I Reincarnated As The Villain Of The Interstellar Empire [BL]
Chapter 56: Formal Protection
Chapter 56: Chapter 56: Formal Protection
The formal protection ceremony, when it finally occurred two days later, proved considerably more involved than Ren had anticipated, an entire chamber full of Imperial officials and legal scribes gathered to witness what Reven had assured him was, despite its intimidating scale, primarily a procedural formality rather than anything requiring active participation on Ren’s part.
He stood at the center of the chamber regardless, feeling distinctly conspicuous despite Reven’s reassurances, while the Emperor himself presided over the proceedings, his voice carrying easily through the formal space as he read through the official declaration.
"By Imperial authority," the Emperor intoned, "and in recognition of the strategic and personal significance of the individual known as Rafayal Miller, also as Ren, the Crown hereby extends formal protection status, superseding all prior familial authority, including but not limited to the authority previously held by House Miller regarding matters of residence, marriage, and personal autonomy."
Ren felt something loosen in his chest at the specific, deliberate phrasing, the formal, legal weight of finally, properly escaping his father’s control settling into place with satisfying permanence.
"This protection extends," the Emperor continued, "to two minor dependents currently under the guardianship of the aforementioned individual, designated as Milo and Finn, granting them equal status and security under Crown protection for the duration of their minority, and beyond, should they choose to remain under such arrangement into adulthood."
Ren glanced toward the boys, seated in the front row of witnesses alongside Alouis and Yegard, and caught Milo’s expression, something fierce and relieved passing behind his careful composure, while Finn simply beamed, apparently delighted by the formal ceremony despite understanding only the broadest strokes of its actual significance.
The ceremony concluded a short while later, official seals applied to the necessary documentation, and Ren felt a genuine, overwhelming relief wash through him as the weight of his father’s authority finally, formally lifted from his shoulders entirely.
They’d barely returned to their private wing to properly celebrate when a palace attendant arrived with news that made Ren’s stomach drop entirely.
"Your father has arrived at the palace gates," the attendant informed Alouis carefully, "requesting immediate audience regarding the formal protection declaration."
Alouis’s expression tightened immediately, some old, familiar tension resurfacing despite the security of their current location. "He wasted no time," she said, something grim in her voice.
"Do you want me to handle this," Reven asked, already rising, something protective and determined settling into his posture.
"No," Ren said, surprising himself with the firmness of his own answer. "This is my father, my history. I should be the one to face him properly, now that I actually have the standing to do so without fear of being forced back under his control."
He found his father waiting in one of the palace’s formal receiving chambers, flanked by two of his brothers, Darian and Corvin, both looking considerably more exhausted and strained than Ren remembered from their last encounter at the outpost. His father’s expression, by contrast, remained as coldly composed as ever, though something in his posture suggested genuine, controlled fury simmering beneath the surface.
"Rafayal," his father said, the name landing with its usual weight of disappointment and expectation.
"It’s Ren, actually," Ren said, deciding immediately that this conversation would proceed on his terms, not his father’s. "Or Evan, depending on the context. I don’t particularly answer to Rafayal anymore, not from you."
Something flickered across his father’s expression at the deliberate defiance, cold fury sharpening further despite his continued composure. "I see the Crown’s protection has emboldened you considerably," he said, something cutting in his tone. "Formal documentation doesn’t erase the fact that you’re still my son, still part of this family, regardless of whatever legal maneuvering the Crown Prince has arranged on your behalf."
"The formal documentation means you no longer have any legal authority over my decisions," Ren said, keeping his voice steady despite old, deeply ingrained instincts urging him toward more deferential caution. "Which means this conversation isn’t actually about restoring your control. It’s about whatever you actually want to say to me now that control is no longer an option."
His father’s jaw tightened visibly, some genuine surprise flickering behind the controlled fury at Ren’s direct, unflinching challenge. "You’ve changed," he said finally, something almost grudging in the observation.
"I have," Ren agreed simply. "I stopped being afraid of you, mostly. That tends to change how a person approaches these conversations."
A long, heavy silence stretched between them, and Ren watched his father visibly recalibrate, whatever plan he’d arrived with clearly requiring significant adjustment given Ren’s unexpected, unwavering composure.
"Your brothers’ futures were threatened because of your disappearance," his father said finally, shifting tactics. "Darian’s position, Corvin’s engagement, Tobias’s commission. Does their suffering mean nothing to you, even now?"
Ren felt a flash of genuine guilt at that, glancing toward Darian and Corvin, both remaining carefully silent throughout the exchange. "It means something," he admitted honestly. "I never wanted any of you to suffer for my choices. But threatening your own children to force my compliance isn’t something I’m responsible for, Father. That was your decision, not mine."
"Rafayal—"
"Ren," he corrected again, firm and immediate. "And I’m not interested in continuing to shoulder guilt for choices you made, using my siblings as leverage against me. If you want an actual relationship with me going forward, it starts with acknowledging that particular truth honestly."
His father studied him for a long, considering moment, something shifting behind his controlled expression that Ren couldn’t quite identify. "You genuinely believe you can simply walk away from this family," he said finally, "from everything House Miller represents, and build something entirely separate under the Crown’s protection instead?"
"I already have," Ren said simply. "The only question now is whether you’re willing to actually engage with the person I’ve become, instead of continuing to demand the compliance of someone who doesn’t exist anymore."
Darian finally spoke, voice careful but genuine. "For what it’s worth, Rafayal—Ren," he corrected himself quickly, glancing briefly toward their father before continuing, "I’m glad you’re safe. Whatever else happens with all of this, I wanted you to know that."
Something warm cut through the tension at that, genuine gratitude toward his brother easing some of the old, defensive posture Ren had maintained throughout the conversation. "Thank you," he said quietly. "That means more than you probably realize."
His father’s expression remained largely unmoved, though something in his posture suggested the earlier fury had settled into something more calculating, more strategic. "This isn’t finished," he said finally, though the threat carried considerably less weight than it might have before Ren’s formal protection had been secured. "House Miller’s standing has been damaged by all of this. I intend to see it properly restored, regardless of your personal choices going forward."
"That’s your prerogative," Ren said, something almost weary entering his voice now that the confrontation’s peak tension had passed. "But it doesn’t require my compliance anymore, and I’d genuinely prefer if you stopped trying to secure it through threats against people I care about."
His father left shortly after, Darian and Corvin trailing behind him, though Darian paused at the doorway long enough to offer Ren one final, genuine look of relief and quiet support before following their father from the chamber.
Ren stood alone for a long moment once they’d gone, processing the weight of the confrontation, and felt Reven’s presence beside him before he’d even properly registered his approach, the man having apparently waited nearby throughout the entire exchange despite Ren’s earlier insistence on handling it alone.
"You did well," Reven said quietly, something proud and genuine in his voice.
"I’m exhausted," Ren admitted, some of his earlier composure finally cracking now that the confrontation itself had ended. "That was harder than I expected, even with formal protection actually backing me up."
"Confronting old patterns of control is always harder than the logic of the situation suggests it should be," Reven said, something understanding in his tone. "You handled it with considerably more grace than most people manage in similar circumstances."
Yegard appeared a moment later, having apparently waited nearby as well, and Ren found himself, despite the day’s earlier tension, settling into the comfortable, protective presence of both men with genuine, growing ease. "Milo and Finn are asking about you," Yegard said, something gentle in his voice. "They wanted to make sure you were alright after your father’s visit."
Ren felt his chest warm at that, the day’s stress easing into something more manageable at the reminder of the family waiting for him, genuine and unconditional in a way his father’s love had never quite managed to be. "Let’s go find them," he said, something settled and hopeful finally taking root despite everything the day had demanded of him. "I think we could all use a quiet evening together, after everything."
