to increasingly extravagant Imperial architecture. It rose from the Capital’s central district in soaring, elegant spires, pale stone catching the afternoon light in a way that made the entire structure seem to glow faintly from within, sprawling gardens visible even from this altitude, and surrounding the whole complex, a visible, formidable ring of defensive installations that spoke plainly to exactly how seriously palace security was taken.
"It’s beautiful," Finn breathed, pressing his face nearly against the viewport, and even Milo, Ren noticed, had abandoned his careful composure long enough to stare properly at the approaching structure.
They landed on a private platform tucked discreetly along the palace’s eastern wing, and Ren felt his own nerves resurface the moment the transport’s ramp began lowering, old anxieties about formal courts and rigid expectations crowding back in despite weeks of gradually building confidence.
Reven’s hand found his own the moment they stepped off the ramp, steady and reassuring. "You’ll be fine," he said quietly, apparently reading the tension plainly on Ren’s face despite his best efforts to disguise it. "I promise, whatever formal protocol exists here, none of it changes how genuinely welcome you and the children actually are."
They were met at the platform’s edge by a contingent of palace staff, formally dressed and precisely organized, and Ren felt Milo’s hand find his own on the opposite side, the boy’s grip tightening slightly as the reality of their new surroundings properly settled in.
"Your Highness," the lead attendant said, bowing formally toward Reven before turning her attention toward the rest of the group with practiced, professional warmth. "Welcome home. Accommodations have been prepared exactly as specified, including the requested arrangements for the young guests."
"Thank you, Maren," Reven said, something genuinely fond entering his voice at what was apparently a familiar, trusted member of his household staff. "Is my father currently available? I’d like to make introductions properly rather than leaving that particular meeting for later."
"His Majesty is currently finishing a council session but has requested to be informed the moment you arrive," Maren said. "I expect he’ll join you within the hour."
Ren felt his stomach twist at the mention of an imminent meeting with the Emperor himself, and Reven, apparently noticing the fresh wave of tension, squeezed his hand gently in reassurance. "He’s considerably less intimidating in person than his official portraits suggest," Reven said, something dry and faintly amused entering his voice. "Mostly."
"That’s not exactly reassuring," Ren said, something equally dry in his own response despite the underlying nerves.
They were led through the palace’s interior, and Ren found himself, despite his anxiety, genuinely awed by the sheer scale and beauty of the architecture, soaring ceilings adorned with intricate, shifting holographic murals depicting what he assumed were significant moments from Imperial history, elegant furnishings that managed to convey both luxury and genuine, lived-in comfort rather than sterile, untouchable grandeur.
The private wing Reven led them toward proved considerably warmer and more personal than the palace’s formal public spaces, a series of interconnected suites arranged around a central common area, floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking one of the palace’s many private gardens, and Ren felt some of his anxiety ease at the sight of it, the space clearly designed for actual living rather than mere formal display.
"This will be yours," Reven said, gesturing toward the largest of the suites, "and these two adjoining rooms for Milo and Finn, close enough that you’ll have easy access to them whenever needed, but with their own proper space as well."
Finn immediately dashed toward his designated room, delighted exclamations already drifting back through the open door, while Milo lingered a moment longer, studying the space with his usual careful consideration before offering Ren a small, genuine smile. "This is really nice," he admitted, something like cautious wonder finally breaking through his careful reserve.
"I’m glad," Ren said, warmth settling into his chest at the boy’s evident approval.
They’d barely finished settling in when a soft chime announced a new arrival, and Ren turned to find an older man entering the common area, tall and imposing despite visible age, the same sharp, pale eyes Ren had come to associate with Reven immediately identifying the resemblance even before the formal introduction began.
"Father," Reven said, something careful but genuine in his greeting, crossing to meet the Emperor properly.
"Reven," the Emperor said, something warm entering his own formal bearing as he embraced his son briefly, an unexpectedly casual gesture given the surrounding grandeur. He turned then toward Ren, studying him with careful, assessing attention that made Ren’s earlier nerves spike sharply despite his best efforts to maintain composure. "And this, I assume, is the young man who’s caused my son to finally abandon years of careful concealment."
"Rafayal Miller," Ren said, offering what he hoped was an appropriately respectful greeting despite his racing pulse. "Though most people currently call me Evan, or Ren, depending on the context."
"A man of many names," the Emperor observed, something faintly amused entering his expression despite its formal weight. "Reven has told me a great deal about you, though I suspect he’s left out considerably more than he’s shared, given how protective he’s been about the details."
"Father," Reven said, something warning entering his tone despite the obvious affection underlying it.
The Emperor’s attention shifted then, catching sight of Milo and Finn hovering near the doorway to their respective rooms, both boys watching the exchange with careful, wide-eyed attention. "And these must be the children I’ve heard about," he said, something genuinely gentle entering his voice as he addressed them directly. "Welcome to the palace. I hope you’ll both find it a considerably more peaceful home than wherever circumstances brought you from."
Finn, apparently deciding the Emperor’s gentle tone warranted immediate trust, stepped forward with characteristic boldness. "Are you really a king?" he asked, entirely unbothered by the formality of the moment.
A genuine laugh escaped the Emperor at that, warm and unguarded in a way that eased considerably more of Ren’s anxiety than any formal reassurance could have managed. "I am indeed," he said, crouching slightly to better meet the boy’s eye level. "Though I promise, being a king mostly involves considerably more paperwork than anyone imagines, and far fewer dragons than the stories suggest."
Finn’s face fell slightly with obvious disappointment at the absence of dragons, and the Emperor’s answering smile grew warmer still, something genuinely fond settling into his expression.
Ren watched the exchange with cautious, growing relief, the formal weight of the palace and its imposing Emperor easing, gradually, into something considerably more human and approachable than he’d initially braced himself for. ’Maybe this can actually work,’ he thought, watching Milo finally relax enough to step forward and join the conversation properly, the Emperor’s genuine warmth toward both boys settling something anxious and protective in Ren’s chest. ’Maybe this place really can be safe, for all of us, not just politically convenient.’
The Emperor rose eventually, addressing the group properly once more. "I understand there’s considerable business to discuss, security arrangements, formal protection documentation, and no doubt a great deal more given everything that’s transpired. But that can wait until tomorrow. Tonight, I’d simply like everyone to settle in properly and rest." He glanced toward Reven, something meaningful passing between father and son. "You’ve clearly had a difficult journey, in more ways than one. The palace is glad to finally have you home."
