Landlord in the Arctic
Chapter 731 - 462: Placing an Order
Chapter 731: Chapter 462: Placing an Order
Now, only Feng Mountain and Tessa were left in the office.
The air seemed to have solidified, so quiet it felt like it could freeze over.
Feng Mountain looked at his private advisor with an innocent expression, trying to ease the tension with a somewhat placating smile.
"Hey, come on. Don’t get so worked up."
"Boss, do you have any idea what you’re doing?" Tessa said, suppressing a torrent of frustration. She jabbed a finger at the price quote and continued bluntly, "If we go with the purchase volume you just mentioned, this batch of live vegetable and fruit plants alone will cost at least 1 million US Dollars."
"On top of that, they’ve made it clear they can’t guarantee a survival rate. You know as well as I do that the environment in Giant Vegetable Valley is completely different from the Crown Territory. If we buy this many live plants at once and they can’t adapt to the harsh Tundra climate, this entire investment will be a total loss."
Tessa paused and straightened her posture, making her uncompromising stance clear.
"Boss, your accounts can’t take a hit from this kind of unplanned investment. As your private financial advisor, from a professional standpoint, I object to this."
"If you insist on going through with this, then I’m sorry, but I’ll have no choice but to resign. I can’t stand by and watch you make a decision that will result in such a massive loss."
Hearing Tessa’s firm tone, Feng Mountain was about to explain—to make her understand this wasn’t some blind impulse, that he had his reasons.
Just then, there was a sharp KNOCK KNOCK on the office door.
A moment later, Jenny pushed the door open and walked in, carrying a basket with a wide smile on her face.
But the moment she stepped inside, she could tell something was wrong with the atmosphere.
Tessa was normally a bit cold and detached.
But right now, her expression was so cold it could freeze the air, and that iciness was mixed with obvious anger.
"Darling, the coffee’s here. This one’s for you, with milk and cocoa. And Tessa, this one’s for you."
Jenny quickly opened the basket.
She took out a cup of coffee and handed it to Feng Mountain, then smoothly offered another to Tessa.
While trying to ease the tension, she casually asked,
"I saw Gordon standing outside the door. What’s going on?"
Tessa didn’t answer.
Her gaze remained fixed on Feng Mountain, sharp as a frozen icicle.
Nothing could break her concentration.
Her only thought now was to make the boss understand her position.
And the grave consequences this investment could have.
"Er, we’re having a bit of a communication problem." Feng Mountain picked up his coffee awkwardly, took off the lid, and took a sip. The steam wafting onto his face helped ease some of the tension.
Then he explained, "Tessa and I have a disagreement about the plantation. She thinks the procurement plan is unreasonable and is threatening to resign."
"There’s nothing that can’t be solved by sitting down and talking!"
Jenny listened and then offered a gentle smile, as warm and comforting as the spring sun.
She then walked over to Tessa, took her hand, and patted it gently before leading her to sit down on a long bench.
"Don’t sit there, there’s a..."
Feng Mountain saw where Jenny was about to sit and started to warn her, but before he could finish his sentence, she had already sat down gracefully.
However, the moment she sat down, Jenny immediately realized something was amiss.
Frowning slightly, she stood back up and lifted the animal hide cushion covering the bench.
Underneath, on the log base of the bench, was the protruding, jagged end of a broken branch.
It was uneven and looked very crude.
Clearly, it hadn’t been properly cleaned up in the rush to finish it.
"Who made this chair?" Jenny asked, a hint of exasperated complaint in her voice.
"I don’t know. I’ll ask Yves later. My desk still has bark on it," Feng Mountain said with a troubled shrug, a helpless look on his face.
Jenny moved to a different spot and gently took Tessa’s hand again, her tone soft and earnest.
"Tessa, let’s not get ahead of ourselves. We can listen to Feng’s explanation. You have to remember, this camp started as nothing but a desolate Glacial River Beach. Feng built it into what it is today, bit by bit. You should trust him."
Of course, Tessa trusted Feng Mountain from the bottom of her heart.
She herself had been rescued from a life of wandering and brought to the Crown Territory.
Those days of wandering had been a nightmare—exposed to the elements, with no place to call home, struggling to survive each and every day.
It was Feng Mountain who had given her hope, who had given her a stable home.
But trust was one thing; this investment was something else entirely.
If a mistake in this investment decision triggered a chain reaction that led to her boss’s bankruptcy, the consequences would be unimaginable.
And then, a pitiful person like her, who had just rediscovered a hope for life...
...would probably have to go back to huddling under a bone-chillingly cold bridge, rummaging through trash cans every day just to get by.
She might even run into those drug-addled, incoherent bastards again, get dragged into a dark alley, and fall back into despair.
At the thought of this, a flicker of fear, like a passing shadow, clouded Tessa’s eyes.
But just as quickly, she firmed her resolve, bit her lip, and looked up at Jenny.
"Of course I trust the boss, but there’s a real problem with this investment. Those live plants from Giant Vegetable Valley will turn into ordinary vegetables once they leave. Buying so many at once requires cash, and the boss’s funds are already tight. Plus, there’s a boat payment of tens of millions of US Dollars due this year."
"Is that right?" Jenny asked, turning to look at Feng Mountain. Her brow furrowed, her eyes filled with worry. "Maybe... we should reconsider?" she said hesitantly.
