Chapter 83: Lost Identity
Chapter 83: Chapter 83: Lost Identity
"Daniel?"
Carol stared at the familiar face before her, and without even thinking, she softly spoke his name. She had seen this face countless times in her dreams.
"If it’s not me, then who else would it be?" Daniel replied with a grin.
After six long years, he was finally standing in front of Carol again, and the joy he felt at this moment was almost impossible to hide.
"Come on, I’ll take you somewhere nice to eat."
"And while we’re at it, I’ll introduce you to my girlfriend. I can guarantee you’ll never guess who she is!"
"We’ll head to New York. I bought a house there." He paused for a moment before adding, "Oh, and one more thing... I’m rich now."
Laughing, Daniel reached out to take Carol with him, completely ignoring the two people standing nearby.
Nick Fury.
Phil Coulson.
Daniel recognized both of them immediately, but right now, he had no interest in talking to either of them, as compared to Carol, these two weren’t even worth a second glance.
Carol instinctively stepped back, avoiding his hand.
"Wait."
She looked at him seriously.
"Who are you?"
"And... What exactly is our relationship?"
Daniel blinked in confusion.
"I’m your brother!"
He laughed as if she’d just told the world’s funniest joke.
"Seriously? You spend six years in space, come back, and you’ve already forgotten me?"
He still hadn’t realized Carol had lost her memories. To him, she was simply teasing him.
"Now, enough joking around."
"Let’s go."
"I can’t wait for you to meet my girlfriend; you’ll be completely shocked."
"Oh, right."
He suddenly thought of something.
"Did you find yourself a boyfriend during these six years?"
"And please don’t tell me he’s some ugly alien that looks like a monster."
The words poured out one after another, as there was simply too much, he wanted to tell her after six years apart. Carol just quietly shook her head.
"I’m sorry."
"I don’t understand what you’re talking about."
"I... can’t remember my past."
Daniel’s smile slowly disappeared.
"You lost your memory?"
He stared at her.
"...You’re not joking?"
"No," Carol answered with complete seriousness.
Seeing that she wasn’t pretending, the smile on Daniel’s face vanished completely, his expression became grim, then frustration slowly began to appear in his eyes.
"How could you lose your memory?"
He found it almost impossible to believe.
’Was this what the Ancient One meant...?’
’She said Carol’s future would become better.’
’This... is better?’
Daniel’s frustration surfaced. He suddenly felt as though the Ancient One had tricked him, so taking a deep breath to calm himself, he asked.
"Can you tell me everything that happened during these last six years?"
For reasons she couldn’t explain, Carol instinctively trusted the man standing before her, and she had just opened her mouth to answer when...
"Excuse me."
Nick interrupted them.
"Sorry for interrupting your conversation. But this lady literally fell from the sky and destroyed a video rental store, so we need to take her in for questioning."
As he spoke, Fury pulled out his identification and showed it to Daniel.
"We’re with the Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and Logistics Division."
"And we’d appreciate your cooperation."
Daniel didn’t even bother looking at the badge.
"Just go away."
His voice was filled with irritation as he was already in a terrible mood.
"We have the authority..."
Before Fury could finish speaking, Daniel cut him off.
"No one on Earth has ever had the authority to make me cooperate with an investigation."
"I don’t care what security agency you belong to. I’m busy right now."
Then, after a brief pause, he added, "If I were you, I’d call your director before making another decision."
"Tell your director..."
"My name is Daniel Danvers."
Over the past six years, Daniel had never bothered hiding his abilities.
If satellites wanted to monitor him, then let them. As long as they weren’t watching him around the clock, he couldn’t care less.
In fact, it wasn’t a bad thing for the governments of Earth to know exactly how powerful he was. That way, fewer idiots would come looking for trouble, so it saved everyone a lot of unnecessary headaches.
By now, every major government on Earth knew one simple fact. There was someone on this planet they absolutely could not afford to provoke.
Without saying it outright, both sides had developed an unspoken understanding. You don’t mess with me, and I won’t mess with you.
Perhaps because Daniel’s arrival had been so overwhelming, Fury didn’t argue any further, instead, he took out his phone and called his director. The phone in his hand was one of Future Technology’s newest-generation smartphones.
Just as Daniel had said, he was very rich these days.
Once the call connected, Fury briefly explained the situation before mentioning Daniel’s name, and the director gave a simple reply.
"I understand it, now you don’t need to get involved anymore."
"The mission is over."
The line went dead.
Fury lowered the phone slowly, as disappointment filled his heart. He had an instinctive feeling that he was standing on the threshold of another world.
A hidden world that ordinary people knew nothing about, yet his superior had ordered him to walk away. Still unwilling to leave, Fury returned to his car and quietly watched Daniel and Carol from a distance.
...
"Now that no one’s interrupting us..." Daniel turned back towards Carol. "Tell me everything that happened during these past six years."
Carol obediently recounted everything she had experienced since leaving Earth. Daniel listened quietly from beginning to end.
"So..."
"They call you Vers now, and you’ve become a Kree?" He asked after she finished.
Carol frowned.
"I was always a Kree."
She answered as though it were the most natural thing in the world.
"Bullshit!"
Daniel exploded.
"Every bit of that is bullshit!"
"You’re my biological sister! And your powers weren’t some gift from the damned Kree Empire!"
"I was the one who took you to Wakanda to freeload!"
Rage surged through Daniel, and at that moment, all he wanted was to fly straight to Hala. He wanted to smash that so-called Supreme Intelligence into pieces with his own hands.
In fact, for one terrifying moment, he even wanted to wipe the entire Kree Empire out of existence, but the last shred of his rationality held him back, because destroying an entire civilization over this... was a line he refused to cross.
Daniel placed both hands gently on Carol’s shoulders. Looking directly into her eyes, he spoke slowly.
"Listen to me, your name is Carol Danvers, and you’re a human from Earth, not some damn Kree"
"Your family is still alive, and so are your friends. You haven’t lost anyone, so everything they told you about your past was a lie."
Daniel tried his hardest to suppress the fury burning inside him, and his voice remained as gentle as he could make it.
Carol lowered her head.
"I... don’t know whether what you’re saying is true, but my head hurts like hell, it feels like..." she pressed a hand against her temple "...there’s someone inside me telling me you’re right."
"But..." she hesitated. "The last six years, and the Supreme Intelligence..."
Unable to continue, she buried her face in her hands, clutching her head.
"My head, it feels like it’s going to explode."
Seeing her like this made Daniel’s heart ache, as ever since they were children no one had ever hurt Carol.
Well, other than himself.
Although, every time Daniel had ever hurt her, it was because Carol insisted on challenging him and getting beaten fair and square, so she had brought that on herself. But this... this was different.
"Kree..."
"Supreme Intelligence..."
Daniel repeated those words quietly.
He made a silent vow. Once Carol recovered, he would personally go to Hala, and he would beat the Supreme Intelligence into scrap.
How dare it brainwash his sister, then another person came to mind.
The Ancient One.
Right now, Daniel wanted nothing more than to fly to Kamar-Taj and tear the whole place apart. That woman had lied to him; she claimed Carol’s future would become better.
But looking at Carol now, he couldn’t see a single thing that had improved.
"Don’t force yourself."
Daniel gently comforted her.
"We’ll take this one step at a time."
Carol seemed to grasp at the first excuse that came to mind.
"I still have a mission."
"The Skrulls and Yon-Rogg will be here soon."
Daniel’s eyes narrowed dangerously.
"Good." His voice was frighteningly cold.
"When he gets here..."
"You’ll finally learn the truth."
He had already made up his mind, the moment Yon-Rogg arrived, he’d beat him until he was half dead. Then he’d make him confess everything.
Carol instinctively warned him.
"He’ll bring an elite strike team, and he can call in the Accuser warships at any time. Those ships have enough firepower to destroy an entire planet."
Daniel smiled, but it wasn’t a warm smile.
"Don’t worry. Even if the Kree Empire brings every last bit of military strength they have, they’ll all come here... and none of them will be going back."
His eyes turned cold.
"I’ll make them understand... the price of hurting my sister."
"They’re going to regret it."
