Maskbound: The Ultimate Hunter

Chapter 47 Known Quantity

Solenne's notebook remained open beneath Ione's camera while the perfume-shop patients left through three separate medical transports.

The unfinished Human Mask occupied both pages, measured at the jaw, eyes, plus the scar Ossian had not received six years earlier.

'A future scar drawn before the blade existed... no, look at the date again,' Ossian touched the paper, 'make somebody prove the ink.'

Maelle had already tested every physical component before Ossian entered, finding the ink, leather, plus thread at least five years older than the opening Gate.

Ossian remembered her saying that before she spoke, complete with the movement of her mouth and a stain absent from her sleeve.

Then Maelle gave the result in different words, making the first memory collapse under the real one.

'I heard an answer that never happened... damn, forty-five is not only appetite,' Ossian closed his hand, 'write the false memory down.'

Calista moved the notebook away from him without hiding it, leaving the dated sketch visible beyond her wrist.

"Tell me which part frightens you before we let another investigator decide for us," she said.

"It makes this face feel borrowed, since Solenne knew its measurements before the system called it mine," Ossian replied.

He expected Calista to answer with choice, identity, or some clean sentence about becoming more than design.

Instead, she took his two stiff fingers and bent them until the old Mantis scar pulled against both joints.

"You forget to warm these before work, count doors when anxious, plus lie badly about your mother, and nobody designed those habits," she said.

'Her hand lacks cold, mine cannot close cleanly... ordinary damage as proof of ownership,' Ossian let her hold it, 'keep this memory accurate.'

Vaska ended the moment by placing three sealed trays across the surgical table and requesting payment for contamination review.

Paloma approved four thousand eight hundred credits covering laboratory use, medical witnesses, disposal, plus one replacement censer chamber.

The account fell from 157,300 to 152,500, leaving every expense attached to Vaska rather than disguised as guild recruitment.

Three prepared trays held discarded Orchid root, harmless donor blood, plus Vaska's controlled decay compounds under separate seals.

Vaska's agreement required quarterly contamination review, an outside physician, plus written authority to refuse every deployment without losing aftercare.

Paloma removed one clause permitting the Directorate to retain samples from Vaska after death, calling it posthumous theft disguised as monitoring.

Ione replaced retention with witnessed destruction, accepting that useful evidence did not automatically outweigh a dead person's stated boundary.

'A contract written around someone who may walk away... separate from Court language, different on purpose,' Ossian read each correction, 'keep the exits visible.'

Vaska added that The Unmasked held no claim over compounds she developed through Orchid, even when guild facilities funded their preparation.

Maelle approved that distinction after securing reciprocal ownership for equipment she built to contain those compounds.

"You negotiated intellectual property during a surgical review, making that the healthiest thing anyone did downstairs," Calista said.

Paloma charged twelve credits for printing the final copy, then waived them after Vaska produced her own paper from a sealed sleeve.

Nobody called the waiver kindness, allowing Paloma to preserve dignity while Calista concealed the beginning of a smile.

"A ninety-one percent match does not answer whether the appetite respects exclusions after transfer," Vaska said.

Ione assigned two clinicians to observe, although Vaska required both to sign that Directorate presence granted no authority over her body.

Ossian opened Carrion Orchid across his perception, finding green food signals in root, blood, plus six compounds meant to imitate decay.

The mask preferred donor blood until he named it living, redirecting its attention toward dead root without resistance.

'It learned my boundary, not hers... shit, transfer may return the hunger to its first answer,' Ossian faced Vaska, 'state every exclusion.'

Vaska named living humans, viable tissue, medical grafts, protected remains, evidence, plus any biological source lacking documented release.

Orchid closed one petal after each category, reducing its available field until only discarded root and prepared compounds remained.

"It recognises the words through you, but that does not prove it will recognise them through Vaska," Ione said.

Vaska agreed, adding an immediate-removal clause if her first perception classified either clinician as material.

The system displayed three irreversible terms while refusing to call any of them informed consent.

[Compatible retainer identified at 91%]

[One permanent awakening remains available to Vaska]

[Transfer requires ten uninterrupted seconds]

'Retainer, territory, useful body... hell, it still translates choice into possession,' Ossian offered his left hand, 'Vaska keeps evolution control.'

She corrected him before touching it, "I keep every form of control, while your system may record whatever fiction helps it function."

Carrion Orchid left Ossian's collection over exactly ten seconds, each petalled layer withdrawing from his senses before appearing beneath Vaska's skin.

The first second removed every scent of dead grafts from Ossian's perception, while the fifth made ordinary blood completely invisible to him again.

At ten, a dark flower opened across Vaska's left shoulder, its roots forming clean lines around rather than through her major vessels.

She looked first at the clinicians, then the donor tray, plus finally the discarded root.

"People are warm boundaries, waste has direction, and evidence carries another person's claim," she said.

Only the root appeared as food, proving her exclusions survived without Ossian translating them through his own mastery.

Vaska tested movement next, walking between both clinicians while one carried living blood and the other held discarded root.

The flower followed the released material through three turns without once opening toward either breathing body.

She reversed both carriers, changed their coats, plus flooded the room with masking oil before repeating the path.

Orchid found the root through every disguise, establishing a scent corridor that belonged to biological status rather than appearance.

'A boundary surviving confusion... better proof than obedience under clean conditions,' Ossian watched Vaska mark the result, 'let her choose now.'

[Carrion Orchid transferred permanently]

[Owned faces remaining: 4]

[Fracture: 46%]

'Four faces, another person carrying what used to answer me... loss should feel worse,' Ossian watched Vaska close the flower, 'that absence feels organised.'

The post-transfer review ended when the Directorate sealed every entrance and a segmented staff unfolded across the lift threshold.

Tavet Rusk entered behind it, wearing no visible mask and carrying a classification order signed above Ione's authority.

Ione read the first page before objecting, "The clinic remains an active rescue site under my command."

"Your discretion produced an unregistered permanent transformation during an open irregular-threat investigation," Tavet replied.

He did not threaten Vaska, touch the notebook, or call Ossian a monster, making his restraint harder to dismiss than aggression.

'An honest evaluator enters after the choice, not before... inconvenient timing without a lie to attack,' Ossian closed Dreadweight, 'ask his price.'

Tavet requested no fee from the guild before asking Vaska to reproduce one new perception without using information Ossian had already supplied.

She opened Orchid toward the sealed lift and found a scent corridor where Solenne's discarded joints had crossed runoff below the drain.

The corridor turned twice beneath solid concrete, proving her new sense could distinguish harvested tissue from the living woman who carried it.

Tavet recorded the result, then watched Ossian move Carrion Jackal toward Dreadweight without completing the transfer.

"Your masks require exclusive occupancy during transition, with an interval remaining ten seconds regardless of practice," he said.

Ossian stopped before Jackal left storage, unwilling to expose another rule merely to test whether Tavet had guessed.

"You also divide Dreadweight by function rather than material, leaving one hand to pursue while the other receives," Tavet continued.

'Two rules from one aborted movement plus old footage... damn, corruption would be easier,' Ossian met his eyes, 'what happens tomorrow?'

Tavet scheduled a live classification for eight the next morning, placing Gate access, Variable Profile status, plus Dreadweight registration under review.

"I will suspend every ability I can define," he said, folding Caliper into one straight staff, "Bring whatever remains after definition."
