Maskbound: The Ultimate Hunter

Chapter 43 Vaska Smells the Lie

The woman on the depot roof descended by the rear ladder after Ione left, carrying a black perforated censer against one hip.

Bastien found her testing the service-lane stain with folded paper rather than entering through either unlocked door.

'A cleaner who asks chemicals before people... better manners than most investigators,' Ossian stopped beyond her reach, 'give her room.'

She introduced herself as Vaska, contamination cleaner, licensed for biological denial zones and privately contracted disposal work.

"Your trail contains blood from one person carrying three territorial signals, an impossible condition after death," she said.

Ione had not disclosed blood, death, or multiple signals when showing Vaska's municipal collection order during the warrant search.

Paloma requested identification, insurance, plus a written price before allowing one more word to become billable analysis.

Vaska presented every document in alphabetical order, including a rate sheet laminated against solvents and hostile digestive fluid.

'Prepared for acid before conversation... damn, I like her paperwork,' Ossian read the total, 'ask whether truth costs extra.'

Her base examination cost nine hundred credits, with another four hundred for tracking any route beyond municipal property.

Paloma negotiated both services to eleven hundred after offering the depot's decontamination bay instead of Vaska's mobile laboratory.

The guild account fell from 161,600 credits to 160,500 after Vaska's contracted analysis and municipal tracking charge.

"Payment cleared, meaning you may now frighten us in a professionally itemised manner," Paloma said.

Vaska rolled the stained paper between gloved fingers, exposing three colour bands under a narrow ultraviolet lamp.

One signal belonged to ordinary human blood, another mimicked a territorial scavenger, plus the third resembled flowering carrion tissue.

"No single donor can produce all three without grafting, though counterfeit material might imitate them without living residue," Maelle said.

Vaska placed a prepared salt beneath the paper, making only the human band crystallise around its edges.

"All three are alive enough to argue over ownership, making imitation the lie inside this sample," she said.

'Three living claims inside one drop... Solenne did not build a face, she stacked appetites,' Ossian touched Jackal, 'show us direction.'

Vaska opened her censer, revealing separate chambers filled with oils, mineral salts, dried spores, plus sealed strips of reactive bark.

Each chamber carried a date, hazard class, antidote code, plus a coloured notch Vaska could recognise through smoke.

Calista asked whether the compounds were masked abilities, earning the first visible irritation beneath Vaska's disciplined expression.

"Prepared chemistry is not magic, since spores grow, salts react, oils carry signals, while careless people confuse results with miracles," Vaska said.

'No mystery accepted where a label fits... Maelle found competition for the depot shelves,' Ossian studied the censer, 'ask about the flail chain.'

Vaska detached the handle, revealing a reinforced cord that let the perforated shell swing without mixing sealed chambers.

She could spread compounds through a wider space, strike contaminated objects from distance, or close every aperture with one twist.

"Nothing leaves this tool without my choice, while mineral foam seals the contents if its shell breaks," she said.

Ione inspected the safety stamps, finding municipal approval for plague sites, hostile fungi, plus chemically altered animal territories.

Paloma added equipment replacement to Vaska's rescue terms, preventing the contractor from burying a destroyed censer inside later expenses.

She burned nothing, using the perforated shell to mix trace vapours while keeping every reagent physically apart.

The resulting cloud stayed close to the floor, following the blood trail across two corners before dividing around a storm drain.

Calista filmed each turn while Bastien marked the pavement with removable chalk arrows behind them.

Ione returned alone, having recognised Vaska's name on the municipal contractor registry attached to the false collection order.

"That order used your licence number, but do you know the worker who carried it?" Ione asked.

Vaska studied the copied signature, identifying her own name written by someone who had only seen block letters.

"No competent cleaner copies another contractor's route, since we inherit liability with every borrowed stain," she said.

'Offended by technique, not identity... useful pride points toward whoever understood forms but not the work,' Ossian watched her cloud, 'keep walking.'

The trail entered the storm drain through a cracked grate and emerged two streets east at an abandoned pumping station.

Vaska charged the additional four hundred only after Paloma confirmed the concrete boundary marked the start of municipal property.

Below the station, a maintenance stair descended into tunnels omitted from current city maps but present on the obsolete waste circuit.

Bastien remained above to coordinate exits while Calista, Maelle, Ione, Vaska, plus Ossian entered with sealed respirators.

The first tunnel smelled of wet brick until Vaska released a bitter oil that exposed sweet residue along the eastern wall.

"Someone washed equipment here within eight hours, leaving plant tissue, anaesthetic, plus blood from at least four donors," she said.

'Four donors after one stain... hell, living subjects moved before dawn,' Ossian opened Furnace against the cold, 'find wheel marks.'

Maelle located narrow grooves in mineral buildup, spaced for clinic beds rather than municipal refuse drums.

Calista found handprints at mattress height where somebody had reached past a rail during transport.

Ione photographed each print before following the grooves toward a junction divided into three drainage channels.

Vaska closed her censer and crouched over residue inside every channel without letting her coat touch the floor.

"Two routes are false after somebody seeded animal blood downstream to divide pursuit," she said.

Ossian used Jackal on the nearest channel, finding fear, medicine, plus the same sweet trace carried from the depot lane.

His mask preferred the strongest fear, pulling attention toward the left channel where Vaska had marked a decoy.

'Jackal hunts panic, not truth... shit, Solenne baited the easiest instinct,' Ossian closed it, 'trust the cleaner.'

Vaska selected the central channel after testing its wall above flood height, where diluted residue had escaped deliberate washing.

Ione followed without demanding proof twice, a small decision Calista noticed through the camera lens.

The central passage narrowed around discarded surgical wraps stamped with three different clinic grant numbers.

Paloma checked those numbers over comms, finding all three connected to Solenne's procurement company through dormant bank accounts.

"Money reaches this tunnel through separate doors, while every account ends at the same perfume wholesaler," Paloma said.

Vaska stopped beside a square patch of clean brick, holding her censer near mortar without releasing any compound.

Warm air crossed its perforations from behind the wall, carrying antiseptic, crushed flowers, plus human breath.

'Patients behind municipal brick... no alarms, no visible hinge,' Ossian shifted Ironback left, 'Maelle, find the load.'

Maelle pressed four points around the square, identifying a counterweighted panel designed to open under balanced force.

Vaska placed one prepared oil against the upper seam, letting its blue edge reveal a thumbprint beside the hidden latch.

The waiting system wrote three warnings across Ossian's vision before anyone touched that print.

[Biological sources beyond the barrier: 17]

[Territorial signal conflict remains active]

[Hostile material is moving east]

'Seventeen sources, beds moved hours ago... they did not abandon the route,' Ossian listened beyond the wall, 'they are moving deeper.'

A trolley wheel squealed once behind the hidden panel, followed by restrained breathing from more than one throat.

Vaska lifted her censer-flail from its belt loop, prepared compounds settling into separate chambers without a rattle.

"My tracking fee ends here, while rescue work requires a separate contract," she said.

Paloma answered through comms before Ione could object while Vaska wrote a revised figure across the bottom of her contract form, "Send the number while we open the wall."
