Chapter 28: Chapter 28: Checking Out Your Dorm

...

Meanwhile, the anxious girl had already parked her electric scooter in the designated non-motorized vehicle area, then took off her helmet and put it in the rear storage box.

She wiped the sweat from her forehead, simultaneously scheming how to trick her sister into leaving while hurrying toward the small plaza.

Before she had taken more than a few steps, she heard her sister’s voice call out from behind, "Yan Xici!"

The girl turned her head and looked toward the sound.

Today, her sister was dressed in a black suit. Her long, wavy hair was tied back neatly in a ponytail, and she walked with her head held high in seven-centimeter black high heels. At a glance, she was the very picture of a career woman.

Yan Xici’s heart tightened. Probably because of her guilty conscience, the girl’s smile was exceptionally sweet. "Sis, you got here fast."

Yan Li walked over. The sun shining in her face was a bit glaring, and she frowned in slight discomfort.

"I just saw a girl on an electric scooter who seemed to be dressed just like you."

If she didn’t know that her little sister couldn’t ride a scooter, she would have been certain that person was Yan Xici!

Hearing this, the girl’s heart skipped a beat. Her already frayed nerves tightened even further.

Her heart was pounding.

’Could my sister have realized that person was me?!’

"No way! You must have been mistaken!"

She was probably so nervous that her voice jumped an octave.

After speaking, she felt her reaction might have been a bit over the top. She lowered her head and mumbled, "Besides, I don’t know how to ride a scooter. You promised to teach me when I was fifteen, and now I’m twenty."

There was a hint of complaint in her words. Five years had passed; if Brother Xiao Ran hadn’t taught her, she feared she would have never learned in this lifetime.

Yan Li understood the implication and sighed.

"Haven’t I just been too busy? How about this: I’ll have the finance department transfer ten thousand yuan to you later. You can just sign up for a driving school. Wouldn’t that be more convenient?"

She really was busy, and besides, how could riding a scooter be as convenient as driving a car? It was better to just get it all done in one go. Worst case, she could just buy her sister a car later. It was only a matter of spending some money, and she was about to graduate soon anyway.

The girl pursed her pink lips and waved her hands quickly. "No, no, no, you should save your money."

She wasn’t an idiot; even if she learned to drive, she wouldn’t be able to afford a car anytime soon.

Besides, a car would cost over a thousand yuan a month just for gas. Even with an intern’s salary in the future, she wouldn’t be willing to burn all that money on fuel.

After getting a taste of how great electric scooters were, the girl had come to love them more and more. They were just more convenient!

They saved money and didn’t get stuck in traffic—what wasn’t to love?

Yan Li frowned. "What’s wrong with learning to drive? Do you have any idea how many part-time jobs I had to work back then just to save up for driving school?"

She felt her sister was a classic case of someone who didn’t appreciate what she had.

Not wanting to continue this topic, the girl affectionately linked her arm with her sister’s, her tone becoming impossibly soft.

"Alright, alright, I can’t win against you. Let’s go. We can go to the cafeteria. I haven’t eaten yet anyway."

Right now, she only had one thought: ’Get my sister to leave, and fast!’

However, Yan Li had no intention of eating.

It was already one o’clock; she had eaten long ago.

"Let’s go check on your dorm first. You can eat after I leave."

The girl’s heart leaped into her throat!

The tension on her face was indescribable.

’Why does she still want to see the dorm? I already told her I haven’t eaten! Does she have some kind of obsession with my dorm today?’

She swallowed nervously and said with a guilty conscience, "That’s... not a good idea, Sis..."

"What’s not good about it? Are you hiding something from me?"

Sensing something was wrong, Yan Li’s face filled with suspicion.

’Why is she being so secretive the moment I mention her dorm?’

’This girl has been acting strange ever since the phone call earlier. She isn’t... not living on campus, is she?’

The girl forced herself to stay calm. "Of course not, what could I possibly be hiding? I just moved in, so the dorm is a little messy, that’s all. Besides, I don’t know my roommates that well yet. If you come over now, they’ll think I can’t survive without my parents."

But Yan Li wasn’t someone who could be easily fooled. Especially with her sister’s reaction, she was determined to see her dorm today, no matter what.

She crossed her arms, her gaze darkening. "Nonsense. Let’s go, hurry up. I’ll feel better after a quick look, and I have things to do later."

Seeing her sister’s firm attitude, the girl pursed her lips and replied with a very reluctant "Oh."

’Now what am I going to do?’

Thinking fast, the girl had a flash of inspiration. ’Maybe I can take my sister to Yingying’s dorm...’

At this point, it was probably the only option left.

’If she finds out I’m still living with my brother-in-law, it’s not going to be a joke!!!’

But she would need a few minutes to coordinate things first.

With that thought, the girl pretended to be in pain, clutching her stomach with a delicate hand.

"Oh no, my stomach suddenly hurts a little. I must have eaten something bad this morning. Sis, wait for me a second, I’m just going to use the restroom, and then we can go!"

The girl didn’t give Yan Li any room to speak. As soon as she finished, she took off running toward the nearby administration building.

Watching her hurried retreat, Yan Li rolled her eyes in exasperation.

’What is she thinking? Can’t she just use the restroom in her dorm?’

’Honestly!’

Yan Xici dashed into the administration building in one breath. Hiding in the hallway, she gasped for air as she pulled her phone out of her small handbag and called her best friend, Si Yingying.

After all, they were best friends. She had been to Si Yingying’s dorm several times, and her roommates were all very nice people. This was truly her last resort!

And failure was not an option!

"Hey, Yingying! I’m bringing my sister to your dorm in a minute! Please help me out and give your roommates a heads-up. Just say I’ve been staying with you guys for two days. Don’t let her find out!!!" the girl said nervously, keeping an eye on the entrance.

At that moment, Si Yingying was leisurely eating in the cafeteria with her roommates. Completely clueless, she was utterly confused by the call and couldn’t help but frown. "Huh? What’s going on?"

Si Yingying really knew nothing about this at all.

"Ugh, my sister and brother-in-law got divorced a couple of days ago, and now my sister is insisting I move into the dorms. But I haven’t moved yet, and I’m afraid she’ll get angry, so I need you guys to help me lie to her."

She spoke very quickly because she was in a hurry.

Hearing this, Si Yingying was shocked.

"Wait, you’ve got some serious nerve. You actually dare to lie to your sister!"

As her best friend, Si Yingying had naturally heard all about the love-hate drama in her family, and she had certainly heard plenty about her formidable older sister.

Yan Xici was more afraid of her sister than anyone. To think she would dare to lie to her about something this huge.

It was truly quite surprising.

Just thinking about it made Si Yingying nervous. "Also, your sister and Teacher Xiao are divorced. Why haven’t you moved out?"

To be honest, she didn’t quite understand the girl’s reasoning either.

After all, men and women should keep their distance, and it really wasn’t appropriate for her to be living with a man.
