Maskbound: The Ultimate Hunter
Chapter 48 Three Rules and a Lock
Evaluation hall four opened at eight with Dreadweight empty, four owned faces sealed, plus Tavet waiting inside a measured square.
Ossian needed one clean classification to preserve Gate access, although the board had assigned three observers prepared to suspend it.
'A legal room, honest opponent, consequences already seated... no villain to expose, only skill to prove,' Ossian entered the square, 'start smaller than power.'
Paloma paid two thousand five hundred credits for representation, evidence filing, plus an independent medical observer.
The account moved from 152,500 to 150,000 before Tavet unfolded Caliper into three measuring arms around the floor.
Calista stood outside the boundary with Vaska, Maelle, Ione, plus the clinic registrar Tavet had summoned under preservation order.
"The evaluation measures registered combat function rather than moral character, meaning victory cannot clear you while defeat cannot condemn you," Tavet said.
'A man removing theatre from a public fight... damn, he knows where I usually hide,' Ossian opened Human, 'make the ordinary body useful.'
Tavet required him to declare Dreadweight's starting condition, receiving two empty gauntlets with no stored impact or residual heat.
The waiting system rejected the arrangement before Tavet used any measurable classification ability.
[Rival classifier has entered apex territory]
[Four owned faces remain available]
[Unmeasured human function is considered defective]
'Defective may be the only part Tavet cannot freeze... keep that insult available,' Ossian raised both hands, 'begin without a mask.'
Caliper's first arm struck his right shoulder at ordinary baton speed, giving him enough time to step inside rather than block.
Ossian used a porter's crate entry, turning sideways to make his body narrower while reaching for Tavet's wrist.
Tavet withdrew before contact, recording the angle without claiming it supernatural or assigning an inflated Capability.
Caliper's second measuring arm swept low beneath Ossian, who cleared it before his swollen left leg landed late enough for Tavet to catch the knee.
"Existing injury changes your base movement without providing evidence of any hidden technique," Tavet said.
'He subtracts weakness fairly too... shit, stop waiting for unfairness,' Ossian transferred Jackal toward his right hand, 'show one registered line.'
The ten-second interval exposed both empty hands while Tavet watched rather than attacking an authorised transition.
Jackal settled into Dreadweight Right, sharpening every weak point across Caliper's linked joints.
Ossian committed Grave Rush, reaching Tavet on the fourth step with the hunting fist aimed beside his ribs.
Caliper folded into a square that moved the target backward without presenting an injury for Jackal to follow.
Tavet spoke his first operational rule, "A transferred mask occupies one location exclusively during active use."
Ossian reversed, shifting Ironback toward his left hand while preserving Jackal Right through the next ten seconds.
The evaluator struck Ironback after fitting completed, feeding pressure into the open receiving palm until the left socket filled.
"Both hands maintain separate functions, with the right pursuing selected weakness while the left receives measurable impact," Tavet said.
'Two correct rules, one remaining before the lock... change order, give him a lie,' Ossian started Furnace above Ironback, 'make the known stack fail differently.'
Maelle struck the barrier with her hammer handle, "Wrong order cooks the arm, and proving that again earns no useful result."
Ossian cancelled before transfer completed, accepting her authority rather than sacrificing bone to confuse one evaluator.
Tavet observed the refusal, then stated the third rule without needing a second demonstration.
"Multiple left imprints require an established sequence, with heat conversion placed beneath stored force."
Known Quantity activated through Caliper's three arms, closing a pale geometric frame around both gauntlets.
[Three Dreadweight rules have been correctly stated]
[Current measurable parameter locked for sixty seconds]
[Empty configuration imposed]
Jackal, Ironback, plus the incomplete Furnace transition withdrew from Dreadweight at once, leaving both hands ordinary and numb.
'He locked the vessel, not the faces... hell, wearing one would expose another rule,' Ossian kept Human, 'win something without feeding him.'
Tavet entered with Caliper shortened to baton length, applying pressure rather than waiting for Ossian's next revelation.
Ossian repeated the same narrow crate entry Tavet had measured, finding the staff placed exactly where his shoulder needed space.
The impact turned him, opening his injured leg to a controlled sweep that left him kneeling inside the square.
He caught Caliper under his elbow, trapped one measuring arm against his ribs, plus rolled through the restraint before it closed.
Tavet released the staff instead of losing balance, stepping clear while Ossian rose with the captured arm.
"Prediction revised to include your labour movement and restraint escape under carried load," Tavet said.
'One revision earned inside a loss... not victory, still mine,' Ossian used the arm as a short club, 'make him take it back.'
Tavet caught his wrist, turned the stiff fingers toward the floor, plus stopped the joint lock before damaging the old scar.
Ossian yielded after forty-three seconds, preserving the hand rather than pretending the ordinary body could finish the exchange.
The board posted a legal loss, base close combat below registered Dreadweight output, plus one newly documented restraint escape.
Its medical observer recorded no fresh fracture, although the old leg injury had swollen two centimetres during forty-three seconds of work.
Paloma required that measurement beside the loss, preventing later reviewers from presenting limited movement as cowardice or concealed contamination.
Calista requested the raw footwork footage before Tavet could offer it, marking three entries where Ossian waited for supernatural perception.
'I carried weight before masks existed... somehow power taught the body to ask permission,' Ossian studied her marks, 'remove that habit first.'
Maelle added a separate warning that empty Dreadweight remained five kilograms of fused plating capable of blocking without any imprint.
The board accepted it as equipment protection rather than an ability, preserving one legal use under Tavet's sixty-second lock.
"You may receive ordinary impact through the material, but no storage or supernatural return," Tavet said.
Ossian tested the distinction against a padded arm, stopping the strike through forearm position while every socket remained empty.
The movement bruised him normally, an unimpressive result that still proved the lock had not removed his trained body.
'Pain received normally, protection without spectacle... useful enough to survive the next lesson,' Ossian lowered both arms, 'record the ugly version.'
Tavet placed that result beside the restraint escape, giving Ossian two trainable foundations beneath his unregistered complexity.
Afterward, Tavet restored the gauntlets when sixty seconds ended, having won without cheating, humiliation, or one unnecessary strike.
"Your mystery exceeds trainable fundamentals, while every hidden operational rule remains a public risk," he said.
'A defeat with homework... damn, Ruan never managed anything this irritating,' Ossian accepted the report, 'keep Gate access provisional.'
Before the board answered, Vaska entered the evidence square carrying her scent-corridor results from the perfume clinic.
Her testimony connected living graft waste to the licensed premises through three independently sampled municipal turns.
The clinic registrar called the route contamination until Tavet produced disposal orders carrying that official's own approval code.
Ione requested another private interview before Tavet refused discretion, arrested the registrar under the active warrant, plus preserved every question for counsel.
The same certification board that had approved unit 14 suspended its licence before the registrar reached the hall exit.
'Public reversal by their own signature... Paloma did not even need a camera,' Ossian watched the posting, 'let the document bite once.'
When the observers left, Calista remained inside the empty hall and placed Caliper's floor mark beneath Ossian's front foot.
She corrected his crate entry seven times, moving his shoulder by inches while refusing to call the loss good experience.
On the eighth attempt, Ossian cleared the imagined staff without leaning onto his swollen left leg.
Calista stayed beside him after the movement ended, her shoulder touching his while both watched the empty square.
Neither stepped away before the emergency system cut every hall light and announced a Block Event beneath Meridian Central Station.
The public channel carried no dispatcher, route map, or official command through the rising feedback.
One damaged woman's voice remained, counting trapped civilians while something below the station copied her breath between every number.
