Before Henry had figured out what he was going to do, and before he could even reunite with the old lady and Skye, the Green Goblin came swooping in on his flying glider, trailing a plume of black smoke behind him.
The New Yorkers’ nerves of steel were on full display at this moment.
For one thing, this was a fantastical world, and there were still a bunch of enormous novelty balloons floating through the sky. Most people probably mistook the tiny figure in the air for some kind of performance. Some even cheered loudly.
That was, until the Green Goblin flew past the high-rise balcony and threw several specially modified pumpkin bombs!
The reason they were called specially modified was because these pumpkin bombs didn’t merely blow apart a sizable section of the high-rise balcony. One of them even blasted several Osborn Industries board members into oblivion, leaving not so much as a corpse!
That kind of power had never been displayed in the movie. Whether it was when the Green Goblin later bombed Spider-Man, or when the second Green Goblin himself took a hit from one, the results were nowhere near this devastating. Spider-Man had merely suffered a damaged mask and a bleeding face, while the second Green Goblin had only sustained severe burns over half his face.
If the pumpkin bombs really had the same power, then against ordinary people they could blow someone apart without even leaving ashes behind.
It was hard to imagine just how strong the impact resistance of Spider-Man and people enhanced by the Goblin serum actually was.
Was their skin alone enough to stop bullets? Or did their skin have some kind of enhanced resistance to heat and fire?
Henry was still ranting internally when chunks of debris blasted out from the collapsing balcony, flying everywhere and throwing the New Yorkers below into a panic.
Although the pieces capable of reaching this far weren’t particularly large, nobody wanted to stand there and take them head-on.
The New Yorkers scattered in all directions.
Henry didn’t do anything too conspicuous. He simply crouched and fled along with everyone around him. At most, he helped someone who had twisted an ankle, or pulled someone out of the path of falling debris, quietly steering people away from serious injuries.
Skye was, after all, someone who had lived in the harsh environment of the sewers. And she remembered that the old lady had treated her well.
The moment the explosion happened, she immediately dragged Catherine away from the danger. Even though the elderly woman’s legs weren’t particularly nimble, Skye never considered letting go. She simply supported her and kept moving.
After pushing his way through the crowd and reuniting with the old woman and the girl, Henry knew that once Spider-Man appeared and started fighting the Green Goblin, the area of destruction would only grow.
In fact, given the circumstances, it was no wonder Spider-Man’s first instinct upon appearing was to find a way to take down the Green Goblin.
The range of destruction this guy had caused was simply too great, and the situation was too severe. Nobody could afford to gamble that he would stop after blowing something up once.
When terrorists cause trouble, don’t they always head for crowded places so they can hurt as many innocent people as possible?
So Henry picked up the two of them, one tucked under each arm, and ran farther away, doing everything he could to put distance between them and the carnival grounds.
He ran all the way out of the square where the carnival was being held and into the shelter of a nearby building.
After setting the two down, Henry positioned himself in front of them to shield them before cautiously peeking out at the distant scene.
Neither of the two screamed, but the sound of their heartbeats made it clear that neither was remotely calm.
Still, humans seemed to have a natural instinct for courting death.
Thinking they were safe, the two of them copied Henry’s movements, poking their heads out at different heights to see what was happening.
"Henry, can you grab that green guy for us?" the old lady, with her head poking out above the Kryptonian’s, made a wish.
"Forget it, Kate. It’s true that I’m not afraid of explosions or punches. But I can’t fly. He’s riding that flying thing, and no matter how high I jump from the ground, I can’t reach him. How am I supposed to catch him? Leave it to Spider-Man."
Henry’s excuse earned him a look of contempt from the little head below him.
Some of the Kryptonian’s ridiculously overpowered abilities had already been exposed in front of Skye.
For some reason, the girl had never revealed any of this to outsiders, even though Henry had never actually asked her to keep it secret.
She might not say anything, but whenever she heard a certain annoying bastard blatantly lie, she couldn’t help looking at him with contempt.
It was almost as if she were saying, Let’s see how long you can keep hiding it.
Henry immediately grabbed the brat’s face with one hand and dragged her backward.
If you couldn’t behave yourself and keep your eyes under control, then stop looking around.
The police had already been stationed around the carnival for security. Their first priority was to evacuate the civilians and clear out an area where the battle could take place.
Police officers patrolling nearby quickly drove over to provide backup. Drawing their issued pistols, they surrounded Spider-Man and the Green Goblin and ordered both sides to stop and surrender.
Even though New Yorkers quite liked the little Spider-Man—especially those he’d helped, many of whom had publicly spoken in his defense to the media—his supporters had become even more adamant thanks to the Daily Bugle constantly portraying Spider-Man as a menace.
But the police had never encouraged vigilantes. If anything, they were hostile toward them.
At least, Henry had heard George Stacy, the police commissioner, complain more than once about how Spider-Man had interfered with one operation or another.
Worse, those covert operations weren’t necessarily being conducted by the NYPD.
They could belong to the DEA, the FBI, or the ATF.
When these federal agencies had their operations disrupted, they weren’t going to directly track down the elusive Spider-Man. Their pressure would instead come down on the New York City Police Department.
So it was understandable that some officers at the grassroots level might privately support Spider-Man’s actions.
But George Stacy, as police commissioner, was furious. He had made it clear in public that he would not express support for Spider-Man, and had instructed his officers to arrest him.
Anyone who had someone else constantly dump blame on them, forcing them to shoulder responsibility for things they hadn’t done—if they could still enjoy that experience, they’d have to be insane.
The fact that George Stacy hadn’t issued a wanted notice for Spider-Man was already the greatest restraint he could manage.
Thus, the police surrounding the two masked figures engaged in a melee were raising their guns and ordering both sides to surrender.
But the Green Goblin’s equipment had been developed by Osborn Industries for a military project.
How could there possibly be only pumpkin bombs?
The machine guns mounted on the flying glider immediately opened fire, sending the police scrambling for their lives.
If Spider-Man hadn’t intervened, the Green Goblin might well have killed every officer who tried to arrest him.
Seeing someone go down, Henry immediately said, "Skye, take care of Kate. Don’t run around. I’m going to help those officers who fell."
With that, he ran out.
The girl didn’t possess any particular desire to perform good deeds every day, but she did love watching a spectacle.
The old lady lacked the physical ability to go help people, but she could certainly encourage someone else to do it.
With that one sentence, Henry had effectively arranged for the old woman and the girl to keep an eye on each other.
Besides, with Catherine Hepburn around, Henry probably wasn’t going to get a front-row seat to the action anyway.
He might as well go save people.
And it was better to avoid directly confronting the Green Goblin. No point making himself conspicuous in front of that man.
That lunatic clearly had no bottom line.
Before the machine guns could sweep across their position, Henry stepped in front of a group of police officers and took the heavy-caliber rounds from the flying glider head-on with his body.
If those bullets struck an ordinary person directly, death or permanent disability would be almost guaranteed.
Judging from the injuries of the officer lying on the ground, however, he hadn’t been hit directly by a machine-gun round. He had probably suffered a graze, or been struck by fragments of pavement or a shattered bullet after the rounds hit the ground.
Although his leg hadn’t been directly blown apart, he had still lost the ability to move. He couldn’t escape on his own.
Another female officer tried to drag her injured colleague to safety.
Unfortunately, she wasn’t fast enough.
The Green Goblin hadn’t deliberately turned around to finish them off, but they were still caught inside the combat zone between Spider-Man and the Green Goblin.
They had simply been caught in the crossfire.
If Henry hadn’t stepped out to block the bullets, the two officers would have been dead.
