“Are you sure?” Anne Sutton stared into his eyes.

Nathan Fawcett looked at her, a little guilt-ridden. He reached out and took her hand. “Anne.”

Anne Sutton glanced at the two children beside them. “Ian, Finn, why don’t you two go upstairs and play for a bit.”

Ian could tell Anne Sutton had something to discuss with Nathan Fawcett, so he quickly agreed and led Finn upstairs.

Only then did Anne Sutton turn back to Nathan Fawcett. “You’re not a child anymore. You need to take care of your own body.”

Nathan Fawcett said, “I’m scared.”

His eyes were filled with apprehension.

‘A man like him actually had things he was afraid of?’

Anne Sutton looked at the man, feeling a lump form in her throat. “What are you afraid of?”

Nathan Fawcett said, “I’m afraid they’ll find something wrong with me. I’m afraid I won’t be able to stay by your and Ian’s side. What would you do without me?”

“…” A heavy feeling washed over Anne Sutton as she heard Nathan Fawcett’s words.

The two went back upstairs, and she had Nathan Fawcett lie down.

She sat on the edge of the bed, tucked him in, and held his hand, speaking earnestly. “Don’t think like that. If there is something wrong with your health, finding out early means we can treat it. What if you keep putting it off and your body completely breaks down?”

Nathan Fawcett looked at the woman before him. “But I’m really so scared! I haven’t even married you yet. We haven’t truly been together, and there are so many things I still want to do. Anne, tell me, what should I do?”

He raised a hand, his large palm cupping her face. He longed for her to marry him, yet he feared he wouldn’t live to see that day.

‘Maybe it’s because I’ve been feeling unwell so often lately.’

He thought back to all those years he’d been alive but sick—everyone knew he was like a dead man walking. But he hadn’t been this scared back then.

Now that he had a wife and child, it was as if he’d suddenly become a coward.

Anne Sutton looked at Nathan Fawcett, then leaned down and kissed his cheek.

Nathan Fawcett was speechless. “…”

He looked at her. “What are you doing?”

Anne Sutton said, “Let’s get married.”

“…” Nathan Fawcett stared at her in disbelief. “Why?”

‘She turned me down before, didn’t she?’

Anne Sutton said, “I’ll take you for a check-up tomorrow. Get yourself healthy, and we’ll get married.”

“What if I can’t get better?” He was feeling avoidant now, not even wanting to go to the hospital.

The housekeeper had told him to get a check-up, but he hadn’t wanted to go.

‘I can’t believe the housekeeper actually tattled on me.’

Hearing this, Anne Sutton said, “If you can’t get better… then I’ll still marry you! To be honest, I’ve been thinking about it lately. Even if I don’t marry Nathan Fawcett, I won’t marry anyone else in this world. I’m not a teenager anymore; I don’t have the energy to get to know someone new. And even though you make me unhappy sometimes, I’m willing to put up with it.”

Nathan Fawcett listened to her, his gaze falling to the hand he held in his palm.

Her hand was so much fairer and more slender than his.

Nathan Fawcett said, “You don’t have to agree just because you pity me.”

Anne Sutton said, “I’m taking you to the hospital for a check-up tomorrow. No matter what, let’s figure out your health first. If the situation is really that bad, we’ll make a new plan then. Nathan… you asked me earlier today what I would do if you were gone. Honestly, I haven’t figured that out either.”

‘If he were gone…’

Just the thought of it was suffocating.

The days when Nathan Fawcett was gone had been incredibly difficult for her.

It was a period of her life she never wanted to look back on.

Hearing her words, Nathan Fawcett said, “I won’t let anything happen to me.”

“Then I’m taking you for a check-up tomorrow.”

Whatever was coming, they had to face it.

「…」

Anne Sutton went to take a shower and returned afterward.

Nathan Fawcett was still awake.

He looked at her and said, “By the way, Sharon Sutton said today that she’s going to Westhaven.”

Hearing this, Anne Sutton said, “Is that so? I saw her outside my mom’s shop today. I gave her a piece of my mind, too.”

Nathan Fawcett said, “It seems that’s why she changed her mind.”

“She can’t find a good job out here now, so let her go back to Westhaven. If she has the audacity to go after you, she should have the energy to face the Hayes Family.”

Sharon Sutton and David Hayes’s divorce wasn’t finalized yet.

They had only signed the divorce agreement; there were still other procedures to go through.

Besides, there was now a mandatory divorce cooling-off period.

Nathan Fawcett looked at her and wrapped his arms around her. “Wife.”

“…” Anne Sutton retorted, “I haven’t married you yet! Who are you calling ‘wife’?”

“But you said you’d marry me today.”

“…” Anne Sutton was starting to regret it. “Can I take back what I just said?”

Nathan Fawcett raised an eyebrow. “No.”

“I really don’t want to be with you!” Anne Sutton said to Nathan Fawcett. “I’ve never met anyone like you.”

The two chatted for a while before falling asleep.

The next morning, Ian and Finn got up.

Finn sat next to Nathan Fawcett and asked, “Dad, aren’t you going to work today?”

“I have to go to the hospital,” Nathan Fawcett said, looking gently at Finn.

Finn asked, “Are you going to work at the hospital?”

Nathan Fawcett chuckled at his question.

Ian looked at his father and asked, “Dad, are you sick?”

“…” Nathan Fawcett marveled at his son’s perceptiveness. “No, I’m taking your mom to work.”

Anne Sutton brought out the food. “Time to eat! Ian and Finn, don’t you have classes today?”

Their days were very busy.

They had a lot to do.

Besides their school classes, the two little ones also had other lessons to attend when they got home.

The pace at school was too slow.

Nathan Fawcett felt it couldn’t keep up with the two children’s intelligence.

So he had tutors teach them more advanced courses they were interested in.

Because Nathan Fawcett was going to the hospital for a check-up, he couldn’t eat anything.

He sat to the side, watching Anne Sutton, and said, “I want to eat too.”

“You can’t,” Anne Sutton said. “I’ll take you to eat after your check-up is done.”

“…” Because of this, Nathan Fawcett sulked the entire time.

They arrived at the hospital and he had his tests done.

Anne Sutton wasn’t in charge of Nathan Fawcett’s case, so she didn’t know the details.

The test results weren’t out yet, so Nathan Fawcett went to work first.

Anne Sutton took the report and went to find Anna Linden.

Anna Linden was sitting on the sofa, holding the files, her expression complicated.

Anne Sutton looked at her. “How is Nathan’s condition?”

Hearing this, Anna Linden looked up at Anne Sutton.

Seeing the way she was looking at her, Anne Sutton asked, “Is it serious?”

“His condition is showing signs of a relapse,” Anna Linden said. “If things don’t look good, he might need a second surgery.”

“…” Anne Sutton frowned upon hearing this.

The first surgery was already incredibly difficult.

If he really had to have a second one, the risks would be enormous.

Anna Linden said, “For now, just let him rest and recover. Have him step back from company matters so he doesn’t get too tired.”

Hearing Anna Linden’s advice, Anne Sutton asked, “Does he not need to be hospitalized?”

“Let him rest at home for now,” Anna Linden said. “If you make him come to the hospital, he won’t be able to sit still anyway. I’ll prescribe him some medication and we’ll see if there’s any improvement.”
