Married the Sick Uncle – Just Waiting to Inherit His Fortune
Chapter 484: A Woman's Mind is the Hardest to Guess
Anne Sutton also felt that she probably needed to find a job soon.
Her health had been poor, and she hadn’t fully recovered from the divorce, so she had stayed to help out at her mother’s shop.
When Sharon Sutton had brought it up just now, Anne hadn’t meant anything else by her reaction; she genuinely thought it was a good idea.
She had no idea why her sister had flown into a rage.
‘Her temper has been getting worse and worse lately. It just goes to show she really does need a change of scenery.’
Anne Sutton said, “You should find a job! What is it you want to do?”
“I studied design. I want to be a designer.”
‘Becoming a great designer was the life she wanted.’
‘Not this—helping out at the shop every day.’
Anne Sutton said, “You can! If there’s something you want to do, then you should take it seriously.”
“Have you thought about which company you want to apply to?”
Sharon Sutton said, “Zephyr.”
It was a company under the Linden Group.
In Veridia, if you looked into the ownership of most major companies, you’d find the Linden Group’s influence.
Zephyr was a jewelry company, and the Linden Group held a controlling interest.
Anne Sutton said, “Then you should go for it! Have you sent in your resume?”
Sharon Sutton said, “I did. They invited me for an interview.”
“That’s great.” Anne Sutton felt a sense of relief. “Sharon, I’m so happy you’re moving forward.”
Sharon Sutton nodded. “With you by my side, Sister, I’m not afraid of anything. I don’t know why, but whenever I see you with Nathan Fawcett now, I get flustered. I’m always afraid you’ll be stolen away from me.”
Anne Sutton listened to her sister’s childish words and gave a weary smile.
She walked out of the room and saw Ian sitting there, eating something. A few customers noticed him and wanted to speak to him but didn’t dare approach.
Ian was handsome and looked a lot like Nathan Fawcett—the type of person who just exudes an air of elegance.
It felt as if getting too close would bother him, so they preferred to watch him from a distance.
Anne Sutton came out of the kitchen and walked over to him, watching her son munching away like a little foodie. “Is it yummy?”
Ian nodded.
“Don’t eat too much. We’re having dumplings in a little while.”
Ian said, “Okay, Mommy.”
When the others realized Anne Sutton was Ian’s mother, they were incredibly envious. “Your son is so handsome!”
“His father must be very handsome too!”
“I’m so jealous!”
Sharon Sutton walked out and saw the customers holding Anne Sutton up in conversation.
Previously, when Nathan Fawcett had come over with Anne Sutton, the customers would see them and also comment on how handsome Nathan was.
‘A handsome man, and so wealthy.’
‘And a cute son!’
Sharon Sutton couldn’t put into words how envious she was.
She thought of her own child.
That evening, they had dumplings for dinner.
Just as they were finishing up, Nathan Fawcett sent a message saying he had arrived to pick up Ian.
Ian had school the next day; otherwise, he could have stayed there with Anne Sutton.
Anne Sutton said, “Your dad’s here to pick you up. He’s waiting for you at the entrance.”
Mrs. Sutton said, “Nathan’s here? Why don’t you invite him in? Ask if he wants some dumplings. He used to love them.”
Nathan Fawcett loved the dumplings Mrs. Sutton made, especially her filling.
Anne Sutton smiled. “He’s in a hurry to get back.”
She could tell that Nathan Fawcett was avoiding Sharon Sutton. He probably didn’t want to see her again and risk another conflict.
Anne Sutton was no fool.
Even though nothing had been said outright, she had a pretty good idea of what was really going on.
She glanced at her sister. Upon hearing that Nathan Fawcett had arrived, Sharon’s expression became very complicated.
The smile on her face vanished.
‘I just hope she’s only been this way lately because she’s exhausted from helping at the shop.’
Anne Sutton just wanted her to get better.
‘She was her only sister.’
That was why, even when Sharon did things that upset her, Anne wouldn’t hold it against her.
She was willing to let Sharon save face and give her a chance to change her ways.
Anne Sutton said her goodbyes to Mrs. Sutton and led Ian out the door. Nathan Fawcett’s Bentley was parked right there.
He had many cars.
He usually drove a different one each time he went out.
He didn’t want people to know his whereabouts or be followed.
He was in a hurry to leave, so the engine was still running, the hazard lights blinking.
When Anne Sutton led Ian outside, the boy was reluctant to leave. “Mommy, I want to sleep with you.”
“You have school tomorrow morning,” Anne Sutton said. “It’s too late to go from here.”
The Linden family home was closer to his school.
The homes in that neighborhood were zoned for specific educational resources, so Ian had to attend school there.
Anne Sutton didn’t want to see her son go, either.
Seeing the two of them, Nathan Fawcett had already gotten out of the car.
Before Anne Sutton even got close, she could feel his gaze fixed on her.
She led Ian over to Nathan Fawcett. Seeing his son’s unhappy face, Nathan asked, “What’s wrong with Ian?”
Anne Sutton smiled. “He doesn’t want to go back. I was just trying to convince him.”
Nathan Fawcett asked, “How many days are you planning to stay here?”
If Anne Sutton hadn’t come back to stay here, none of this would be happening.
Anne Sutton said, “We’ll see.”
Nathan Fawcett had Ian get in the car first, his deep-set eyes fixed on Anne Sutton as if he had something he wanted to say.
Anne Sutton watched her son get into the car before turning back to glance at him, her eyes meeting his. She felt a little helpless. “What are you looking at me for?”
Nathan Fawcett said, “I was just wondering if you were going to use this as an opportunity to cut ties with me.”
After she had rejected his proposal, Nathan Fawcett had become very sensitive about these things.
He couldn’t tell how important he truly was in Anne Sutton’s heart.
So many women wanted to marry him.
But in front of Anne Sutton, everything he had seemed to be worth nothing.
Getting her to marry him had somehow become the most difficult task he had ever faced—harder than negotiating a business deal.
Anne Sutton laughed at his assumption. “Am I an idiot? Our son is still with you! With him as a hostage, even if I wanted to cut ties, wouldn’t I have to butter you up first?”
Nathan Fawcett chuckled at her words.
He leaned in, wrapped an arm around her waist, and brought his lips down for a kiss.
It was nighttime and they were partially obscured by trees, so it wasn’t too conspicuous.
Still, his action made Anne Sutton blush. “Ian is watching.”
“It’s not like he hasn’t seen it before,” Nathan Fawcett said. “Do you like me a little more today?”
In truth, when she had left with Sharon Sutton the day before, Nathan Fawcett had been genuinely afraid he might lose her.
Thankfully, she had sent him a message later, which had put his mind at ease.
Anne Sutton said, “You guess.”
“Making me guess again,” Nathan Fawcett said. “You women are the hardest to read.”
Anne Sutton said, “You should get going. It’s late, and I need to get back inside and sleep soon too.”
They were still outside Mrs. Sutton’s shop.
Anne Sutton had originally planned to drop Ian off at the Linden family home before heading back herself, but Nathan Fawcett, worried it would be a hassle for her, had come over himself.
She felt a sense of relief that he was taking care of these things, which naturally made her quite happy.
