Chapter 174: Chapter 130: The Difference Between a Girl and a Woman
"Yes."
Nancy Stuart answered Mary’s question without hesitation.
Mary had gotten the answer she wanted, but it did nothing to improve her mood.
"How did he know Lorne Jackson was poisoned?"
Mary considered her work flawless. Lorne Jackson had been given a slow-acting poison that showed no symptoms before taking effect. The poison was also extremely rare; even if it were discovered, a cure would be impossible to find.
The only sliver of hope would have been if a member of the Clergy, like a Grand Priest who had mastered the High Level Healing Technique, discovered it right after the poisoning.
"Lian Moria is himself a Divine Scholar with high Medical Skill."
Nancy Stuart said.
"How did he cure Lorne Jackson?"
"He used a very unique method. Have you heard of the Golden Goddess Church?"
Nancy Stuart asked in return.
"I know of it. I heard Lian Moria and Catherine’s engagement was held at the Golden Goddess Church."
Mary recalled the details mentioned in the newspaper. Although she had never heard of the Golden Goddess before, she was said to be a Secret Angel under the God of Tiger, who had been imprisoned in the Bone Forest until Lian received a divine revelation, rescued Her, built a church for Her, and began spreading Her name far and wide.
It sounded like something out of a fairy tale, but many had confirmed the Golden Goddess’s existence, especially the Guards from the Green Shade Territory. Word spread like wildfire, and the tales of the Golden Goddess traveled far. In the South, many had already come to know Her name and that She represented luck and wealth.
"Yes, the Golden Goddess holds dominion over luck and wealth. In addition to that, She can also bestow blessings upon Her Believers."
Nancy Stuart said.
"Lian Moria had Lorne Jackson convert to the Golden Goddess. He received the Goddess’s blessing, and that’s how he survived."
Nancy Stuart was not lying on this point, so Mary detected nothing amiss.
Deceiving Mary was no simple task, so Nancy Stuart had to offer some genuine intelligence.
"The Golden Goddess can actually do that?"
Mary was a Believer in the God of Tiger, and she had no intention of changing her faith. However, she wouldn’t mind building a few Golden Goddess Churches in Yusofa and having the soldiers of the Rose Army pray for a little luck.
"Yes. Lian Moria said the Golden Goddess can even descend to the mortal world. She is one of the Secret Angels most partial to humanity."
"That is indeed a method I’d never considered. For now, it explains how Lorne Jackson could have survived."
Mary took the red wine from a Maid and swirled the blood-red liquid in her glass.
"Nancy, what else do you know?"
"Lian Moria’s father does not want him to marry Catherine. On the day of the engagement, a Knight from Green Shade Territory delivered a letter in which Old Moria voiced his opposition to their union. He is still bitter about being disowned by the clan for marrying into the Jackson Family."
Nancy Stuart said.
"This information is meaningless to me. Old Moria is just a coward who deserted his post. He has no deep bond with Lian Moria. Even if we captured him, he couldn’t be used as leverage against Lian."
Mary said flatly.
"My apologies. I haven’t been by his side for long, so this is all I could find out. To learn anything more substantial, I must remain embedded with him."
Nancy Stuart offered an apology.
Mary held out her wineglass to Nancy Stuart.
Nancy Stuart’s beautiful brows furrowed slightly. She knelt on the floor.
"Lady Mary, you already control my heart. It’s impossible for me to betray you."
"Then why did you lie to me?"
Mary asked coldly.
"I... I didn’t lie."
Nancy Stuart didn’t know how she had been exposed.
Every word she had said could be corroborated, and most of it was true—or at least, it was what Lian had told her.
"Are you Lian Moria’s number one mistress now?"
Mary asked.
"No, I am just his mistress."
Nancy Stuart said, her head bowed.
Mary put down the wineglass, walked over to Nancy Stuart again, tore off her resin mask, and lifted her delicate chin.
"Then why are you still a virgin?"
Nancy Stuart froze. She couldn’t believe her disguise had failed.
The servants in the great hall were astonished by Nancy Stuart’s beauty.
It was the kind of beauty that would make any other woman feel inadequate in comparison.
"Don’t you know the difference between a young maiden and a married woman? The way you hold your legs so tightly together... it’s no different from before."
Mary’s observation was incredibly detailed, a point Nancy Stuart could not refute.
"Yes. I have not yet given myself to him completely. If a man like Lian Moria possesses a woman too easily, she becomes a mere plaything and loses all her value. I don’t just want to be his number one mistress; I want to be his wife. That’s why I refused his advances. And it is precisely because of this that he is so infatuated with me. For men, what they can’t have is always the most desirable."
Nancy Stuart said, her expression unchanging. "Only by becoming his wife can I gain the true support of the Moria Clan and become a greater asset to you. I will be the best Spy you have planted within the Creed Clan."
