I See Murders Before They Happen
Chapter 203 - 201: A Private Chat
Chapter 203: Chapter 201: A Private Chat
Su Miaoyi and Ge Yu sat down.
Cheng Jue sat next to them, and the Second Great-Aunt sat beside the man.
"Hello, my name is Kang Hong. I’m thirty-eight this year." As Kang Hong spoke, he suddenly lifted his left hand.
The four of them sitting opposite him were startled.
Cheng Jue, who was perched on the arm of the sofa, instinctively leaned back, thinking Kang Hong was about to throw a punch at him.
Then, the four of them stared at the watch on his wrist.
Cheng Jue tsked.
Cheng Yong and Ge Yu didn’t understand what was happening.
Su Miaoyi glanced at his watch. "That must be worth over three hundred thousand, right?"
Kang Hong nodded.
The Second Great-Aunt immediately broke into a smile. "My son makes a lot of money. A little bit of cash like this is nothing to him. We have several more at home."
Cheng Jue rolled his eyes.
Cheng Yong picked up his tea and took a sip. "Living so well for yourself while letting your parents eat scraps."
No one spoke. The Second Great-Aunt quickly said, "Oh, that was all in the past. Our lives are much better now."
Cheng Yong said no more.
"Son, tell them a bit more about yourself," the Second Great-Aunt said.
"I went to university in Jinghai. After graduating, I started a company with a classmate. We make a little money," Kang Hong said.
"Didn’t Second Great-Aunt say you worked for a big company and made over twenty thousand a month?" Su Miaoyi asked.
"You call twenty thousand money? Our company’s monthly revenue is this much." Kang Hong held up one finger.
"One yuan?" Cheng Jue heckled.
Su Miaoyi laughed and slapped his arm playfully.
Cheng Jue pressed his lips together and chuckled.
"I heard from Second Great-Aunt that you have a lot of admirers. How come you haven’t settled down yet?" Su Miaoyi asked, observing his expression, his eyes, his lips, his teeth.
"When too many people are after you, it gets annoying, so I just didn’t bother," Kang Hong said.
Su Miaoyi nodded.
"What about you? What are your terms?" Kang Hong asked.
"Me..." Su Miaoyi looked at him, thought for a moment, and said, "Why don’t we talk alone?"
"Yes, yes, of course," the Second Great-Aunt immediately agreed.
Cheng Yong and Ge Yu both looked at Su Miaoyi.
Su Miaoyi gave them a reassuring look.
The Second Great-Aunt stood up and pulled Ge Yu. "Let’s go, let’s go. The kids want to talk alone. We can go check out the balcony."
"Cheng Jue, you stay," Su Miaoyi said.
"I wasn’t planning on leaving," Cheng Jue said without moving.
The elders went to the balcony off the master bedroom. Su Miaoyi looked at Kang Hong. "My job is quite flexible. I don’t have to go to the office every day."
"What about your salary?" Kang Hong asked.
"It’s enough to get by," Su Miaoyi said.
Kang Hong nodded. "Freelancing is good. No need to go to work every day. After we have children, you can stay home and watch them."
"Who’s watching the kids?" Cheng Jue frowned.
Kang Hong chuckled. "The nanny, of course."
His words left a bad taste in their mouths.
Cheng Jue was about to say something else, but Su Miaoyi cut in, "That’s a beautiful watch. May I take a look?"
"Of course." Kang Hong extended his hand.
Su Miaoyi took his wrist and looked at the watch. After a moment, she pushed his shirt sleeve up a little.
Kang Hong was wearing a white casual shirt, so the sleeve rolled up easily.
Cheng Jue watched his sister’s actions.
Kang Hong immediately snatched his hand back and pulled his sleeve down. "What are you doing?"
"Sorry, my hand slipped," Su Miaoyi said, then picked up her phone and sent a message.
Then she resumed the small talk. "Do you have any requirements for your significant other?"
"I don’t have many requirements. It’s mainly about chemistry." Kang Hong looked at her. "But it would be even better if she could cook. It wasn’t easy for my parents to raise me, so I hope my future wife can be filial to them. If she can cook, my mother won’t have to work so hard to make my meals every day."
"So you’d make your wife work hard to cook for you?" Cheng Jue asked.
"Isn’t it only right to be filial to one’s parents?" Kang Hong found his question ridiculous.
"Then you cook for your parents. What, you can’t be filial to them without getting a wife?" Cheng Jue’s voice grew colder with each word. "Your parents worked hard to raise you, not your wife. Are you looking for a wife or a maid? Besides, aren’t you rich? Don’t you have all that monthly revenue? What, you can’t afford to hire a nanny for your parents?"
Kang Hong stared at him. "Shouldn’t a husband and wife support each other?"
"Sure. So your wife cooks for your parents at your home, and you come over to your mother-in-law’s house and cook for your in-laws. Perfectly fair," Cheng Jue said.
"Why should I have to come here and cook? She marries into my family, she becomes one of us. Cooking and serving my parents is what she’s supposed to do," Kang Hong said, raising his voice.
Cheng Jue let out a laugh and looked at Su Miaoyi. "Sis, did you hear that?"
Su Miaoyi nodded.
"In the future, you should just marry a man and have him move in. He’ll become part of our family, and he can cook, do laundry, and be filial to our parents," Cheng Jue said. "That way, you, me, and our parents can all take it easy."
Su Miaoyi smiled and nodded. "Okay. That’s a great idea."
"Are you kidding me? What kind of family do you think you are? Do you have any idea what kind of standing a family needs for a man to marry into it?" Kang Hong thought the two siblings were crazy.
Cheng Jue thought for a moment, then asked, "I have something I’d like to ask you. How much of a bride price are you planning to give for a wife?"
"Your family expects a bride price?" Kang Hong frowned.
"That’s right! Why is your family even asking for a bride price?" The Second Great-Aunt suddenly rushed out of the bedroom.
Su Miaoyi and Cheng Jue looked at her. "Oh, so your family doesn’t plan on giving a bride price."
"Then how much of a dowry is your family planning to give?" the Second Great-Aunt asked, looking at Ge Yu.
Cheng Yong said, "We’ve prepared one, of course. As for how much, why should we tell you?"
Cheng Jue said with a smile, "Sis, our family is generous. When you marry a man and bring him home, we’ll give a big one."
"A family like yours? A few hundred thousand at most. How much could you possibly give?" Kang Hong snorted. "Dream on if you think a few hundred thousand is enough to get a man to marry into your family."
"You think that’s too little? Then isn’t it shameful that your family doesn’t want to spend a single penny to get a wife?" Cheng Jue said.
"You!" Kang Hong suddenly shot to his feet.
Just then, there was a knock on the door.
KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK.
Everyone looked toward the door.
Cheng Jue got up to open it.
As soon as the door opened, he saw it was surrounded by police officers.
Cheng Jue froze for a second.
"Police." An officer showed his badge. "We received a report that someone is using drugs here."
Neighbors from all around were craning their necks to get a look.
Cheng Jue instinctively turned to look back at Su Miaoyi.
But just as he turned his head, Kang Hong suddenly lunged at Su Miaoyi.
"Miaomiao!" Ge Yu cried out in fear.
Cheng Yong and Cheng Jue immediately rushed forward, and the police officers at the door quickly entered the apartment.
But Su Miaoyi was faster. As Kang Hong lunged, she sidestepped and slammed him down onto the sofa.
Kang Hong struggled, but Su Miaoyi applied more pressure. She said to the police officer who had just reached her side, "I suspect he’s on drugs. He has needle marks on his arm, and he smells of them."
