Chapter 71: The Contaminated Survivor

The cleanup battery found Lily Morgan because her left arm disappeared. Not completely. Her hand became red squares from the wrist down, broke apart, then snapped back into flesh while she stood among the seventeen people outside the damaged shield. Lily stared at her fingers.

Lily's first concern was not the missing hand. It was whether the boy beside her had seen it. She tucked the arm against her coat and asked him to look toward the stairwell while Emma came over. The ordinary instinct made the System panel feel even more obscene. Contaminated. Witness. Deletion candidate. None of those words knew she had just tried to keep a child from being frightened.

Lily noticed Jace watching and lifted her wrapped arm. "Still mine," she said. Jace nodded. The System had not earned an opinion on that yet.

The two women looked at one another across Lily's body. Neither was wrong. Emma had a patient actively disappearing. Grace looked at her.

Seraphina stopped. Then corrected herself.
