Chapter 103 Humanity’s Natural Enemy
Chapter 103: Chapter 11: Humanity’s Natural Enemy
He wondered, "The Demon Extermination Association?"
Feng Yin noticed how respectful the Sheriff was toward Xie Jingyuan. He deduced that it was either due to Xie Jingyuan’s high reputation or the organization the Sheriff had just mentioned—the Demon Extermination Association.
Clearly, this organization was recognized by the Celestial Essence Official and likely held a rather high level of clearance.
As for its function, Feng Yin thought of his master’s immense strength and the very specific name of the organization, forming a vague guess.
He mused, "Demon Extermination..."
It was probably an organization dedicated to handling incidents that regular law enforcement couldn’t manage.
The more he saw and heard, the more Feng Yin felt how unique this world was.
He feared that everything he had learned so far was merely the tip of the iceberg.
Meanwhile, the Sheriff was already leading Xie Jingyuan and Feng Yin past the police tape while reporting the details of the case.
"Including the security guard and receptionist in the first-floor lobby, along with the residents and visitors on various floors, a total of twelve people died in this apartment building tonight," the Sheriff said. "There is no connection between the twelve victims. Some died in the hallway, while others were killed after their doors were smashed in. Initial assessments suggest that the perpetrator was killing at random."
Xie Jingyuan nodded slowly. "Are there security cameras?"
"Yes," the Sheriff quickly replied. "The investigation team is already retrieving and reviewing the footage."
The details of their conversation weren’t complicated.
After running around with Xie Jingyuan and the sheriffs for a while, Feng Yin soon found the Werewolf that had been dead for quite some time up on the Roof.
Unlike his old home on Earth, even though Celestial Essence Country was similar to Huaxia in terms of culture and customs, it was ultimately under a different system. The omnipresent Skynet surveillance system from his hometown didn’t seem to exist in Celestial Essence.
Security cameras were primarily installed by the property owners themselves.
While the internal public areas of this apartment building had cameras, the Roof just so happened to lack them.
It wasn’t that Feng Yin had luckily chosen the perfect battlefield. He had already scouted the apartment beforehand and specifically chosen the Roof after confirming it had no surveillance.
After all, aside from being a Transmigrator, he also had his special Golden Finger—the Armor.
Before he acquired enough strength to act without restraint, he naturally had to hide these unique traits as much as possible.
Sometimes he couldn’t help but think that it would be much more convenient if his Golden Finger were a stat panel or a proficiency system. Then he would only need to play the role of a genius. There would be no need to be as overly cautious as he was now.
He wanted to possess invincible talent and ultimate wisdom, supplemented by a few insignificant stat points to drastically boost his Cultivation. And then, he could obliterate all his enemies with a single punch.
Nearby, two professional criminal investigators were analyzing and reporting on the Werewolf’s condition.
"The fatal wound is primarily the pierced chest cavity and the shredded heart..."
"The Sharp Blade mark on the back of the head looks more like a simple finishing blow..."
"There are obvious signs of a struggle at the scene. Judging by the destructive power, the combat strength of this Werewolf and its opponent is estimated to be at least above the Fierce Level. The opponent is highly likely an Instant-level Combat Expert..."
Listening to them, Feng Yin couldn’t help but admire the reasoning skills of these criminal investigation Experts. Aside from failing to deduce his exact physical appearance, everything else was remarkably close to the truth.
Xie Jingyuan listened to the analysis and nodded slightly. "An unknown Instant-level powerhouse using a longsword three to four fingers wide... I understand. Then tell me about this Werewolf. What’s its situation?"
A Sheriff who appeared to be the team leader quickly replied, "The flesh and tissue samples have already been sent to the lab for testing." He hesitated for a moment before saying softly, "However, based on our experience, there is a higher probability that this is an Adjuster created by modulating and fusing beast genes with a human base, rather than one of ’those’ things."
The team leader added, "It looks like the technological signature used by corporations in the Angsa Alliance. Of course, this is a violation of international law..." Speaking of this, he couldn’t help but complain, "But then again, the adjustment experiments of those profit-driven corporations have never had a bottom line."
"If it’s not one of those things..." Xie Jingyuan mused, then nodded. "Then there is no need for our Demon Extermination Association to mobilize for now. Thank you for your hard work, everyone. Stay safe."
Several sheriffs quickly waved their hands and shook their heads, indicating it was no trouble at all.
Following that, Xie Jingyuan and Feng Yin bid them farewell and left the scene.
Deep into the night, Feng Yin carried his Armor and slung his Sword Box and simple luggage over his back, following Xie Jingyuan back to his villa.
"Feng Yin, there’s no need to be so restrained. You are already my true disciple; in a sense, our relationship is akin to father and son." Xie Jingyuan patted Feng Yin on the shoulder with a gentle smile. "It’s a bit dangerous in the middle of the night. Just stay at my place for now."
Feng Yin nodded in agreement. "Master, I’m sorry to disturb your rest..."
Xie Jingyuan waved his hand. "Feng Yin, you are being far too polite." Then, he pointed to the sofa. "Put your things down and have a seat. You look like you have a lot of questions."
Feng Yin looked a little embarrassed. "You noticed, Master..."
"Anyone would be full of questions after suddenly running into something like this, let alone a child suffering from amnesia like you. Ask whatever you want to ask." Xie Jingyuan spoke casually as he went to the fridge. He grabbed a canned beverage for Feng Yin, then opened an alcoholic drink for himself and sat down opposite him. "What do you want to know?"
Feng Yin thought for a moment. "That man with the black hair, the Demon Extermination Association, and the ’monsters’ you mentioned, Master..." He scratched his head. "Master, am I asking things I shouldn’t be asking?"
Xie Jingyuan smiled. "Feng Yin, I’ve said it before, you are my true disciple. There is no need to worry so much." He organized his words for a moment before saying, "Then let’s start with that man with the black hair. In truth, that guy was most likely an illegal Adjuster.
"Illegal Adjusters are artificial monsters created by modulating and combining the genes of other species with a human base. This allows a human to gain formidable physical attributes and the specific special abilities of the corresponding species without undergoing Cultivation."
Xie Jingyuan’s expression turned slightly cold. "However, such inferior products often suffer from genetic chaos, which leads to various congenital defects.
"The most obvious manifestations are a decline in cognitive ability, loss of emotional control, and the easy triggering of a cannibalistic instinct."
Feng Yin frowned. "Cannibalism?"
Xie Jingyuan nodded with a cold sneer. "Adjusters that display obvious traits of other species are basically unable to suppress the urge to eat humans. In their minds, human flesh is the ultimate delicacy.
"Currently, there is no reasonable explanation for this phenomenon anywhere in the world. It can only be considered a curse from the gods for humanity’s intrusion into the taboo Domain.
"Concentrating immense Martial power into uncontrollable, mentally deficient, violent, and cannibalistic creatures will only pose a threat to the world.
"Therefore, the international community classified Mixed Species Adjusters as forbidden technology. Of course, as you’ve seen with your own eyes today, many factions aren’t exactly law-abiding."
Xie Jingyuan looked serious. "Through mixed species adjustment technology, it’s easy to obtain combat units with Fierce-level Martial power. If the genetic fusion goes deep enough, they can even create individuals with physiques stronger than the Instant Level.
"Supported by powerful bodily functions, these individuals almost always awaken abilities similar to Pre-read Perception without needing Cultivation."
Feng Yin was somewhat surprised. "Doesn’t that mean they reach the Instant Level directly?"
Xie Jingyuan nodded, then shook his head. "Strictly speaking, it doesn’t count as the conventional Instant Level. They often have stronger physiques than human Instant Levels, but their See Through ability is more like a biological instinct. Moreover, due to their mental defects, it is very difficult for them to practice Extraordinary Martial Arts like Fixed Forms."
He scoffed. "To put it bluntly, they are just bestial humans with no hope of ever touching a higher realm in their lifetimes."
Feng Yin nodded silently. "But if they could be manufactured stably, that would still be incredible combat power, wouldn’t it..."
Xie Jingyuan acknowledged Feng Yin’s point but smiled and said, "The key lies in the word ’stably.’ If they want to create powerful Mixed Species Adjusters that rival the Instant Level, they first need Fierce-level humans as a base.
"Even with that foundation, the success rate of the experiments remains extremely low. Failures almost universally end up suffering bodily collapse and death.
"Although there are millions of Fierce-level Powerhouses, when scattered across the entire world, they are a precious human resource. Very few factions can afford such a steep consumption."
He frowned. "To date, I’ve only seen a handful of Mixed Species Adjusters with Instant-level capabilities. The most recent one was that experimental subject from Zero Point on Border Prison Island..."
Saying this, he fell into thought. "I wonder if this Werewolf from tonight has any connection to the Zero Point Consortium.
"Sigma Biotechnology is also highly suspicious... Although they are pioneering the field of using artificial wombs to create perfect Adjusters, it wasn’t uncommon to hear about them conducting mixed species experiments in the past..."
Feng Yin didn’t interrupt much, merely digesting his master’s words silently.
After letting his thoughts wander for a moment, Xie Jingyuan sat up straight again and looked at Feng Yin.
"Now that we’ve finished talking about Adjusters, let’s get back to the main topic. I’ll tell you about the Demon Extermination Association and the ’true monsters’ you’re curious about."
He thought, "Here it comes!"
Feng Yin’s spirits lifted, and he immediately sat up straight.
Xie Jingyuan’s expression was grave. "The Demon Extermination Association is a semi-official organization unique to Celestial Essence.
"Its core level was jointly established by the government and the Four Great Sects. Nearly a thousand Instant-level and almost twenty thousand Fierce Upper-level Martial Artists in Celestial Essence are registered with it.
"Its purpose is very simple—to combat the Natural Enemies lurking within human society."
He wondered, "Natural Enemies of humanity?"
Feng Yin’s expression shifted slightly.
Xie Jingyuan continued, "Unlike artificial species like Adjusters, since ancient times, although we humans have surpassed the other creatures on this planet and become its dominant force...
"What the vast majority of people don’t know is that in the long history of this planet, there have actually been many ’dark ages.’
"During those eras, the beings dominating this planet’s civilization were not humans, but a species that bore a highly similar appearance to humans yet had a completely different inner essence."
With utmost seriousness, Xie Jingyuan stated the answer directly.
"They are humanity’s Natural Enemy, the source of the uncanny valley effect, the unspeakable ones, the Shadows of history...
"In their normal state, they have an appearance and build identical to humans, but when they reveal their true forms, they are like demons and ghosts.
"They eat people, drink blood, view humans as livestock, and consider themselves a divine race.
"They are the madman species.
"Also known as the ’Mad Seeds’!"
