Chapter 62: Knotted by the rival Alpha -7

The rut lasted through the night and into the gray morning. Lucian knotted Kaelen four more times before the feral edge finally eased. The tent smelled of sex and blood and the heavy musk of an Alpha who had spent hours claiming what he had defended. Kaelen lay on the cot, body aching in every deep place, the renewed mark on his neck throbbing in time with his pulse. Come and slick painted his thighs. He could still feel the echo of every rough thrust.

Lucian sat on the edge of the cot, elbows on his knees, staring at the canvas wall. The blood on his hands had dried. The rage had burned down to something quieter and more dangerous.

"You almost put that vial in my drink," Lucian said without looking at him. "I need the full truth. Now."

Kaelen pushed himself upright despite the protest of sore muscles. "It was never poison."

Lucian’s head turned. Silver eyes locked on him. "Explain."

"My faction contacted me, yes. They wanted me to kill you. That part was real. But the vial they sent was not what they claimed." Kaelen met the stare without flinching. "I tested a drop on a scrap of cloth while you were inspecting the eastern wall. It reacted to a specific compound your own medical staff uses in the field. An antidote. Not a toxin."

Lucian’s voice stayed flat. "An antidote for what?"

"A slow-acting paralytic your generals have been adding to your evening tea for the past two weeks. Small doses. Enough to dull reaction time and cloud judgment without obvious symptoms. They planned to finish you during the next major engagement and blame the Eastern forces. My old handlers wanted me to pour the real poison and take credit. I switched the vials when the medical shipment arrived. What you saw me holding was the cure."

Silence stretched. Rain tapped the canvas in a steady rhythm. Lucian’s hands curled into fists on his knees.

"You let me believe you were trying to kill me."

"You walked in before I could explain. You were already furious. The bond was already feeding on that fury." Kaelen’s mouth twisted. "I made a choice in the moment. I kept the antidote instead of the poison. That is the only truth that matters."

Lucian stood and paced the small space once. When he turned back the ice in his expression had cracked. Something raw showed underneath.

"You took a dart for me at the gala. You ran and still let me catch you. You watched me tear through a squad of rogues and still opened for my knot. And the entire time you were carrying the thing that would have saved my life."

"Yes."

Lucian crossed to the cot and dropped to one knee in front of him. His hands settled on Kaelen’s bare thighs, thumbs stroking slow arcs over the sticky skin. "I accused you. I fucked you in anger. I bit you again while I thought you had betrayed me."

"I noticed."

"I am sorry."

The words landed heavier than any command. Kaelen’s breath caught. The temporary bond pulsed soft and open between them.

Lucian’s hands slid higher. "Let me make it right."

Kaelen’s cock stirred under the attention. Slick gathered again despite the lingering soreness. "You do not have to—"

"I want to." Lucian leaned in and kissed him, slower than any kiss they had shared before. No teeth. No demand. Just heat and the quiet press of mouths. Kaelen opened for it with a soft sound. Lucian’s tongue slid against his, tasting, learning.

When they broke apart Lucian guided him to lie back. He stripped the last of his own clothes and settled between Kaelen’s thighs. This time the first thrust was careful, almost gentle. Kaelen’s head tipped back at the familiar stretch. Lucian moved with deliberate care, hips rolling deep and steady, every stroke angled to drag over the place that made Kaelen’s breath stutter.

"Look at me," Lucian said quietly.

Kaelen’s eyes met his. The bond hummed, stripped of anger for the first time. Lucian’s hand wrapped around Kaelen’s cock and stroked in the same unhurried rhythm.

"You could have poured the real poison," Lucian murmured. "You could have let my generals finish what they started. Instead you carried the antidote and still let me believe the worst."

"I did not want you dead."

"I know that now." Lucian’s pace stayed measured, but the depth increased. "Your body has been telling me the truth for days. I was too busy being your enemy to listen."

Kaelen’s hands slid up Lucian’s arms and settled on his shoulders. "Harder."

Lucian gave him harder without losing the care. The cot creaked. Slick sounds filled the tent. Pleasure built slow and thick between them. Lucian’s free hand found the mark on Kaelen’s neck and stroked over it with surprising tenderness.

"Come with me," Lucian said. Not a command. A request.

Kaelen’s orgasm rolled through him in a long wave. He spilled over Lucian’s fist with a broken moan, body clenching around the cock still moving inside him. Lucian followed moments later, knot swelling and locking them together with a final deep push. Hot pulses of come flooded Kaelen’s insides while the Alpha’s forehead dropped to his shoulder.

They stayed tied, breathing in the same rhythm. Lucian’s mouth brushed the renewed mark.

"My own generals," Lucian said against his skin. "They tried to weaken me. They put you in the position of choosing between your people and my life. That ends now."

Kaelen’s fingers carded through Lucian’s hair. "What will you do?"

"I will destroy them." Lucian lifted his head. The silver eyes were clear and absolute. "Every officer who signed off on that plot. Every hand that measured the doses. I will burn their careers and their names until nothing remains. No one threatens what is mine and walks away intact."

The vow settled between them heavier than any political decree. Kaelen felt it through the bond like a second pulse.

Lucian’s hand stroked once over Kaelen’s stomach, feeling the slight swell where he was knotted and full. "The rut is finished. The anger is finished. What remains is this. You and me and the fact that I will not let either side take you from me."

Kaelen’s laugh was soft and tired. "You sound almost possessive."

"I am." Lucian kissed him again, slow and certain. "Get used to it."

Outside the outpost continued its recovery. Inside the tent the air smelled of sex and the quiet shift of something that had finally stopped being only enemies. The knot held them together while the rain eased, and Kaelen, still full of the man who had just promised war for his sake, let himself believe the walls between them had truly begun to fall.
