Lust Rebate System: From Nerd to LA God
Chapter 28: The Husband
The words landed on the table like a grenade with the pin pulled.
Damien’s fork stopped halfway to his mouth. The fish sat on the tines, cooling. His heart rate spiked. The Mind Shield absorbed the panic and compressed it into a dull pressure behind his eyes.
[Threat alert: Richard Ashford. Probability of encounter today: 67% → 89%.]
Eighty-nine percent. The number blinked in his vision like a warning sign.
Eleanor watched him. Her blue eyes tracking every micro-expression. Every twitch. Every breath. She was reading him the way a poker player reads a tell. Looking for the crack.
Victoria’s hand tightened on her napkin. Her knuckles went white. She didn’t look at Damien. She looked at her mother. And something passed between them. A silent conversation in a language only mothers and daughters spoke.
"Richard wants to meet me," Damien repeated. His voice was steady. The Voice Modulator carrying the words without a tremor. "Why?"
"Because you’re the topic of every conversation in this house this week." Eleanor sipped her wine. "My husband doesn’t like topics. He likes solutions. And right now you’re an unsolved problem."
"I’m not a problem. I’m a student."
"You’re a student who fought four men on camera, seduced his coworker, and caught my daughter’s attention." She set the glass down. "In Richard’s world, that makes you a variable. And variables get eliminated."
[Eleanor Ashford. Curiosity: 74%. Trust: 4%. Threat assessment: Moderate.]
She wasn’t threatening him. She was warning him. The same way Victoria had warned him. Except Eleanor’s warning came with a smile and a wine glass and the kind of elegance that made threats sound like compliments.
"Mother." Victoria’s voice was sharp. Cold. The ice queen mask fully in place. "You’re scaring him."
"I’m not scaring him." Eleanor tilted her head. "Are you scared Damien?"
"No."
"Liar." She smiled. "But a good liar. That’s acceptable. Bad liars are boring."
[Eleanor Ashford. Trust: 4% → 7%. Appreciation: Detected.]
She appreciated being lied to. As long as the lie was good. Eleanor Ashford lived in a world of bad liars. People who stammered and sweated and looked away. Damien looked her in the eye and lied. And she respected that.
The staff cleared the plates. A new course arrived. Some kind of dessert. Chocolate. Artfully arranged. Damien didn’t touch it. His stomach was a knot.
"When does your husband want to meet me?" Damien asked.
"Tonight." Eleanor picked up her dessert spoon. "He’s in his office. Third floor. He’s been there since this morning. He watches the cameras. He’s been watching us since you arrived."
[System alert: Host has been under video surveillance since entering the estate.]
[Cameras: 14. All feeding to third floor office.]
[Richard Ashford has been observing Host’s interactions with Eleanor and Victoria in real time.]
He’d been watched. The entire lunch. Every word. Every gesture. Every expression. Richard Ashford had been sitting three floors above them, studying him on a screen like a lab rat in a maze.
The Mind Shield had protected his thoughts. But it couldn’t erase the physical tells. The slight tension in his shoulders. The way his jaw tightened. The micro-pauses before his answers. Richard had seen all of it.
"He’s been watching," Damien said. Not a question.
"Richard watches everything. It’s how he built his empire." Eleanor touched her napkin to her lips. "He’s particularly interested in how you behave around my daughter."
Victoria’s head snapped toward her mother. "What does that mean?"
"It means Richard has eyes everywhere Victoria. You know that." Eleanor’s voice was calm. Maternal. And absolutely terrifying. "He saw you at The Vault. Sitting alone. Talking to a barback. He saw you follow Damien on Instagram. He saw you meet him on campus yesterday."
[Victoria Ashford. Fear: 34%. Anger: 28%. Trust in mother: Complicated.]
Victoria’s face was a mask. But her tag was screaming. Fear and anger in equal measure. She hadn’t known her father was watching. The realization hit her like a physical blow.
"You’re telling me this now?" Victoria said. "At lunch? In front of him?"
"I’m telling you because you need to understand the game you’re playing." Eleanor set her spoon down. "You think you’re being careful. Meeting him in public. Keeping conversations short. But Richard doesn’t care about careful. He cares about patterns. And you’ve created a pattern."
[System perception: Eleanor Ashford is deliberately creating tension between Host and Victoria. Purpose: Unclear. Possible motivation: Testing Host’s reaction to family conflict.]
She was testing him again. Creating a scenario. Watching how he’d respond to pressure. To fear. To the threat of Richard Ashford’s attention.
Damien set his napkin on the table. Slowly. Deliberately.
"Mrs. Ashford."
"Eleanor."
"Eleanor." He met her eyes. Held them. "I came here because you invited me. I sat at your table. I ate your food. I answered your questions. And I’ve been honest about everything I can be honest about."
"Yes you have."
"But if your husband has been watching me this whole time, then this lunch isn’t an invitation. It’s an audition. And I’d rather know what role I’m auditioning for before I keep performing."
[Eleanor Ashford. Curiosity: 74% → 79%. Trust: 7% → 11%.]
Trust jumping. Because he’d called her out. Directly. Without flinching. Without apologizing. Eleanor Ashford was surrounded by people who nodded and smiled and agreed. And here was a broke student in a clearance suit calling her bluff.
Eleanor leaned back in her chair. Her blue eyes studied him for a long moment. Then she did something unexpected.
She smiled. A real smile. Not the practiced one. Not the socialite mask. Something genuine that crinkled the corners of her eyes and made her look ten years younger.
"You’re right," she said. "This is an audition. And the role is... complicated."
"What role?"
"My husband is a powerful man. Powerful men have enemies. Enemies who watch. Who listen. Who look for weaknesses." She paused. "My husband’s weakness is me."
[Eleanor Ashford. Emotional state: Vulnerable. Trust: 11% → 14%.]
"He neglects you," Damien said. Not a question.
Victoria’s head turned sharply. "Damien."
"It’s okay Victoria." Eleanor held up her hand. "He’s not wrong." She looked at Damien. "How did you know?"
"I didn’t. I guessed. Based on what Victoria told me. And based on the fact that you invited a 22-year-old student to lunch instead of having your husband handle it."
[Eleanor Ashford. Trust: 14% → 19%. Perception: Impressed.]
"You’re perceptive." She picked up her wine glass. Swirled it. "Richard and I haven’t shared a bedroom in two years. He has apartments in New York and London and Singapore. I have this house. We coexist. We don’t interact."
"That sounds lonely."
"It is." The word hung in the air. Raw. Honest. The most real thing she’d said all afternoon.
[Eleanor Ashford. Arousal: 3% → 5%. Emotional vulnerability: High.]
Two points. Her arousal had moved. Because he’d called her lonely. Because he’d seen her. Not the socialite. Not the mother. Not the Ashford. The woman. Lonely in a house with fourteen cameras and three floors and no one to touch her.
Victoria was watching. Her tag was volatile. Shifting. The trust she’d built with Damien was colliding with the reality of her mother opening up to him. It was a conflict she didn’t know how to process.
"Mother. Stop." Victoria’s voice was tight. "You’re oversharing."
"I’m being honest Victoria. Something this family doesn’t do enough." Eleanor turned back to Damien. "Richard wants to meet you tonight. He’ll come down for dinner. He’ll ask you questions. He’ll size you up. And then he’ll make a decision about you."
"What kind of decision?"
"Whether you’re a threat or an asset."
"And if I’m a threat?"
"Then you’ll disappear. Not physically. Socially. He’ll have you expelled. He’ll have The Vault shut down. He’ll make sure no employer in Los Angeles will hire you. He’ll erase you."
[Threat level: Critical. Richard Ashford. Social destruction capability: Maximum.]
"And if I’m an asset?"
"Then he’ll offer you something. A job. A favor. A connection. And in exchange, he’ll expect loyalty. Complete. Unquestioning. The kind of loyalty that comes with strings you can’t see."
[System recommendation: Do not accept any offer from Richard Ashford. Entanglement with Richard Ashford will restrict Host’s freedom and quest capabilities.]
"I don’t want his job," Damien said.
"Then what do you want?"
The question was simple. The answer was not. What did he want? Money? Power? Women? The system gave him all three. But sitting at this table with Eleanor’s lonely eyes and Victoria’s conflicted silence and Richard’s cameras watching from above, the answer felt different.
"I want to be left alone," he said.
Eleanor laughed. Soft. Sad. "Nobody gets left alone Damien. Not in this city. Not in this family."
The dessert sat untouched. The wine was half finished. The garden was beautiful and the sun was warm and everything looked perfect from the outside. That was the Ashford way. Perfect on the outside. Rotting on the inside.
"Richard will come down at 7," Eleanor said. "That gives you three hours."
"Three hours for what?"
"For me to decide whether I’m going to help you or let him destroy you."
[MAIN QUEST STAGE 3: Branching path detected.]
[Path A: Eleanor Ashford assists Host. Requires trust threshold of 30%. Current trust: 19%.]
[Path B: Host faces Richard Ashford alone. Probability of social destruction: 74%.]
[Host must increase Eleanor’s trust to 30% within 3 hours to unlock Path A.]
[System recommendation: Engage Eleanor emotionally. Build trust through authentic connection.]
Eleven points. He needed eleven more trust points in three hours. With Eleanor Ashford. The most guarded woman in Los Angeles. While her daughter sat three feet away. While her husband watched from above.
Victoria stood. "I need to use the restroom."
She walked toward the house. Her heels clicking on the stone. Fast. Controlled. The pace of a woman who needed to be alone.
Eleanor watched her go. Then she turned back to Damien.
"She likes you," Eleanor said quietly. "My daughter likes you. And she doesn’t like anyone."
"I know."
"Do you? Or do you just know what the surface looks like?" Eleanor leaned forward. Her perfume was subtle. Expensive. Something floral with a warmth underneath. "Victoria has never brought a boy home. Never introduced anyone to the family. Never followed anyone on Instagram. She built walls so high that even I can’t see over them."
"And you think I’m climbing those walls."
"I think you’re already on the other side." She studied his face. "The question is what you intend to do once you’re there."
[Eleanor Ashford. Arousal: 5% → 7%. Trust: 19% → 22%. Curiosity: 79%.]
Trust climbing. Three points. Because he’d listened. Because he’d understood. Because he hadn’t dismissed her concern for Victoria or made a joke. He’d taken it seriously.
"I’m not going to hurt her," Damien said.
"Everyone says that."
"I mean it."
"Everyone means it. And then they do it anyway." Her blue eyes were wet. Just barely. The faintest sheen. Gone in a blink. "I married Richard because he meant it too. And look where that got me."
[Eleanor Ashford. Emotional vulnerability: Maximum. Trust: 22% → 25%.]
Twenty-five. Five more points. He was close. But the conversation was reaching a tipping point. If he pushed too hard, she’d retreat behind her walls. If he didn’t push enough, he’d stay at twenty-five forever.
He needed something real. Something that wasn’t about Victoria. Something that was about her.
"You said you wanted to decide whether to help me or let Richard destroy me," Damien said. "But that’s not really what you’re deciding."
"What am I deciding?"
"Whether I’m worth trusting. Not with Victoria. With you."
[Eleanor Ashford. Arousal: 7% → 9%. Trust: 25% → 27%.]
Her breath caught. Barely. A micro-pause. The system caught it. He caught it. She’d been seen. Not as Victoria’s mother. Not as Richard’s wife. As Eleanor. A woman. Lonely. Untouched. Hungry for someone to look at her the way Damien was looking at her right now.
"That’s a bold thing to say," she whispered.
"I’m a bold person."
"In my house. At my table. With my husband watching from three floors up."
"Especially here."
[Eleanor Ashford. Arousal: 9% → 12%. Trust: 27% → 29%.]
One point. One point away from the threshold. One point away from Path A.
"Eleanor." He said her name. Not Mrs. Ashford. Not ma’am. Just Eleanor. The name her friends used. The name Richard used to use before he stopped using it. The name that reminded her she was a person and not an asset.
She stared at him. Her blue eyes. Victoria’s eyes. But warmer. Sadder. Deeper. Eyes that had seen too much and felt too little for too long.
"You should go," she said quietly.
"I have three hours."
"Two and a half now." She stood. Smoothed her dress. The mask was coming back. The socialite armor sliding into place. But slower than before. Heavier. Like she didn’t want to wear it anymore.
"Damien."
"Yes?"
"I’ll help you with Richard." She picked up her wine glass. Finished it in one sip. "Not because I trust you. But because I want to see what happens when someone stands up to my husband. And you might be the first person in twenty years who’s stupid enough to try."
[Eleanor Ashford. Trust: 29% → 31%. Threshold met.]
[MAIN QUEST STAGE 3: Path A unlocked.]
[Eleanor Ashford will assist Host during Richard Ashford encounter.]
[Stage 3 Objective updated: Survive dinner with Richard Ashford. Eleanor will intervene if necessary.]
[Reward for Stage 3 completion: +1000 EXP, +$10,000, Unlock Skill: Dominance Aura Level 1]
Thirty-one percent. He’d crossed the threshold. By saying her name. By seeing her. By being stupid enough to try.
"Eleanor. Thank you."
"Don’t thank me yet." She set the empty glass on the table. "Richard will be down in two hours. And he’s nothing like me."
She walked toward the house. Her pale blue dress swaying with each step. Graceful. Elegant. Alone.
[Eleanor Ashford. Arousal: 12%. Trust: 31%. Emotional state: Conflicted. Curiosity: 81%.]
[Victoria Ashford. Location: Inside the house. Emotional state: Unknown. Scanning blocked by interference.]
Victoria’s tag was blocked. Something in the house was interfering with the system’s scan. Or someone.
[System alert: Unknown interference detected. Possible counter-system technology in the estate.]
Counter-system technology. In the Ashford estate. Which meant someone in this house knew about systems. Knew how to block them.
The anonymous texter. VV Holdings. Richard Ashford’s estate.
The pieces were connecting. And the picture they formed was terrifying.
His phone buzzed. Unknown number.
Unknown: You’re in the house. Good.
Unknown: The interference you’re feeling is a system dampener. Third floor. Richard’s office.
Unknown: Richard doesn’t have a system. But he has something else.
Unknown: Something worse.
Unknown: Dinner is in 2 hours. Prepare accordingly.
Unknown: Because Richard Ashford is not what he seems.
