Maskbound: The Ultimate Hunter

Chapter 44 Corpse with Three Scents

  • Next Chapter

Maelle opened the counterweighted panel while Ossian held Ironback beneath it, revealing a service chamber lit by abandoned surgical lamps.

One body lay strapped to a transport trolley, covered from the chin downward by a stained municipal sheet.

'Seventeen signals beyond the wall, one body left as a lock... no, as bait,' Ossian kept Vaska behind him, 'check the air first.'

Vaska released a narrow mineral cloud through her censer, watching it divide into three colours above the trolley.

Human blood produced violet, scavenger territory burned amber, plus flowering carrion tissue spread a deep green band.

"The donor died less than two hours ago, yet all three signals remain active inside the corpse," Vaska said.

Ione searched the service chamber for patients while Calista filmed the restraints, lamps, plus wheel tracks continuing east.

The dead wearer had no attached mask, yet six empty fastening holes circled the skin above its sternum.

Maelle found removed anchor sutures inside those wounds and different adhesive residues along both sides of the jaw.

'Multiple faces tested on one body... hell, every failure left a territorial claim,' Ossian opened Jackal, 'do not follow fear.'

The amber signal surged through the passage when Jackal appeared, reaching beyond the hidden wall like a territorial challenge.

Something answered from the flooded left channel with claws scraping concrete below the waterline.

Vaska shut the amber reaction under mineral foam, yet a second answer came through a ceiling vent above Calista.

Ossian pulled her aside before a pale scavenger dropped onto the trolley, biting through the dead wearer's shoulder.

Its body resembled a hairless dog until the jaw opened across two hinged seams meant for a larger skull.

Ione drove a Directorate baton beneath its throat, pinning the creature without striking the corpse under it.

'Not a monster built to kill... a scavenger taught where discarded material waits,' Ossian stored its impact, 'throw it right.'

Ironback released the captured force sideways, sending the animal into a bank of empty surgical cabinets.

Three more scavengers entered through the ceiling vent, each following a different signal rising from the same body.

The first chased amber territory toward Jackal, while another followed green carrion residue directly at Maelle's evidence case.

A smaller creature ignored both signals and lunged for the corpse's mouth, seeking human tissue.

'Three scents divide three appetites... the body is a feeding schedule written in blood,' Ossian caught the first jaw, 'Vaska, erase green.'

Vaska selected one chamber by touch, opening two perforations before swinging the censer beneath the approaching creature.

A colourless spore cloud coated its nostrils, replacing the Carrion Orchid signal with the mineral scent of empty stone.

The confused animal struck a wall, scraping brick where its stolen senses insisted food remained.

Ione trapped the smaller scavenger beneath the municipal sheet, using its own momentum to wrap every hinged jaw.

"Alive specimens prove route conditioning, while killing them would exchange evidence for convenience," she said.

'An investigator protecting monsters for the right reason... strange sentence, useful result,' Ossian redirected another strike, 'Calista, take the vent cable.'

Calista looped severed copper around the sheet bundle with her right hand, pinning the creature without trusting numb fingers near its teeth.

Ossian drove stored force through the trolley wheel instead of the attacking bodies, tilting their feeding platform toward the sealed wall.

Calista cut the lamp cables with her good hand, dropping one fixture across the vent while keeping her numb left fingers clear.

Maelle overturned the trolley against the wall, hiding the corpse from the creatures without breaking its restraint seals.

Vaska swung her censer-flail once, spreading bitter oil through the chamber in a controlled ring.

The scavengers lost every territorial scent at once, snapping toward blank air while Ione drove them back through the panel.

"My compounds deny targets rather than sedating animals, with an effect lasting forty seconds in moving air," Vaska said.

'Forty seconds bought with chemistry... enough if nobody wastes them admiring it,' Ossian shifted Furnace forward, 'seal the vent.'

Maelle heated the cut lamp frame while Ossian bent it across the opening under Ironback pressure.

Calista counted the remaining seconds, warning them at twelve before Vaska's bitter ring began losing density.

The last scavenger reached through the narrowing gap, exposing a tag stapled beneath its jaw.

Ione tore the tag free before the frame sealed, finding the same perfume wholesaler named in Paloma's account search.

"They marked animals as waste carriers, giving every tag its own return route," she said.

The printed route ended at a legitimate perfume shop three streets above the eastern drainage line.

Vaska examined the corpse after sealing her glove seams, locating thin punctures through the eyes, tongue, plus inner ears.

"Someone harvested sensory tissue before death, though the territorial grafts kept producing after the person stopped," she said.

'A body reduced to signals that outlive its name... damn, Solenne calls this correction too,' Ossian closed Jackal, 'find an identity.'

Ione recovered a hospital bracelet beneath the trolley pad, its patient number scraped away while the emergency contact remained readable.

She covered that name before Calista's camera crossed it, preserving one private boundary inside the evidence record.

Ossian noticed, making no comment that could turn decent instinct into performance.

The larval core clicked inside Maelle's sealed transport case when they approached the eastern wall.

Its pale fragment pressed toward a ventilation grille hidden behind shelves of expired antiseptic.

Maelle compared the movement with Doran's retained filament response, finding a slower rhythm around the core's lower seam.

"This trace cannot belong to the larval structure, meaning something nested against it before preservation," she said.

Vaska sampled the grille dust, exposing dry black residue that absorbed every oil except one memory-reactive compound.

That compound revealed featherlike branches too fine for Carrion Orchid tissue or Veil Court's surgical filament.

'A second creature touched the core before Ruan carried it away... Raven residue marking air nobody sees,' Ossian followed the branches, 'trace the ventilation.'

The system recognised the contamination without granting ownership or a complete face.

[Unowned mask residue identified as Hollow Raven]

[Functional trace: route memory]

[Owned faces: 4]

Vaska marked the residue jar separately, preventing Ione from cataloguing Hollow Raven as part of the larval core or Carrion Orchid inside any later report.

When Ossian spoke the perfume shop's address, residue on the grille rearranged into a narrow line pointing upward.

The larval fragment copied that direction through the glass, identifying a ventilation route separate from the patient trolley grooves.

Ione marked both paths, assigning the moving subjects to herself while asking Ossian to follow the unseen air route.

"You are finally asking us for help instead of ordering compliance," Calista said.

"Orders require confidence I have not earned here," Ione replied.

'Fair answer under bad lamps... shit, take it before pride invents a problem,' Ossian lifted the core case, 'we follow air.'

The corpse moved behind them with no breath, pulse, or change in the three chemical bands.

Black surgical thread rose from its fastening holes, pulling shoulders upright against the trolley restraints.

Maelle cut the nearest strand, yet two more emerged through the dead wearer's ribs and anchored into ceiling cracks.

The chest opened along an old surgical seam, exposing layered plant tissue packed where lungs should have remained.

A dark flower pushed between the ribs, each petal lined with teeth designed to strip material from failed masks.

Vaska's green signal flooded the chamber as the system named the thing feeding inside the body.

[Carrion Orchid is active]

[Compatibility scan blocked by host death]

[Predation target: masked material]

'It waited inside the bait while scavengers cleared witnesses... not waste, not corpse, a hunting garden,' Ossian opened Dreadweight, 'cut every thread.'

The Orchid tore the trolley restraints apart and turned its dead host toward the ventilation route leading to the perfume shop.
