Chapter 619: Chapter 616: Boisterous

Mo Ling had always been confused.

He felt as if his memories were sealed away. Everything before his escape from the forest was a complete blank.

He always felt that he wasn’t really an ear fly, that this body felt somewhat strange. Yet, the instincts of an ear fly constantly drove him to help his companions, rushing tirelessly around the cave.

Mo Ling had also shared his confusion with the survivor. The survivor told him that perhaps he hadn’t been able to bear the sounds of war back in the forest, which had affected his memory.

Despite his confusion, Mo Ling never stayed idle.

He relentlessly practiced the language of the Feeding Birds of Prey, tested the sound propagation in various parts of the cave, and when he grew tired, he would go to the seashore to listen to the sound of the waves.

Waves crashed against the seaside rocks, carving long grooves into their surface. Within these grooves crawled all sorts of small, weak creatures, living safe and sound, carefree. Their simple minds were unaware of the impending disaster.

Mo Ling was very glad that although ear flies were physically weak, they possessed sufficient wisdom. At least their understanding of the world was clear:

Sound comes from vibration, and the world itself is vibration.

The Great Clan Leader of the Cave Clan told Mo Ling that the world possessed ’activity’.

And this ’activity’ manifested as all kinds of vibrations.

The sea’s activity manifested as the sound of waves, the air’s activity as the sound of wind, and the rain falling on the ground, making a SPLASHING sound, was the shared activity of the sky and the earth...

In the world as the ear flies understood it, the activity of living beings was the most powerful.

This was because, compared to simple natural phenomena, living beings could create a richer and more colorful variety of sounds. As living beings interacted with the natural world, wonderful sounds were constantly produced, thus stimulating the activity of all things.

Even a tiny insect touching a stone, a leaf, or a grain of sand would produce a different sound each time.

This was the special quality of living beings: they could perform different sounds, awakening the world’s latent activity.

No matter how weak a creature, in the perception of an ear fly, it was exceptionally special, because the sound it produced was special.

Though sounds varied in volume, could be orderly or chaotic, and differed in amplitude and frequency, each one was unique. After experiencing these unique sounds, the ear flies were filled with reverence for the world.

During this time, as Mo Ling earnestly listened to the sounds of the world around him, his inner confusion gradually began to dissipate.

Amidst the chaotic, disorderly sounds, living beings took on the role of bringing order to chaos, creating patterns amid the pandemonium and finding peace amid the turmoil.

And what the ear flies were doing was precisely this: guiding everything toward order.

Mo Ling wasn’t sure how to explain this feeling.

’A sense of responsibility? Or perhaps, a destiny?’

When one commits to a certain path, confusion is swept away, and the clamor of the surroundings quiets down...

The sound of the waves was no longer turbulent, the sound of dripping water no longer repetitive, the voice of the heart no longer noisy. They all faded into the background, becoming a part of the world...

Once his thoughts had gradually calmed, Mo Ling slowly drifted back to the cave from the coast.

"Where did you go? Come test the new sound points with me," the survivor said hurriedly.

Before Mo Ling could answer, it hastily led him deeper into the cave...

As they flew, Mo Ling asked, "Do you ever feel like the sounds around you are too noisy?"

This was one of the reasons Mo Ling often felt confused. The hearing of an ear fly was too acute; they received too much information, which could throw one’s thoughts into disarray, leading to wild imaginings and, consequently, confusion.

"Of course," the survivor replied earnestly.

"From the moment we’re born, even as newborns, we endure the noisiness of this world."

"Back then, even slightly loud sounds would harm our bodies, but didn’t we adapt?"

"At first, the wind seemed noisy, the rain seemed noisy, even the leaves seemed noisy..."

"Later, we slowly adapted and realized this is just how the world is. But then, new noises arrived..."

"Thunder, sandstorms, earthquakes... these sounds could easily destroy us, but we still slowly adapted. We converted what we sensed into our understanding of the world. The more we sensed, the broader the world became, and the more our wisdom grew."

"But then, new noises would arrive. The noise around us is endless. It seems we can never truly quiet our minds..."

At this, the survivor suddenly stopped flying and hovered in mid-air.

It seemed to be pondering something, or perhaps it was unsure of its own words, struggling to find the right phrasing.

The survivor remained there, lost in thought for a long while...

After a moment, the familiar buzzing sound resumed:

"When you’ve heard more, you will understand..."

"This world is, by its very nature, a noisy place."

...

A long time passed.

The world was still noisy, but Mo Ling was no longer so confused.

He followed the other ear flies, refining the battle plan step by step.

Finally, one day, the ear flies scouting outside brought back incredibly exciting news: the flock of Feeding Birds of Prey was heading toward the coast.

Moreover, based on the detected flock size, the birds had not yet fully recovered their numbers. Though there were still many, their population wasn’t as terrifying as when they had first entered the forest.

The Great Clan Leader immediately ordered all battle preparations to be completed and to await the arrival of the Feeding Birds of Prey.

A few days later, the familiar birdsong reached the beach.

The sound of countless flapping wings passed through the cave entrance, detected by the acute hearing of the ear flies.

Soon, the first Feeding Bird of Prey squeezed into the cave.

These vicious predators knew full well that there was plenty of food in the cave. At the junction where the seawater met the cave, there was all sorts of fresh flesh and blood for them to feast on.

Where there was one, there was a second. These greedy Feeding Birds of Prey would not let their companions monopolize the feast. They shoved against one another, surging into the cave. They didn’t care in the slightest, even when their brethren were crushed against the cave’s edge and sliced into chunks of flesh by the sharp rocks.

Devouring the bodies of their fallen, they madly poured into the even narrower crevices.

The blood drove them into a greater frenzy. The Feeding Birds of Prey beat their wings relentlessly, letting out ferocious screeches. Anything that blocked them from their meal would be ruthlessly torn to shreds.

A countless number of Feeding Birds of Prey forced their way into the narrow crevice. When they could no longer fly, they used their sharp claws to step on their comrades, digging into their bodies to push themselves deeper.

It was another scene of carnage. More and more Feeding Birds of Prey crammed into the narrow space, so many that even the hard rock walls were forced to crack under the pressure. Perhaps soon, the birds would break through the crevice and push even deeper.

Just then, a shrill, mournful chirp echoed throughout the cave.

The cry was extremely piercing, instantly blanketing all the Feeding Birds of Prey packed before the crevice.

Upon hearing this cry, the Feeding Birds of Prey immediately stopped pushing forward and instead began to attack their neighbors.

The slower Feeding Birds of Prey were instantly torn apart by those around them. In a flash, countless sharp beaks and claws flashed, and a chaotic melee erupted in an instant...
