Chapter 737: Chapter 445: I Have Your Girlfriend, Believe It or Not
’That’s strange. Why is the woman behind me carrying a burlap sack?’
Chen Xiaoyan’s pace quickened. Just as she was about to approach her target and make her move, something unexpected happened right before her eyes, causing her to freeze in place.
"Ugh..."
Su Yue was walking steadily forward, about to leave the alley and hail a cab home, when her steps suddenly faltered and she came to a stop.
Then, she raised her right hand and pressed it to her chest, over her heart.
The discomfort she had felt this morning returned, and this time, it was far more intense.
THUD.
With her right hand pressed to her heart, waves of discomfort assaulted Su Yue’s senses. Before the faint Spiritual Light could even appear in the depths of her eyes, her body gave out.
She swayed a few times before collapsing to the ground, unconscious.
"This..." Chen Xiaoyan, who had been about to attack Su Yue, froze on the spot when she saw what happened.
’I haven’t even done anything! How did she just collapse on her own?’
’Oh well, whatever. Her passing out on her own is even better. Saves me the trouble of knocking her out myself.’
Chen Xiaoyan hurried forward. She first held a hand under Su Yue’s nose to check her breathing. After a quick check revealed Su Yue was only unconscious and not in any mortal danger, she stuffed her into the burlap sack she was carrying.
A few minutes later, Wang Hao, who was standing under a roadside tree keeping an eye on the surroundings, saw his partner return.
"All set?" Wang Hao asked as Chen Xiaoyan approached, his gaze falling on the burlap sack slung over her shoulder.
"Yep, all set. Let’s go," Chen Xiaoyan said. She then opened the rear door of the car and placed the burlap sack from her shoulder inside.
The two of them got in the car. Chen Xiaoyan took the driver’s seat, started the engine, and sped off toward the suburbs.
The roads were quite clear at night. Ten or twenty minutes later, they had left the bustling city center and entered the suburbs.
"You can send him the message now," said Chen Xiaoyan, who was driving, to Wang Hao in the passenger seat.
"Okay." Wang Hao nodded. He then took his phone out of his pocket, typed out a text message, and sent it.
...
Under the dim yellow streetlights, moths danced fearlessly around the lamps.
Every now and then, a moth would drop from the sky and fall to the ground.
The lucky ones landed on the sidewalk. The unlucky ones fell onto the busy road, only to be crushed by passing cars.
Lin Li returned from the wilderness, found a restaurant to eat dinner, and then drove home.
He was very satisfied with his hunt in the wilderness today. That, combined with a full stomach, put him in an excellent mood.
Although he was completely tone-deaf, he was alone in the car, so the high-spirited Lin Li started humming a song.
DING.
Lin Li, who was in the middle of humming, heard the text notification. He slowed the car, pulled his phone from his pocket, and glanced at the message he’d just received.
"I have your girlfriend. You have half an hour to get to 45 Limin Road in the East District suburbs. If you’re late, you’ll face the consequences."
Lin Li stared at the message, stunned for a second, then muttered to himself, ’I don’t even have a girlfriend... Is this person crazy? Who sent this to the wrong number?’
Ignoring the stranger who had obviously texted the wrong person, he shoved his phone back into his pocket.
Meanwhile, Wang Hao and Chen Xiaoyan, who were on their way to 45 Limin Road in the East District suburbs, waited a few minutes. When they didn’t get a reply from Lin Li, they grew puzzled.
"Hasn’t that guy, Lin Li, replied to our message yet?" Chen Xiaoyan asked the expressionless Wang Hao in the passenger seat, glancing at the burlap sack containing Su Yue in the rearview mirror.
"No," Wang Hao said with a nod, confused. "Strange. Logically, after getting our threatening text, he should have called us right away."
Chen Xiaoyan thought for a moment. "Maybe he just didn’t notice the text you sent..."
Wang Hao thought that was a possibility. Sometimes he missed messages people sent him, too.
"I’ll give him a call."
"Okay."
...
The silver-white van drove steadily onward. A little farther and it would reach Ping’an Garden District.
Lin Li had been busy in the wilderness all day and was covered in sweat. Seeing that he was almost home, he started thinking about how he would take a cold shower first and then eat the large half of a chilled watermelon in his fridge.
DRING DRING DRING...
His phone rang in his pocket. Lin Li took it out and saw it was an unknown number.
’Who’s this? Don’t tell me it’s a salesperson trying to sell me insurance...’
"Hello?" The moment Lin Li answered, a very hoarse voice came from the other end.
"I have your girlfriend. You have half an hour to get to 45 Limin Road in the East District suburbs. If you’re late, you’ll face the consequences..."
"..." Lin Li was silent for a few seconds before saying with utter exasperation, "You have the wrong number. Check who you’re calling before you dial again."
"Huh?" Wang Hao, who was calling Lin Li, was stunned by this response. "You..."
Before he could continue, Lin Li hung up on him.
"What happened?" Chen Xiaoyan asked, glancing at Wang Hao’s complicated expression.
"I called him, and the guy said I had the wrong number, then hung up on me," Wang Hao explained.
"The number shouldn’t be wrong..." Chen Xiaoyan said.
Wang Hao thought for a moment, then dialed Lin Li’s number again.
"I’m telling you, are you nuts? I already said you have the wrong number. Sending me a text wasn’t enough, now you keep calling me?"
As soon as the call connected, Wang Hao was hit with a tirade from Lin Li, which left him completely baffled.
This wasn’t his first time kidnapping someone, but it was the first time he’d ever encountered a situation like this.
Of course, he was an experienced professional, after all. This time, he didn’t wait for Lin Li to hang up. Instead, he said something that made Lin Li slam on the brakes.
"Your girlfriend, Su Yue, is in my hands."
Lin Li, who was driving the silver-white van and was just about to enter the Ping’an Garden District, heard the words coming from his phone. A jolt went through him, his pupils contracted sharply, and he slammed on the brakes.
SCREECH...
The van stopped at the main gate of the Ping’an Garden District. The security guard on night duty in the guardhouse watched Lin Li’s sudden stop with confusion, wondering why the resident wasn’t driving in.
"What did you say? Say it again," Lin Li said to the stranger on the phone, his face devoid of expression.
"I said, your girlfriend, Su Yue, is in my hands..." Hearing the change in Lin Li’s tone, Wang Hao knew he had regained the upper hand. He spoke calmly, without rushing.
"Are you kidding me? If you are, it’s not funny at all," Lin Li said with a frown. At this point, he still didn’t believe the other person and suspected it was a scam call.
"Kidding? I don’t have time to joke around with you. Do as I said at the beginning. You have half an hour to get to 45 Limin Road in the East District suburbs. If you’re late, I can’t guarantee your girlfriend won’t get hurt," Wang Hao said.
"You say you’ve kidnapped Su Yue. Let me hear her voice," Lin Li said.
"Heh heh, she’s unconscious right now, so she can’t talk. If you don’t believe me, you can choose not to come..." Wang Hao let out a sinister chuckle, then hung up without giving Lin Li another chance to speak.
"All set. Now we just have to wait for him to show up."
"Right." Chen Xiaoyan nodded. Just then, they arrived at their destination.
After being hung up on, Lin Li tried calling the number again, but each call was immediately disconnected.
Then, he called Su Yue. He tried several times, but no one answered.
"..." Lin Li didn’t try calling Su Yue again. He stared at his phone in silence. The fact that he couldn’t reach Su Yue was a tacit confirmation that what the stranger had said on the phone was true.
"FUCK..."
A furious curse rang out. With a ROAR, the stopped van started up again. The silver-white vehicle made a sharp U-turn and sped off toward 45 Limin Road in the East District suburbs.
