Damien woke up at 6 a.m. on Thursday.

No alarm. His body just knew. Like the system had set an internal clock that wouldn’t let him oversleep on the most important day of his life.

He lay in bed for five minutes. Staring at the cracked ceiling. Listening to the drip. Plip. Plop. Plip. Same apartment. Same sounds. Same life. But today was different.

Today he was having lunch with the Ashfords.

He showered. Used the Grooming Kit. Shaved with the system razor that never nicked. Applied the skincare products that made his face glow. Brushed his teeth twice. Checked his reflection.

The person in the mirror looked ready. Jawline sharp. Eyes clear. Skin fresh. The Body Enhancement Pill had done its job. He looked like someone who belonged at a table with billionaires.

At 9 a.m., a plain brown box appeared at his door. The Business Formal Outfit Tier 2. Inside was a charcoal gray suit that fit his body like it had been sewn onto him. A crisp white shirt. A thin black tie. Leather shoes so polished he could see his reflection in them.

He put it on and looked in the mirror again.

The person staring back didn’t live in South Central. Didn’t eat rice for dinner. Didn’t mop floors for fourteen dollars an hour. The person in the mirror looked like money.

[Outfit bonus: Charm +2 while worn. Effective Charm: 12.]

Charm 12. Above average. For the first time in his life, he was above average at something that mattered.

He checked his inventory for the luncheon.

[Mind Shield: Available. Duration: 4 hours.]

[Dominance Aura: Available. Duration: 30 minutes. Cooldown: 12 hours.]

[Confidence Aura: Available. Duration: 1 hour. Cooldown: 6 hours.]

[Voice Modulator: Passive.]

[Pheromone Release: Passive.]

[Desire Reading Level 2: Passive.]

[Arousal Spike: Available. Cooldown: 1 hour.]

He activated Mind Shield immediately. The effect was subtle. A clarity in his thoughts. A firmness in his mental walls. Like someone had reinforced the doors of his mind with steel.

[Mind Shield: Active. Duration: 4 hours. Host is protected from psychological manipulation, interrogation techniques, and emotional probing.]

Good. Eleanor Ashford was going to try to read him. The Mind Shield would make that difficult. Not impossible. But difficult.

He saved the Dominance Aura and Confidence Aura for the lunch itself. No point wasting them on the drive over.

At 11:30 a.m., he ordered an Uber. $28 from South Central to Beverly Hills. He paid with his real bank account. $36 minus $28 left $8. He was almost broke in real money again.

[Spending detected: $28. Not quest-related. No rebate applicable.]

The Uber driver was a talkative guy named Miguel who wanted to discuss the Lakers and traffic and the price of gas. Damien nodded and made small talk while the city transformed outside the window.

South Central gave way to Mid-Wilshire. Mid-Wilshire gave way to West Hollywood. West Hollywood gave way to Beverly Hills. The buildings got shorter. The lawns got greener. The cars got more expensive. The divide was physical. Visible. You could feel the money thickening in the air.

The Ashford Estate sat at the end of a private cul-de-sac off Sunset Boulevard. Iron gates. Hedgerows twelve feet tall. A guardhouse at the entrance. Security cameras on every post.

[Security assessment: 14 cameras. 2 armed guards. 1 vehicle checkpoint. Estate perimeter: 4 acres.]

Four acres. In Beverly Hills. Where land cost more per square foot than Damien’s entire building.

The Uber stopped at the gate. A guard in a black uniform approached the window.

"Name?" the guard said.

"Damien Black."

The guard checked a tablet. Nodded. The gate opened slowly. Smooth. Silent. The kind of gate that cost more than most houses.

The driveway was long. Lined with olive trees. Perfectly maintained. The house appeared at the end like a mirage. White. Three stories. Columns. A fountain in the circular drive. The kind of house that appeared in magazines and movies and the dreams of people who would never live there.

[System perception: Host’s heart rate elevated. Adrenaline: Moderate. Mind Shield: Stable.]

His heart was racing. The Mind Shield kept his thoughts clear but his body was reacting. This was the most powerful family in Los Angeles. And he was walking into their home wearing a suit the system bought him.

The front door was opened by a woman in a black dress. Mid-forties. Professional. Expressionless. A staff member. Not Eleanor.

"Mr. Black. Welcome to the Ashford Estate. Mrs. Ashford is expecting you in the garden. Please follow me."

She led him through the house. The interior was exactly what he expected and worse. Marble floors. Original art on the walls. Furniture that looked like it belonged in a museum. A chandelier in the foyer that probably cost more than his college tuition.

But the thing that hit him hardest was the silence. The house was enormous and completely silent. No music. No television. No voices. Just the click of his shoes on marble and the faint hum of air conditioning.

They passed a staircase. Three floors. At the top, a closed door. Richard Ashford’s office. The one Mia had mentioned. The one nobody was allowed to enter.

[System scan: Third floor. Locked. Occupancy: Unknown. Audio detection: Negative. Thermal signature: Inconclusive.]

Unknown. Richard might be home. Might not. The system couldn’t tell. That was unsettling.

They walked through a set of French doors onto a garden terrace. And there she was.

Eleanor Ashford.

She sat at a round table draped in white linen. China plates. Crystal glasses. Silverware that gleamed in the afternoon sun. A spread of food that could feed twenty people but was set for three.

[Eleanor Ashford. Age 45. Former supermodel. Current philanthropist.]

[Arousal: Unknown. Scanning...]

[Arousal: 3%. Trust: 0%. Curiosity: 62%. Suspicion: 28%.]

Three percent arousal. Sixty-two percent curiosity. She was studying him. The way a scientist studies a specimen under a microscope. Clinical. Precise. Fascinated.

She was stunning. Victoria had been right about that. Forty-five but she looked thirty-five. Blonde hair swept up in an elegant twist. Blue eyes. The same blue as Victoria’s but warmer. Softer. A face that had graced magazine covers in her twenties and had aged into something more dangerous. A face that said "I know everything about you before you speak."

She wore a pale blue dress. Simple. Elegant. Pearls at her neck. No wedding ring visible. Her figure was full. Curved. The kind of body that didn’t belong to a woman who’d had three children. She’d maintained it. Or the system had already shown him that she maintained it. Zero sexual activity in twelve months. A body like that. Wasted.

[Eleanor Ashford. Attraction profile: Power. Confidence. Wit. Men who don’t flinch.]

Men who don’t flinch. That was the key.

"Mr. Black." Eleanor stood. She was tall. Nearly 5’10" in her heels. She extended her hand. Her grip was firm. Warm. Controlled. "Thank you for coming."

"Thank you for inviting me." His voice was steady. The Voice Modulator doing its work. "Your home is beautiful."

"Homes are just boxes with expensive paint." She smiled. It was perfect. Practiced. The kind of smile that had been refined over decades of public appearances. "Please. Sit."

He sat. She sat. The third chair was empty.

"Victoria is running late," Eleanor said. "She does that when she’s nervous. Don’t tell her I told you."

"She gets nervous?"

"She gets nervous about things that matter to her. She’d never admit it." Eleanor poured him tea from a porcelain pot. The gesture was graceful. Practiced. "Tell me Mr. Black. How long have you worked at The Vault?"

"Eight months."

"And before that?"

"I was a student. I still am."

"LA Crest University. Literature major." She said it like she was reading from a file. Because she probably was. "Scholarship student. 3.7 GPA. No family. No money. No connections." She sipped her tea. "And yet here you are. At my table. In a suit that costs more than your monthly rent."

[Mind Shield: Active. Eleanor Ashford is probing for reactions. Maintain composure.]

"The suit was a gift," he said.

"From whom?"

"From myself. I saved up."

"By working as a barback." She tilted her head. One millimeter. The same gesture Victoria did. Like mother like daughter. "Mr. Black. I’ve had my research team look into your background. Thoroughly. Your bank account has $8 in it. Your rent is $1,200 a month. You eat rice for dinner. You don’t own a car. And yet you’re wearing a $2,000 suit."

[System alert: Eleanor Ashford has conducted financial surveillance on Host.]

Eight dollars. She knew he had eight dollars in his real account. The Ashford family had pulled his bank records. That was invasive. Illegal. And completely expected.

"The suit was on clearance," Damien said.

Eleanor laughed. Soft. Musical. Genuine. The first real expression she’d shown.

"Clearance. In Beverly Hills." She set her tea down. "I like you Mr. Black."

"Damien."

"Damien." She repeated his name like she was tasting it. "You’re funny. That’s rare. Most people who sit at this table are too terrified to be funny."

"I’m terrified. I’m just also funny."

"Those two things often go together." She leaned forward slightly. "Do you know why I invited you here?"

"Because I’m trending on social media and your daughter follows me on Instagram."

"That’s part of it." She paused. "But not all of it." She picked up a small bell from the table. Rang it once. The sound was delicate. Like a bird.

A staff member appeared. "Mrs. Ashford?"

"Please bring Victoria down. And tell her that hiding in her room won’t change the fact that our guest has already arrived."

The staff member disappeared. Eleanor turned back to Damien.

"My daughter has been acting strangely this week," Eleanor said. "She never comes to The Vault alone. She never warns people about me. And she never follows anyone on Instagram." Her blue eyes locked onto his. "She did all three this week. Because of you."

"I didn’t ask her to do any of those things."

"No. You didn’t. Which is precisely why I’m curious." She picked up her tea again. "Victoria doesn’t make moves. She watches. Waits. Analyzes. But with you she’s been... reactive. And reactive Victoria is something I’ve never seen before."

[Eleanor Ashford. Curiosity: 62% → 68%. Suspicion: 28% → 24%.]

Curiosity climbing. Suspicion dropping. She was warming to him. Not romantically. Not yet. But intellectually. He was a puzzle she wanted to solve.

"I think Victoria is just observant," Damien said. "She noticed I changed. Other people noticed too. She just paid more attention because she’s smarter than most."

"Smarter than most." Eleanor’s lip curved. "You admire her."

"I respect her."

"Respect and admiration are different things Damien. Respect is what you give a boss. Admiration is what you give a woman."

[Mind Shield: Active. Eleanor Ashford is testing Host’s reaction to Victoria as a topic.]

She was testing him. Seeing if he’d flinch at the word "woman." Seeing if he’d reveal attraction to Victoria. The Mind Shield kept his face neutral. His pulse steady.

"I admire her intelligence," he said. "And her honesty. She warned me about today. That takes courage."

"She warned you about me." Eleanor’s expression didn’t change but something shifted behind her eyes. "My daughter warned you about her own mother."

"She said you’d test me. She was right."

"And she wasn’t afraid that I’d succeed? That I’d find your weaknesses and use them?"

"She said you’d try. She didn’t say you’d succeed."

[Eleanor Ashford. Curiosity: 68% → 74%. Trust: 0% → 4%.]

Four percent trust. From zero. The first crack in the ice. Because he’d been honest about Victoria. He hadn’t pretended. Hadn’t hidden the fact that her daughter had warned him. And Eleanor respected that.

"You’re very calm for a man sitting across from a woman who knows his bank balance," Eleanor said.

"Panic is bad for digestion."

She laughed again. Louder this time. Realer. The practiced smile cracked and something genuine peeked through.

Then footsteps on the terrace. Heels on stone. The metronome click he’d recognize anywhere.

Victoria appeared through the French doors. White dress. Hair down. Blue eyes cold. She stopped when she saw Damien. Their eyes met. A flicker of something passed between them. Recognition. Warning. Trust.

Then Victoria looked at her mother. And her expression went flat.

"Mother. You started without me."

"I started with tea. The food hasn’t arrived." Eleanor gestured to the empty chair. "Sit Victoria. And try to look like you’re enjoying yourself."

Victoria sat. The third chair. Between her mother and Damien. She crossed her legs. Picked up her napkin. Placed it on her lap. Every movement precise. Controlled.

[Victoria Ashford. Arousal: 6%. Trust: 26%. Curiosity: 81%. Suspicion: 35%.]

[Eleanor Ashford. Arousal: 3%. Trust: 4%. Curiosity: 74%. Suspicion: 24%.]

Two women. Same blood. Same blue eyes. Same capacity for destruction. And Damien sat between them.

The food arrived. Course after course. Salad. Soup. Fish. Wine for Eleanor. Water for Victoria. The most uncomfortable lunch in Beverly Hills history.

"So Damien," Eleanor said between bites. "Tell me about the fight at The Vault."

"Self-defense. Four men with weapons. I was unarmed."

"And you won."

"Barely."

"Barely is still winning." She set her fork down. "My husband would have hired security. My daughter would have called the police. You fought them yourself. Why?"

"Because there wasn’t time for anything else."

"There’s always time Damien. The question is whether you use it or waste it." She picked up her wine glass. "You used it. That tells me something about you."

"What does it tell you?"

"That you’re either very brave or very stupid. And I haven’t decided which."

Victoria’s lip twitched. Almost a smile. She caught herself and looked away.

[Victoria Ashford. Trust: 26% → 28%. Amusement: Detected.]

The lunch continued. Eleanor asked questions. Damien answered. The Mind Shield kept his responses measured. The Voice Modulator kept his tone even. And beneath the table, the system tracked every micro-expression, every shift in arousal, every point of trust gained or lost.

Then Eleanor asked the question he’d been dreading.

"My husband wants to meet you."
