Mercenary’s War

Chapter 2688 - 2662: Never Dare to Forget

  • Next Chapter

The days of retirement are indeed as expected, boring.

When I was a mercenary, taking some time out of my busy schedule to go home for a few days, I felt that a peaceful life was particularly wonderful. However, when all days are to be spent like this, Gao Yang found himself feeling extremely unadapted on the very first day.

It’s actually just that the tightly-strung string in the mind has relaxed a bit, and there’s still some time needed to adjust to the state of life after the nerves unwind.

The private jet first arrived in Seattle, dropping off Lucica. Gao Yang took the opportunity to visit Bruce’s two children. After staying overnight in Seattle, he took Yarebin and Glewatov to his farm.

The results of Yarebin’s examination at New York Hospital were not bad. His body was normal, but the organs of an eighty-something-year-old man are beginning to fail, so everything being normal is only relative to an eighty-something-year-old person’s normal. Therefore, Yarebin’s condition wasn’t very good.

That is to say, Yarebin hasn’t reached the point where he can no longer move. If he’s careful with maintenance, it would be completely normal for him to live another three to five years, but there is also the possibility of him dying at any time.

Some people live a few more years, while others live a few less. When people get old, they will eventually die. No one can help it. What Gao Yang can do is to let Yarebin rest well and ensure that the last few years of his life are comfortable.

"This is my ranch, except there isn’t a single cow, haha. I really like it here, and I hope you all will too."

Opening the door and inviting Yarebin inside, Gao Yang extended a hand and said, "Please come in."

Yarebin slowly walked into the house. He glanced around, nodded, and smiled, saying, "This is nice."

After inviting Yarebin and Glewatov to sit down, Gao Yang smiled cheerfully and said, "Not many people come here, and those who do are just me and Yelena. So, if it’s just the few of us, eating will be a problem. But don’t worry, I have hired professional staff to take care of our lives."

Yarebin shook his head and said, "Too much indulgence is not good."

Although he only said that indulgence is bad, Yarebin did not say to stop finding people to serve them.

Yarebin smiled and said, "Aren’t you going to show me your collection?"

Gao Yang immediately stood up and said, "If you’re not tired, then come on, please come over, everyone. Please enjoy my collection."

There are truly a lot of guns collected on this ranch, very, very many guns.

From the initial experimental model stages of the M1911 to an extremely complete collection of boxed guns, from the Mauser 98K and P38 left to Gao Yang by Fedor, to the spoils of war Gao Yang seized from enemies. Every gun here has special meaning to Gao Yang.

The group toured for a long time, chatting and laughing, praising Gao Yang’s collection, until Yarebin picked up a sniper rifle and softly said, "This is a museum piece. This is a sniper rifle of a battle hero."

Gao Yang smiled and said, "Yes, this is Poloneshenko’s collection. Uh, I snatched it from him."

Yarebin was silent for a while, then he said softly to Gao Yang, "This gun shouldn’t be locked in your gun cabinet."

Gao Yang was taken aback and said, "What do you mean?"

Yarebin weighed the gun in his hand, then said in a deep voice, "This is a Soviet hero’s gun. It should return to Moscow’s museum. I don’t know how this gun came to be in your hands, but I’d like to ask you to give it to me, and I will give it to Russia’s museum."

Yarebin shook his head and said with a face full of emotion, "I know that the vast majority of people don’t miss the Soviet Union, but there are always some who do. They might want to look at the museum and see the evidence of what was done in those years, by those people."

Gao Yang immediately responded solemnly, "I’ve given it to you, sir. Which museum do you want to donate this gun to?"

Yarebin paused for a moment, returned the gun to the shelf, and softly said: "Any museum will do."

Yarebin turned and left the room where Gao Yang stored his guns, unspoken, feeling somewhat desolate as he walked back.

Gao Yang quickly followed, softly saying, "Sir, what’s wrong?"

Yarebin gave a bitter smile and then said softly, "Have you been to Moscow’s Tomb of the Unknown Soldier?"

"Uh, I visited Red Square once, I saw it."

Yarebin sighed softly and said, "Some people die and leave behind something, but more people die silently, leaving nothing behind, not even a name."

Gao Yang looked at Glewatov, who gently shook his head, signaling Gao Yang not to say anything.

Yarebin continued in a low voice, "I often think of those sacrificed brothers because I’m afraid that when I die, no one will remember their names."

Gao Yang felt a tightening in his heart, as if someone had grabbed his heart and twisted it.

Yarebin looked at Glewatov and said softly, "What is your name, I mean your real name."

Glewatov was stunned for a moment. He thought for a long time before hesitantly saying, "My last name is Shenikov?"

Yarebin sighed and said, "You really have even forgotten your own name. You are Igor Shenikov."

Glewatov said softly, "What meaning is there in remembering this..."

Yarebin looked at Glewatov and said, "From the day you joined the Black Demon, you were prohibited from using your true name. You would have a completely new name, a new identity, a new life. You were forced to sever everything from your past, family, friends. Did you ever hate me?"

Glewatov smiled and said softly, "I was young and naive at the time. At first, I did resent you a bit, but later I didn’t. Really."

Yarebin looked at Glewatov and said, "Do you still remember your family?"

Glewatov said softly, "I remember, I still have impressions of my parents, but they have all passed away. I don’t have siblings, and I can’t remember other relatives."

Yarebin said softly, "You don’t have any archives, no records. After decades of brainwashing education, where can you find your home? You are all geniuses, but those who trained you are also geniuses, Glewatov."

"Captain."

"I’m sorry."

"It doesn’t matter, I’ve never regretted joining the Black Demon."

Yarebin slowly said, "Actually, I remember each of your real names, only I know. I’ve seen each of your files and destroyed them. I’ve always kept it in mind, afraid to forget. Do you want to go back and see your home? Maybe my memory is not wrong, maybe you can find some relatives."

Glewatov smiled and said, "Forget it, Captain. I don’t want to search anymore, I already have a home and children, everything I’m familiar with is gone, finding the unfamiliar part has no meaning. Captain, do you remember your real name?"

Yarebin took a slow breath and said, "My name is Yakin Libinsky, I was born in Tbilisi, Georgia, but I grew up in Sochi. It’s really a wonderful place..."
