Chapter 84: Chapter 84: Carol’s Awakening (bonus)
"When will Yon-Rogg’s ship get here?" Daniel asked.
Right now, he was barely holding himself back from beating someone senseless. According to what Carol had told him, Kree physiology was exceptionally tough.
Daniel had already decided that when Yon-Rogg arrived, he’d grab him by the leg, smash him into the ground a few dozen times.
Then he’d start asking questions.
’You bastard, you’re supposed to be some elite warrior, aren’t you?’
’I won’t kill you... I’ll just cripple you and make sure you spend the rest of your life in a wheelchair.’
"It’ll probably be another day," Carol answered honestly.
"Let’s find a cafe first. I want you to tell me everything in detail."
Earlier, she’d only given him a brief summary of the past six years, but there were still countless things he didn’t know. After all, Daniel was an unapologetic sis-con.
Standing in the middle of the street dressed like this attracted far too much attention. His golden white suit and Carol’s Kree combat suit practically screamed for people to stare.
A private place would be much better. Besides, he was rich now, so renting out an entire cafe for a while would cost him next to nothing.
"Okay," Carol nodded without hesitation, as she also had plenty of questions she wanted to ask Daniel.
As for chasing the Skrulls, that had long since been pushed to the back of her mind.
For the first time in six years, she finally had a chance to uncover the blank portion of her past, and she wasn’t going to let that opportunity slip away.
And from the moment she’d seen Daniel today, she had trusted him instinctively.
...
The two were on their way to a nearby cafe when a woman suddenly appeared on the rooftop of a nearby building.
She raised a strange-looking weapon and fired at them. With their reflexes, neither Daniel nor Carol was ever going to get hit, so both casually dodged the blast.
"Skrull."
Carol immediately recognized the attacker, and the moment she spoke, she took off to chase after her.
Daniel was even faster, returning before Carol had barely taken two steps.
Dangling from one hand was a green-skinned Skrull who had already reverted to their true form. Seeing that Carol pouted in dissatisfaction.
"He was mine."
"You were too slow."
Daniel shrugged.
"It’s been years, and you’re still just as weak."
Despite Carol’s amnesia, the two naturally slipped back into the way they’d always interacted growing up. Some habits simply couldn’t be erased by forgotten memories.
"I just wasn’t ready!" Carol stubbornly argued.
"Oh really?" Daniel said with a smirk.
"A weakling is still a weakling."
"You actually thought spending a few years in space meant you could finally beat me?"
"Keep on dreaming."
The familiar bickering instantly returned, and oddly enough, it improved Daniel’s mood.
"You..."
Carol wanted to refute him, but the evidence was literally hanging from Daniel’s hand, after holding it in for a moment, she finally huffed.
"Just wait. One day I’ll hit you so hard that you’ll end up flying straight into the sun."
The words had barely left her mouth before she froze, as for some reason, that sentence felt incredibly familiar. It was almost as though, she’d said those exact words to him countless times before.
Daniel chuckled.
"Heh."
"Weakling."
"Even if you spent another thousand years wandering the universe, you still wouldn’t be able to break through my defenses."
It had been far too long since he’d gotten to tease Carol like this, so naturally, he showed absolutely no mercy.
"You just wait!"
Carol threw out one last threat before falling silent, right now she’d taken a serious blow to her pride.
She was strong, after all, wasn’t she?
On Hala, she’d never lost a one on one fight. Well, except for Ronan, whom she had never faced in battle, every elite Kree warrior she had ever fought had lost to her.
"Mhm... I’ll be waiting."
Daniel wore an unbearably smug expression, and Carol seriously considered blasting him in the face with an energy beam.
"Come on, let’s go to the cafe."
Daniel casually picked up the unconscious Skrull again and started moving forward, with Carol following close behind.
...
Fortunately, it was still early in the morning. When they arrived at the cafe, Daniel simply tossed his bank card onto the counter and rented out the entire place. The owner nearly had a heart attack.
Over the past several years, plenty of ordinary people had witnessed Daniel using his powers. Yet somehow no news about him had ever spread, because someone was clearly cleaning up the aftermath behind the scenes.
By now, Daniel had become very accustomed to the process.
After they sat down, the trembling cafe owner personally served them two cups of coffee before quickly retreating as far away as possible.
Taking a sip, Daniel asked, "So, tell me about the Skrulls."
Carol had only just begun speaking, "The Skrulls are..."
Before she could finish her sentence, a circular portal filled with golden sparks suddenly opened beside their table, and a graceful figure stepped out.
The Ancient One.
She smiled gently.
"It’s been a long time, Daniel."
Daniel looked at her with visible annoyance.
"You actually have the nerve to show up?"
"I was just thinking about paying Kamar-Taj a visit."
The Ancient One smiled knowingly.
"Oh? And were you planning to smash my Sanctum?"
’Exactly.’
Daniel answered in his heart. Out loud, however he didn’t, at least not yet, because he still wasn’t confident enough to fight the Ancient One directly.
Although he could feel it. Once he completed his next breakthrough, he wouldn’t have to fear this woman anymore. When that day came, he was definitely going to do a few things.
’You lied to me.’ Daniel scoffed.
"So, this is what you meant when you said Carol would become much better? I would’ve been better off if you’d just told me where she was six years ago so, I could’ve gone after her myself."
"Just look at her."
"She’s barely gotten any stronger... and she’s even dumber than before."
Daniel pointed accusingly at Carol.
Carol’s forehead immediately filled with black lines, as she shot him an annoyed glare.
’Who’s dumb?!’
The Ancient One merely smiled.
"Not necessarily."
There was a teasing note in her voice.
"I told you before. I’ve been looking forward to the day you two met again and that’s why I’m here."
Daniel sighed.
"What’s there to look forward to? Carol can’t remember a single thing from her past, and I’m already getting a headache trying to figure this out."
Then he couldn’t resist adding one more jab.
"Imagine someone who’s several hundred years old lying to a child."
In Daniel’s opinion, he still counted as a child. His Kryptonian instincts constantly reminded him that he was still in an immature developmental stage, and only after his next evolution would he truly reach adulthood.
"So..." The Ancient One said with a smile. "I came to solve your problem."
Daniel’s eyes lit up immediately.
"You have a way?"
She looked at him calmly.
"I am a sorcerer... who has practiced for several hundred years."
She deliberately emphasized the last few words.
"Right, right."
"You’re the Sorcerer Supreme and you’re amazing. Now, please hurry up and help Carol recover her memories."
Daniel’s attitude changed so quickly it was almost shameless, but the Ancient One completely ignored his flattery. Her expression remained unchanged as she slowly raised a finger and gently touched Carol’s forehead.
"Carefully recall your past."
The moment the Ancient One’s fingertip made contact, countless fragments of memory flooded into Carol’s mind.
Images flashed before her eyes one after another. After a long while, she slowly opened her eyes, and tears instantly welled up inside them.
"I remember..."
"I remember everything."
"I remembered it all!"
Her voice trembled with excitement.
At last, the blank emptiness that had haunted her memories for six years was gone. The Ancient One simply smiled as she watched.
It took several moments before Carol finally calmed herself.
"Thank you..."
"It was my responsibility," the Ancient One said with a gentle smile.
"Six years ago, I made someone a promise. I told him that when his sister returned, she would become someone truly extraordinary, and I’m simply here to fulfill that promise."
Daniel folded his arms.
"I still don’t see what’s so extraordinary."
He muttered unhappily from the side, but the Ancient One ignored him completely, instead, she looked toward Carol.
"Close your eyes and carefully feel the power inside your body. It is far more than what it appears to be."
Hearing that, Carol obediently closed her eyes. Gradually, orange-golden light began radiating from her body. Daniel rubbed his chin.
"It looks impressive."
"No idea if it’s actually useful, though."
The Ancient One continued.
"Go deeper."
"Explore your power. You can become even stronger, much stronger."
"Just have faith in yourself."
"Arghhh!"
Carol suddenly cried out, her golden hair stood on end. She then opened her eyes and brilliant white light shone from within them.
Her body slowly rose into the air.
"Whoa..."
Daniel blinked, caught off guard, while the Ancient One gave a simple nod.
"Continue."
The radiance surrounding Carol grew brighter and brighter, and soon, it became impossible for ordinary people to look directly at her.
After another moment, Carol slowly opened her glowing eyes and turned toward Daniel. A confident smile gradually spread across her face.
"Come on, fight me."
Before Daniel could answer, she shot towards him like a comet.
The two of them burst through the cafe in an instant, and a split second later, they had already disappeared into outer space.
Watching the siblings vanish into the distance, the Ancient One smiled to herself.
"I told you... I’ve been looking forward to the day you two met again."
