Chapter 533: Chapter 351: The Funny and Awkward Act of Playing Dead
Wang Fugui watched as his guards fell to the ground, howling in agony.
Even his strongest guard, the Guard Captain with a cultivation at the Second Rank Initial Stage, had met the same fate. Wang Fugui’s face turned deathly pale. He stared in terror at the fearsome enemy who was now walking toward him with a smile.
"You, you stay away..."
"Young Master, run!" The fallen Guard Captain shouted at Wang Fugui, gritting his teeth against the intense pain wracking his body.
"Right... run. I have to get out of here." The realization finally dawned on Wang Fugui. He turned and ran toward his mount.
But just as he reached his mount, with one foot in the stirrup and about to swing himself onto the horse’s back, a playful laugh echoed in his ear.
"Don’t go! What’s the rush? Let’s keep playing..."
The moment the words fell, Wang Fugui felt an immense force yank him backward, and his whole body went flying.
THUD.
Lin Li had grabbed him by his clothes and flung him back. Wang Fugui crashed hard onto the ground, feeling dazed and seeing stars. For a moment, he couldn’t even get back up.
"You’re killing me! It hurts so much!" Having been thrown down twice in a row, Wang Fugui felt like his backside had been split open.
When he finally recovered, he saw Lin Li standing with his arms crossed, chuckling as he watched him. A jolt of fear shot through Wang Fugui’s heart, and cold sweat began to pour down his forehead.
He quickly shut his eyes and lay perfectly still on the ground, thinking, ’It’s over, it’s over. I’m going to die at this man’s hands. Father, Mother, your son has been unfilial. I won’t be able to care for you in your old age.’
If he could turn back time, if he had a second chance, Wang Fugui would never have provoked Lin Li.
’This guy’s really something else, choosing to play dead at a time like this...’ Lin Li thought, looking at the motionless Wang Fugui on the ground. He almost had to laugh at the man’s self-deceiving antics.
With that, he decided not to waste any more time on them and turned to walk toward a small mountain in the distance.
The information he had gathered in the city about the location of Bibo Lake mentioned one key landmark: after traveling several dozen kilometers out of the city, he would see a gourd-shaped mountain. Heading toward that mountain would lead him to Bibo Lake.
With the clearly identifiable gourd-shaped mountain marking the way, Lin Li no longer needed to follow anyone.
The sound of footsteps faded into the distance, but with his eyes shut tight, Wang Fugui had no idea that Lin Li was already gone.
At that moment, his mind was filled with thoughts of his parents back home, and he deeply regretted his reckless decision to leave the city.
The guards Lin Li had injured initially shared Wang Fugui’s fears, thinking Lin Li would finish them off.
To their great surprise, however, after knocking them all down, Lin Li didn’t take their lives, nor did he rob them of their few belongings. He didn’t even touch their mounts. He simply turned and left.
The injured guards stared, dumbfounded, at Lin Li’s retreating figure. For a moment, they were unsure of what to do and didn’t dare make a move.
Only when Lin Li’s figure had completely disappeared from sight did they finally confirm that the powerful young cultivator had indeed spared them.
"Young Master."
Once the danger had passed, the injured guards helped each other up and shuffled over to Wang Fugui, who was still lying on the ground with his eyes closed, playing dead.
"..."
Hearing his guards call out to him, the tightly-shut-eyed Wang Fugui still didn’t dare to open them.
Seeing him like this, the guards exchanged uncertain glances.
"Young Master, that man has left. We’re safe now..." the Guard Captain said.
"..." Wang Fugui hesitated but still didn’t dare open his eyes.
"Young Master, open your eyes and see for yourself. He’s really gone," said the slender guard who had been sent flying by Lin Li’s kick and suffered a broken rib.
Finally, after much persuasion from all his guards, the still-feigning-death Wang Fugui furtively cracked open his eyes and glanced around.
"That terrifying guy is really gone!" Wang Fugui said in astonishment when he saw only his four guards around him and no trace of Lin Li. He immediately scrambled to his feet.
He was in much better shape than his four guards. Aside from the terrible fright and a sore backside from the fall, he was otherwise uninjured.
"That guy is so strange. Why did he just leave like that?" Wang Fugui grumbled, dusting himself off.
He would probably never guess that the reason Lin Li had shown their group mercy and not dealt him a heavy blow...
...was entirely because of his earlier order: "Don’t take his life." That one sentence, which left some leeway, was what saved his group from any casualties.
The Guard Captain, a cultivator at the Second Rank Initial Stage, thought back to how he had confidently led his companions to surround Lin Li at the beginning. Then, a Spiritual Energy Wave of the Second Order Middle Stage had suddenly erupted from their opponent, and they were defeated with no way to fight back. He couldn’t help but sigh with emotion.
"I never would have thought that someone so young had already cultivated to the Second Order Middle Stage. Such talent for cultivation is truly rare!"
It was only natural for the Guard Captain to feel this way. After all, he was already forty-three years old and had only just managed to cultivate to the Second Rank Initial Stage.
