Maskbound: The Ultimate Hunter
Chapter 49 The Voice on the Dead Channel
Meridian Central Station had lost every route light before Ossian reached the first stair, leaving smoke to define the ceiling.
The damaged voice counted thirty-two civilians behind a service gate while feedback opened an old wound across her throat.
'One voice carrying a station after the system failed... somebody without authority already commands the useful route,' Ossian entered, 'find her first.'
Tavet followed with Caliper folded, his evaluation order still leaving Dreadweight's combat configuration formally unregistered.
"Rescue activity is permitted, but any mask deployment will trigger immediate suspension pending emergency review," he said.
Ossian wanted to argue that a Block Event had already made the review irrelevant, yet thirty-two voices waited below.
'Gate access later, breathing people now... damn, choose before the system turns refusal into virtue,' Ossian closed every face, 'rescue only.'
Paloma authorised four thousand credits for station respirators, medical transport, plus damage bonds demanded by the transit authority.
The guild account fell from 150,000 to 146,000 while Bastien distributed equipment from the van without losing one signature.
Calista took the western stair with Ione, leaving Ossian, Tavet, Maelle, plus Vaska to follow the damaged public channel east.
"Three steps down, rail missing on your right, smoke pocket below the landing," the woman said through a speaker.
Ossian obeyed before asking her name, finding every hazard exactly where her strained voice placed it.
The system objected to accepting direction from an unidentified human outside its Court.
[Unknown signal creature is directing apex movement]
[No registered weapon configuration is available]
[Thirty-two allied lives remain below]
'Signal creature knows the battlefield, apex does not... correct insult for once,' Ossian tested the missing rail, 'keep listening.'
The eastern concourse had folded around a derailed service carriage, trapping heat beneath the roof and civilians behind ticket barriers.
Odelia Quist sat inside the abandoned control booth with blood soaking the collar beneath a headset.
Her old throat scar had split under feedback, yet one hand continued moving route switches across a dead screen by memory.
"Do not enter platform two, since the announcement speakers repeat instructions after I stop speaking," she said.
Something beneath the tiles copied her last sentence with the words reversed, making trapped civilians turn toward the wrong gate.
'A voice becoming bait after it leaves her mouth... hell, every useful call feeds the thing below,' Ossian reached the booth, 'ask for signals, not sentences.'
Odelia refused medical evacuation until the thirty-two people behind the service gate reached clean air.
Tavet identified no supernatural ability in her work, only remembered routes, breath control, plus professional refusal to abandon a channel.
"I need calls shorter than the echo delay, using direction through count rather than names," Ossian said.
Odelia struck twice on the microphone, waited for the speakers to repeat silence, then tapped once toward the eastern passage.
The pattern sent Ossian around platform two without giving the buried mimic a verbal instruction to reverse.
Maelle used her hammer as a heat probe, finding one wall cool enough to open beside the trapped service gate.
Vaska released a narrow oil cloud through its seam, proving human breath waited beyond it without scavenger contamination.
'Plain sound, ordinary heat, prepared scent... no mask required if everyone owns one piece,' Ossian took Dreadweight, 'break the wall normally.'
He used the empty gauntlets as five-kilogram striking plates, cracking plaster while receiving every rebound through bruising human arms.
No impact stored inside either empty socket, and no converted heat answered through Dreadweight after nine blows along Maelle's marked load line.
The wall still opened through placement, weight, plus a porter's knowledge of where cheap renovation stopped supporting itself.
Thirty-two civilians waited behind it, six unable to walk, plus one child holding a station map upside down.
Odelia tapped three times, directing the group toward a freight ramp omitted from public evacuation signs.
Tavet carried the first injured adult without treating physical labour as beneath an evaluator, while Vaska marked clear air ahead.
'He classifies threats, still takes weight when weight needs hands... inconveniently decent again,' Ossian lifted two people, 'follow three taps.'
The buried creature copied those taps through the floor, adding a fourth impact that pointed civilians toward platform two.
Odelia changed rhythm immediately, using two slow beats plus one fast strike against the microphone frame.
Everyone who had heard her earlier recognised the correction, while the mimic repeated the obsolete pattern beneath them.
Feedback tore the wound wider when she tried to warn Calista's western team through the shared channel.
Blood entered the microphone, turning her next breath into a wet pulse across every speaker in the station.
The creature answered that pulse from three separate platforms, revealing its body extended beneath more than one track.
'Her injury mapped it... shit, useful pain is still pain,' Ossian opened the booth door, 'Odelia, stop speaking now.'
She looked at him with the anger of someone who had spent twenty minutes being obeyed by strangers before receiving her first command.
Ossian corrected himself, "Thirty-two are moving, leaving you to decide whether your voice survives the next route."
Odelia removed the headset, wrote WEST TEAM beneath a station code, plus pointed toward an analogue maintenance handset.
The handset connected directly through copper rather than the compromised announcement network, letting her reach Calista without broadcast echo.
She used seven words, warning that something occupied the full platform foundation and hunted repeated instructions.
Calista answered through two spear strikes against pipe, confirming her twelve civilians had reached the northern stair.
Odelia smiled at the useful reply without making any sound, then allowed the medical observer to close her throat wound.
The eastern group reached the freight ramp before smoke lowered to shoulder height across the concourse.
Bastien counted thirty-two out, Calista brought twelve more, plus station staff delivered nineteen from the street-level shops.
Sixty-three civilians survived the first evacuation movement, with eleven still missing on the platform register.
Three missing names belonged to station cleaners whose route cards ended inside a locked supply corridor beneath platform four.
Two were transit guards last heard moving an injured passenger, while five commuters had called from a stalled carriage.
The final name belonged to a food seller who had refused evacuation until every worker behind her counter left first.
Odelia remembered each call, including background noises, family references, plus the direction of breathing beneath spoken words.
"The seller has a coin dispenser that jams after every fourth press, while a copy will repeat the complaint without metal," she wrote.
'Personal details as rescue keys... the mimic steals sound, not a life behind it,' Ossian read the list, 'make every answer cost memory.'
Ione distributed one detail to each rescuer, preventing the creature from learning the entire identification method through any single exchange.
Vaska marked human scent beneath platform four, but smoke carried it across enough turns to create two plausible corridors.
Maelle used rail temperature to eliminate the flooded passage, finding no recent body heat along its iron fixings.
Tavet accepted both results as evidence without treating either specialist as subordinate to his classification order.
The stalled carriage produced six voices when Ossian called the first commuter, although the register listed only five people there.
'A number moved by somebody the registry calls support... familiar work under a better voice,' Ossian checked the list, 'find the eleven.'
Odelia wrote their names from memory, adding one personal detail beside each so rescuers could distinguish frightened people from copied voices.
Tavet permitted Ossian to continue unpowered rescue while formally denying combat engagement beneath the platform.
"Your empty gauntlets protected civilians without violating classification, but do not convert that fact into permission I never granted," he said.
'A narrow legal door through a monster floor... enough for the next breath,' Ossian accepted the line, 'Odelia chooses the calls.'
She returned to the analogue handset after treatment, breathing through bandages while tapping the first missing person's route.
A deep note answered from beneath the station before her knuckles left the metal casing.
The sound matched Odelia's pitch exactly, held it longer than her damaged throat could, plus ended by saying her name through the rails.
