Nathan Fawcett said, “Do you want a ride? I can take you home.”

“No, thanks,” Anne Sutton said. “I’m going with Sharon. She’s coming back with me, so it’s better if she doesn’t see you. She doesn’t like you right now.”

When Nathan Fawcett heard Sharon Sutton’s name, his expression immediately darkened. He didn’t press Anne any further.

It was an unspoken understanding between them.

After saying his piece, Nathan Fawcett got in his car.

Anne Sutton stood by the road, watching Ian and Nathan Fawcett leave. Only after they were gone did she turn back and walk to the shop entrance.

She saw Sharon Sutton standing there.

Seeing her at the entrance, Anne smiled. “What are you doing here?”

Sharon Sutton replied, “I’m waiting for you. Aren’t we going home?”

“Then let’s go,” Anne said. “I’ll go tell Mom.”

Anne had to work tomorrow morning.

Mrs. Sutton always finished work late, sometimes even sleeping at the shop, so Anne didn’t wait up for her.

Sharon Sutton stood at the entrance, staring at her own shadow. She had seen everything that just happened by the roadside.

‘Nathan Fawcett and Anne Sutton’s relationship is great, completely unaffected.’

‘She’s just letting me stay with her out of pity.’

In the short time she stood there, Sharon’s mind raced with thoughts.

Seeing how well things were going for Anne and Nathan made her feel sick. Even Anne’s concern now seemed like mockery in her eyes.

‘Mocking me for my unhappy marriage, for being betrayed by David Hayes…’

After saying goodbye to Mrs. Sutton, Anne returned to find Sharon standing at the entrance. “Let’s go,” she said.

Her car was parked in the adjacent lot.

Anne reached out and gently put an arm around Sharon, but Sharon saw her and uncomfortably pulled away.

Seeing her reaction, Anne didn’t say anything.

She carried her things to the car.

Sharon got in the car.

She sat in the passenger seat, looked around the car, and asked, “Did Nathan Fawcett give you this car?”

“…” Anne said, “No, I bought it myself.”

She’d bought it when she arrived; Justin Shields had even helped her pick it out. Mrs. Sutton had driven it for a few days, but now she had bought herself a new car.

She felt she was too old and wasn’t used to driving such a nice car.

Sharon heard Anne’s explanation but didn’t quite believe it.

‘Anne bought the house, and Anne bought the car…’

‘Why do I find that so hard to believe?’

Anne glanced at her and chuckled. “Do you really think if it were from Nathan, he would buy me a car this ‘bad’?”

The car she had in Westhaven was a gift from Nathan.

And even that was because he was afraid she’d be too conspicuous at the hospital, so he didn’t dare get her something too expensive.

But it was still much nicer than her current one.

Anne’s current car was only worth a few hundred thousand.

She worked, saved her salary, and did some investing in her free time, earning a bit of money.

She wasn’t fabulously wealthy, but she was more or less financially independent.

At the very least, she had indeed bought her car and house herself.

She wasn’t married to Nathan Fawcett yet.

Although Nathan had gifted her shares in the Fawcett Group and even made her the chairwoman, she didn’t dare touch his assets casually.

‘As long as I don’t depend on him, I’ll always have a choice, no matter what.’ That was why she had the confidence to turn him down when he proposed.

…

Sharon sat beside her, silent.

Anne was driving. When the car stopped at a red light, she turned to Sharon and said, “What’s been wrong with you these past couple of days? You seem upset every time you talk to me.”

Hearing Anne’s question, Sharon answered guiltily, “Nothing!”

Anne said, “If you’re unhappy about something, just say it. Sharon, I didn’t come back to fight with you. You’re my sister, not my enemy.”

Sharon looked down, her voice full of grievance. “I’m just afraid you don’t love me anymore, sis.”

“…” Anne said, “You should know how I treat you. I’ve worried endlessly about your problems. If you hadn’t asked me back then, I wouldn’t have promoted David Hayes.”

At that, Sharon glanced at Anne. “You knew what kind of person David was all along. You knew he wouldn’t treat me well after he got promoted, so you promoted him on purpose, didn’t you?”

Anne was stunned by Sharon’s words.

‘Wow.’

‘She’d actually managed to stump me with that question.’

Anne then let out a small laugh. “That’s right! I knew what kind of person he was. It’s not like I didn’t warn you about him, but you were too naive back then and refused to believe me. What could I do besides go along with what you wanted? You’re not actually trying to pin this on me now, are you?”

If Sharon was really going to blame her for this, Anne was going to lose her temper.

She felt she had already been more than patient with Sharon.

Hearing her, Sharon said, “You always act so high and mighty, like you’re some kind of saint, but I’m the only one who ends up getting hurt.”

“…” Hearing that, Anne simply found a spot and pulled the car over. She looked at Sharon. “Alright, then you tell me. What should I do? What do I have to do to satisfy you, Miss Sutton? You know, you don’t have to put up with me. You can leave, do whatever you want. I really didn’t expect that trying to help you would just cause more trouble.”

Hearing Anne’s words, Sharon’s fingers tightened into fists. She had nowhere else to go.

She had nothing.

She was divorced now, and this is what she had become.

Tears streamed down Sharon’s face. Since everything was out in the open, she stopped denying it and laid her thoughts bare. “Why did you have to meddle back then and take my place with Nathan Fawcett? If you hadn’t interfered, I would have been the one with him! I wouldn’t have stayed with David Hayes, and none of this would have happened. You said you were doing it for my own good, but you weren’t! You’re the one who ruined my life.”

“…” Listening to Sharon, Anne was so angry she had to laugh, but she was at a loss for words.

‘Maybe…’

‘…she’s not entirely wrong.’

‘If I hadn’t taken her place in the Sutton family back then, maybe she wouldn’t have ended up with David Hayes.’

Anne stared at Sharon and said, “So that’s why you want to be with Nathan Fawcett?”

Sharon looked at her. “I don’t.”

“Why do you think Nathan was angry? Did you really think I wouldn’t know?”

“What did he tell you?” ‘I didn’t even do anything that day.’

‘If Nathan was slandering me, I could just deny it.’

Sharon felt quite confident.

Anne said, “Don’t think you can do things and get away with it. You haven’t been right since we got back that day. I took you on that trip hoping you could clear your head, but what did you do? Do you have any consideration for me at all?”

“Did you take me to clear my head, or did you just want to show off how happy you are? You just wanted everyone to know how well you’re doing now, didn’t you? Your perfect little family, how wonderful for you!”

Hearing this, Anne laughed. “If that’s how you feel, then what do you want? Should I give Nathan back to you? Didn’t you say he was yours? Then go fight for him! It’s not like we’re married. If you think you can steal him away, then go right ahead!”
