Lust Rebate System: From Nerd to LA God
Chapter 29: Two Hours
Damien sat alone at the table for ten minutes after Eleanor left.
The garden was quiet. Birds sang in the hedges. The fountain trickled softly. The kind of peace that money bought. Silence that cost millions.
His mind was racing. System dampener on the third floor. Richard Ashford had something that blocked the system. Not a system himself. Something else. Something worse. That’s what the anonymous texter had said.
[System status: Partial interference detected. Desire Reading Level 2: Degraded within estate grounds. Range reduced from 50 meters to 15 meters.]
Fifteen meters. His scanning range was cut by seventy percent. He could barely read tags in the same room. Let alone through walls or floors.
He needed to find Victoria. She’d gone inside upset. Her tag had been blocked by the interference. But if he got close enough, within fifteen meters, he could read her.
He stood and walked toward the French doors. A staff member appeared immediately. The woman in the black dress from earlier.
"Mr. Black. Mrs. Ashford has arranged for you to wait in the east parlor until dinner."
"I need to use the restroom."
"Down the hall. Second door on the left."
He walked inside. Past the restroom. Down the hall. Deeper into the house. The marble floors echoed. The art on the walls watched him. Old portraits. Ashford ancestors. Men in suits. Women in gowns. Generations of power staring down at a scholarship student who didn’t belong.
He found her on the second floor. Sitting on a window ledge at the end of a long corridor. Her legs pulled up. Her arms wrapped around her knees. The same posture Chloe had used. The same defensive shell.
[Victoria Ashford. Arousal: 6%. Trust: 28%. Fear: 41%. Anger: 22%.]
Fear. Forty-one percent. She was scared. Not of him. Not of her mother. Of her father.
"Victoria."
She looked up. Her blue eyes were red. Not crying. Close to it. Holding it together the way Ashfords held everything together. With discipline and silence and clenched teeth.
"You shouldn’t be up here," she said. "Richard’s office is on the third floor. If he sees you—"
"I needed to find you."
"Why?"
"Because your mother just told me your father has been watching me on cameras since I arrived. And because you left the table upset. And because you warned me about this place and I should have listened harder."
[Victoria Ashford. Trust: 28% → 31%. Fear: 41% → 34%.]
Trust up. Fear down. Because he’d come looking for her. Because he’d prioritized her over self-preservation. Because in a house full of cameras and danger, he’d climbed the stairs to check on her.
"My father is going to destroy you," Victoria said quietly. "You know that right?"
"Your mother said she’d help."
"My mother says a lot of things. She means about half of them." Victoria uncrossed her arms. "She likes you. I could tell. She laughed. Real laughs. She never laughs."
"She’s lonely."
"Of course she’s lonely. She’s married to Richard Ashford." Victoria’s voice hardened. "My father is not a good man Damien. He’s not a bad man either. He’s a machine. He calculates. He evaluates. He discards. And right now you’re being evaluated."
"What does he want from me?"
"I don’t know. That’s what scares me." She stood up from the window ledge. "When my father takes an interest in someone, it’s because they have something he needs. Or something he wants to remove. You’re either an asset or an obstacle."
"And you don’t know which one I am."
"Neither do you."
[Victoria Ashford. Trust: 31% → 34%. Curiosity: 81% → 84%.]
They stood in the corridor. Three feet apart. The afternoon light filtered through the window behind her. Her white dress. Her blue eyes. Her red-rimmed vulnerability.
"Victoria."
"What?"
"The thing your mother said. About you liking me. About walls."
"Don’t."
"I’m not going to push. But I need you to know something."
"What?"
"I’m not going to let your father destroy me. And I’m not going to let him use you to do it."
[Victoria Ashford. Trust: 34% → 38%. Arousal: 6% → 9%.]
Three points of trust. Three points of arousal. Small numbers. But they were moving. The ice was cracking. Slowly. Painfully. But cracking.
"You can’t promise that," she whispered.
"Watch me."
She stared at him. Five seconds. Ten. Then she did something he’d never seen her do. She smiled. Not the controlled smile she used in public. Not the cold curve of amusement she’d shown at The Vault. A real smile. Small. Fragile. Almost human.
"You’re impossible," she said.
"So I’ve been told."
She looked away. The smile faded. The mask started to rebuild. But it was slower than before. Heavier. Like she didn’t want to wear it anymore.
"Go downstairs," she said. "If Richard sees you on the second floor he’ll think you’re snooping."
"I was snooping."
"I know. But don’t let him catch you."
He turned to leave. Her voice stopped him.
"Damien."
"Yeah?"
"When my father offers you something tonight. And he will offer. Don’t accept. Whatever it is. Don’t accept."
"Why not?"
"Because my father doesn’t give gifts. He sets traps. And the wrapping is always beautiful."
[Victoria Ashford. Trust: 38%. Arousal: 9%. Fear: 28%.]
He went downstairs. The staff member guided him to the east parlor. A room with leather chairs and bookshelves and a fireplace that wasn’t lit. A glass of whiskey sat on the side table. Someone had poured it for him. He didn’t touch it.
He had ninety minutes until dinner. He used the time to prepare.
[Inventory check:]
[Mind Shield: Active. 2 hours remaining.]
[Dominance Aura: Available. 30 minutes duration.]
[Confidence Aura: Available. 1 hour duration.]
[Arousal Spike: Available. Cooldown: Ready.]
[Self-Defense Level 2: Active.]
He would activate Dominance Aura and Confidence Aura simultaneously right before Richard entered. Double layer. Maximum projection. For thirty minutes he’d project authority and calm at the same time. Enough to survive an introduction. Maybe enough to survive dinner.
His phone buzzed. Unknown number.
Unknown: The dampener on the third floor blocks your system. But it also blocks mine.
Unknown: I can’t see what’s happening inside the estate.
Unknown: You’re on your own tonight.
Unknown: But I can give you one piece of intelligence.
Unknown: Richard Ashford doesn’t have a system. He has a file.
Unknown: A physical file. In his office. Third floor. Locked drawer.
Unknown: That file contains everything about people like us. System holders.
Unknown: He’s been collecting data for years.
Unknown: He knows about the systems. Not how they work. But that they exist.
Unknown: And he hunts people who have them.
Damien read the message three times. Richard Ashford knew about systems. He hunted system holders. And he’d invited Damien into his home.
Damien: How do you know about the file?
Unknown: Because I’ve seen it.
Unknown: Three years ago. Before I went into hiding.
Unknown: Richard Ashford found me. Tested me. Offered me a deal.
Unknown: I refused.
Unknown: He destroyed my life in 72 hours.
Unknown: I rebuilt. But the scars remain.
Damien: You’re Victor Vance.
Unknown: ...
Unknown: Smart boy.
Unknown: Yes. I’m Victor. I have the Debt Collector System. And I’ve been watching you because you’re the first new host to appear in three years.
Unknown: Richard Ashford will try to do to you what he did to me.
Unknown: Don’t let him.
Unknown: Don’t accept his offer. Don’t go to the third floor. Don’t give him any reason to open that file.
Unknown: Survive dinner. Get out. Come find me.
Unknown: Downtown LA. Corner of 7th and Spring. Ask for V at the front desk.
Unknown: We need to talk. Face to face.
Unknown: Because Richard Ashford isn’t the only one hunting system holders.
Unknown: And I’d rather have you as an ally than an enemy.
The messages stopped. Victor Vance had revealed himself. The anonymous texter. The rival system holder. The one who’d been watching since day one.
And he was scared. Not of Damien. Of Richard Ashford. A man without a system. A man with a file. A man who hunted people like them.
[System alert: Rival system holder identified. Victor Vance. System type: Debt Collector.]
[Threat assessment: Moderate. Potential ally against greater threat.]
[Greater threat: Richard Ashford. Non-system human. Intelligence-based hunter.]
[Recommendation: Survive dinner. Contact Victor Vance after.]
[Warning: Trusting a rival system holder carries inherent risk. Proceed with caution.]
At 6:55 p.m., a staff member appeared at the parlor door.
"Mr. Black. Dinner is served."
Damien stood. Straightened his tie. Activated Dominance Aura and Confidence Aura simultaneously.
[Dominance Aura: Active. Duration: 30 minutes.]
[Confidence Aura: Active. Duration: 1 hour.]
[Combined effect: Authority projection maximum. Anxiety suppression maximum. Host presents as peak confidence and command.]
The warmth flooded his chest. The anxiety evaporated. His spine straightened. His jaw set. His eyes hardened.
He followed the staff member through the house. Past the portraits. Down the stairs. Through the foyer. Toward the dining room.
The dining room was large. Oak table. Twelve chairs. Three place settings. One at the head of the table. One to the right. One to the left.
Eleanor sat at the right. Pale blue dress changed to black. Hair down now. A glass of red wine in her hand. Her eyes met Damien’s. A slight nod. Barely perceptible. She was ready.
Victoria sat at the left. White dress unchanged. Face composed. Hands folded in her lap. The ice queen mask firmly in place. But her eyes were on him. Watching. Worried.
Damien stood between them. Waiting.
Then the door at the far end of the dining room opened.
And Richard Ashford walked in.
[System scan: Attempting...]
[ERROR. Target outside 15 meter range. Retrying.]
[Target entering range. Scanning...]
[Richard Ashford. Age 55. Arousal: N/A. Trust: 0%. Threat level: EXTREME.]
N/A arousal. The system couldn’t read it. Not because of interference. Because it was zero. Absolute zero. The man had no sexual energy whatsoever. He was pure calculation. Pure strategy. Pure control.
He was tall. 6’2". Silver hair. Gray suit. Blue eyes. The same blue as Eleanor and Victoria. But colder. Harder. The blue of a winter sky that would never warm up.
His face was handsome in a severe way. High cheekbones. Strong jaw. No smile. No expression. Just assessment. He looked at Damien the way a jeweler looks at a diamond. Searching for flaws.
"Damien Black." Richard’s voice was deep. Measured. The voice of a man who never raised it because he never needed to. "Please. Sit."
Damien sat at the opposite end of the table. Facing Richard. Twelve feet of oak between them.
Richard sat at the head. He didn’t touch his chair. The staff pulled it out for him. He simply lowered himself into it. Controlled. Precise. Every movement economical.
"I’ve been watching you," Richard said. No preamble. No small talk. "All afternoon. On my cameras. You’re an interesting young man."
"Thank you sir."
"Don’t thank me. Interesting is not a compliment. It’s an observation." He picked up his wine glass. Studied the color. Set it down without drinking. "You changed. Physically. In three days. My cameras at The Vault captured footage from last week. You were different. Smaller. Weaker. Invisible."
[Mind Shield: Active. Host’s composure: Stable.]
"I had a growth spurt."
"At 22." Richard’s expression didn’t change. "Fascinating."
The staff served dinner. Some kind of steak. Medium rare. Vegetables arranged like art. Nobody ate. The food sat on plates like props in a play.
"I’m going to be direct with you Damien," Richard said. "I don’t like games. I don’t like deception. And I don’t like variables I can’t explain."
"I’m not a variable sir. I’m a student."
"You are a variable. Students don’t fight four men with weapons and win. Students don’t seduce their coworkers and classmates in the same week. And students don’t catch the attention of my daughter and my wife simultaneously."
[Richard Ashford. Threat level: Extreme. Interrogation style: Direct. Mind Shield holding.]
"I haven’t tried to catch anyone’s attention."
"And yet you have. Which means either you’re lying about trying. Or you’re too stupid to understand your own effect on people. I don’t think you’re stupid Damien."
"Thank you sir."
"That wasn’t a compliment either."
Eleanor sipped her wine. Her tag was stable. Trust at 31. She was watching. Waiting. Ready to intervene if needed.
Victoria sat rigid. Her tag was tense. Fear at 28. Trust at 38. She was terrified. Not of Richard. Of what he might do to Damien.
Richard leaned forward. His elbows on the table. His fingers steepled. The posture of a man about to make an offer.
"I’m going to give you a choice Damien," he said. "Two options. And I expect an answer before dessert."
"What are the options?"
"Option one. You accept a position at Ashford Holdings. A paid internship. $80,000 a year. You leave The Vault. You continue your studies under my supervision. And in exchange, you become useful to me."
[System warning: Do not accept. Entanglement with Richard Ashford restricts Host freedom.]
"And option two?"
Richard smiled. It was the first expression he’d shown. And it was worse than the blankness. Because it was real. Cold. And honest.
"Option two. You walk out of my house. You return to your apartment. And tomorrow morning you find that your scholarship has been revoked. Your employment terminated. And your name added to a do-not-hire list that covers every major employer in Los Angeles."
[Mind Shield: Active. Host composure: Strained but holding.]
The room was silent. The steak cooled on the plates. The wine sat untouched. Eleanor’s hand tightened on her glass. Victoria’s eyes closed.
Richard stared at Damien. Waiting. The smile still on his face. The cold blue eyes patient. A man who had made this offer before. Many times. And had never been refused.
[System recommendation: Stall. Do not accept. Do not refuse. Buy time.]
Damien looked at Richard. Then at Eleanor. Then at Victoria. Then back at Richard.
"Can I think about it?" he asked.
Richard’s smile widened. "You have until dessert."
