For a brief moment, Skye wanted to throw the thing in her hand straight into the face of some bearded bastard!
Because the other party seemed to have the exact same idea!
However, the two of them had both experienced hunger before. No matter how grandly they had once declared that, someday, they would live such extravagant lives that they could eat as much bread as they wanted—eat one piece and throw another away—once food was actually in their hands, leaving it uneaten made them uncomfortable.
So, in perfect agreement, the two of them began wolfing down their cotton candy.
Henry finished his first. Then he lightly flicked the wooden stick forward, hitting Skye squarely in the forehead, before bursting into unrestrained laughter.
The girl didn’t stop either. She finished her own cotton candy and hurled the stick as hard as she could!
That thick skin of his, which even bullets couldn’t penetrate, obviously wasn’t going to be fazed by a tiny wooden stick. It simply bounced off.
Just as Skye was preparing to stuff the ice cream in her right hand into that laughing wide-open mouth, a palm smacked the top of her head!
Catherine Hepburn delivered one smack each to Henry and Skye. "No manners! Pick up the trash from the ground. You can’t just throw things wherever you please."
Once Grandma had spoken, who would dare disobey?
Henry and Skye both put on aggrieved expressions. "Oh, okay."
They resignedly picked up the trash they had thrown and looked for an opportunity to toss it into a garbage can.
They say children are the most likely to imitate the people around them. Catherine Hepburn absolutely refused to believe that Skye had learned this expression all by herself!
How had she never noticed how troublesome Henry was before? If she’d known, she would definitely have kicked him out of the house, and sent him as far away as possible. A man in his thirties still acting like a child—he was probably beyond saving.
As for Skye, she could let it slide. The girl was only fourteen and still a minor. She had that privilege.
As they looked around for a garbage can, Henry was already eyeing the next food stall. "Kate, do you want a beer?"
Before the old lady could answer, the little brat eagerly cut in. "I want one too!"
"Finish your ice cream first." Henry shot her down, casually snatching the wooden stick from Skye’s hand to keep her from using it as a weapon again. Just because he wasn’t afraid of it didn’t mean everyone else in this crowded place was.
After throwing away the trash, he brought back two large cups of draft beer. Henry handed one to the old lady, making sure she had a firm grip on it with both hands, then proceeded to gulp down his own in a few swallows!
He wiped the foam from his mouth and ignored the girl’s antics as he surveyed the bustling World Carnival.
A stage had been erected in the center of the square. A band was already onstage, adjusting the sound system and their instruments. Did that mean someone was about to perform?
It wasn’t Maroon 5, whom he’d met the last time.
Their debut album had already been released. Songs About Jane had received an enthusiastic response from radio stations and had debuted at number six on the Billboard charts.
The group was now trying to strike while the iron was hot, appearing on programs and promoting their songs everywhere to boost album sales.
The members of this band were all unfamiliar faces. Even so, there was something inexplicably familiar about the scene before Henry.
When the host stood onstage and shouted, "Let’s welcome North America’s most popular singer, Macy Gray!"
The R&B and soul singer was greeted by cheers. With her distinctive raspy voice, she performed one of her hit singles, bringing the carnival to another small climax.
But the moment the female singer took the stage, Henry suddenly remembered where that sense of familiarity came from.
Wasn’t this straight out of Spider-Man?
The Green Goblin’s spectacular debut!
Calling it his debut wasn’t entirely accurate. According to the movie’s plot, Norman Osborn had already developed dissociative personality disorder after experimenting on himself with the Goblin serum. The Goblin personality had already stormed into some company’s experimental facility, smashed their experimental subjects to pieces, and incidentally captured a four-star general.
However, that experiment had been a classified project, so the media hadn’t reported it extensively—or perhaps the military involved had deliberately suppressed the news.
This time, though, countless eyes were watching at a public event. If the Green Goblin caused a major incident here, there was no way to keep it out of the news.
So...
Henry hadn’t even finished sorting through his thoughts when a sharp turbine whine reached his ears, shattering the last trace of wishful thinking in his mind.
Unlike the aircraft commonly seen in modern society, its sound grew steadily louder through his super-hearing. Clearly, whatever it was had been approaching from a distance.
Henry glanced at where he was standing.
He wasn’t particularly close to the high-rise balcony where representatives of the event’s organizer, Osborn Industries, were gathered.
But if that platform were blown apart, debris could potentially scatter all the way to where he stood.
Staying put wasn’t exactly safe.
He couldn’t reveal any ability to see the future or predict danger, so Henry had to find an excuse.
"Kate, that performance over there looks interesting. Shall we go take a look?"
The old lady naturally had no objection.
As for the beer in her hand, she’d only taken a few sips. Feeling that she’d sufficiently wetted her throat, she’d stopped drinking, and Skye had taken it over under the pretext of lightening her burden.
Now Skye was preparing to sneak a drink when no one was looking.
Before the little brat could taste the alcoholic beverage, Henry reached up and snatched it away. He tipped his head back and drained it.
He finished the beer even faster than before!
Skye angrily kicked him in the shin again.
Perhaps she’d gotten quite experienced at it by now. Skye’s kick was more an expression of dissatisfaction than an attempt to hurt him. She didn’t kick hard enough to hurt her own foot, merely leaving a footprint on Henry’s trousers and calling it a victory.
With an empty beer cup in each hand, Henry had no free hand to suppress the rebellious little girl.
"Skye, take Kate over there first. I’ll return the cups and catch up. Don’t let her fall."
"I’m thirsty too!"
"Good girl. I’ll buy you some juice." Henry pointed toward the juice stand in the distance. "You two go ahead and see what you want. Order me a cup of jackfruit juice."
"What kind of weird taste is that? Do they even sell something like that?"
"If they don’t, just order me something good. Go on. If you’re too slow, you’ll have to queue again."
In reality, the juice stand was operating quickly, and the crowd wasn’t particularly large. There wasn’t much of a line at all.
But Henry’s words seemed deliberately designed to give Skye an opening.
The girl immediately thought of how she could mess with him. She intended to order him some bizarre-flavored drink before he caught up.
That made Skye considerably more enthusiastic. Linking arms with Catherine Hepburn, she headed toward the juice stand.
Although Henry was wearing glasses, his current eyesight still wasn’t good enough to make out exactly who was standing on the high-rise balcony. He couldn’t tell whether Peter Parker was somewhere in the carnival crowd below, temporarily working as a photographer.
In fact, Henry didn’t even know what Peter Parker looked like in this world. He probably wouldn’t recognize him even if he saw him.
After returning the beer cups to the girl at the beer stall, who was dressed like an Austrian village girl, Henry wondered whether he should intervene since he happened to be here and reduce the number of casualties.
Come to think of it, the Green Goblin was attacking because he had a personal grudge against members of the Osborn Industries board.
But his battle with Spider-Man would spread the destruction and hurt innocent bystanders.
If the two of them didn’t fight, perhaps there wouldn’t be so many civilian casualties.
Yet Spider-Man’s original intention was to save people and stop the Green Goblin’s rampage.
And from Spider-Man’s perspective, there was no way for him to know whether the Green Goblin was targeting specific individuals and would leave once he’d finished with them, or whether he was launching a terrorist attack against innocent civilians.
New York had only been subjected to a major terrorist attack the previous year. Naturally, that made everyone more inclined to imagine the worst.
In short, this was one damn muddled mess.
