Mommy, Daddy Has Already Regretted It
Chapter 466: What Kind of Friend Is Miss Yeats to Me?
Chapter 466: Chapter 466: What Kind of Friend Is Miss Yeats to Me?
"How do you have the nerve to say Radiance was a gift to you from Mr. Sloan?!"
Vera Sawyer exploded the moment she heard that. Her voice instantly pitched up into a hoarse scream. "Claire Yeats! How can you be so shameless?!
"You made me offend our new boss! You made me fight your battles on the front lines! And now you still have the nerve to claim Radiance is a gift for you?!
"I just came back from Evernight International, yet you’re still trying to keep me in the dark. Don’t you think you’re being ridiculous?!"
The moment she finished roaring, everyone snapped their heads around. They shot covert glances at Vera, completely stunned by the bombshell she had just dropped.
Even the people who had been sucking up to Claire just moments ago hesitated. "Miss Yeats...? Didn’t you say Radiance was yours...?"
Claire’s face paled slightly. "Ms. Sawyer, I don’t know what you’re talking about. Radiance is indeed a company Nathaniel gifted to me. I’m about to take office as chairman, and I’ll be managing it from now on. I understand that your apology didn’t go smoothly, but as long as you explain yourself properly, I won’t blame you. What are you doing?"
With that, she shook her head, putting on a show of magnanimous helplessness. "Ms. Sawyer, as the new chairman of Radiance, I must warn you this once. Don’t let this happen again."
"What a joke! You’re still in denial!" Vera abruptly raised her voice. "Claire Yeats, do you really need someone to slap you across the face before you realize it hurts?! Fine, then let me make it crystal clear.
"Radiance was obviously a gift from Mr. Sloan to Mrs. Sloan! It’s a gift between a husband and wife—why is a witch like you trying to snatch it away?! Do you even deserve it? Who do you think you are?!"
The room fell dead silent. Everyone exchanged bewildered looks. In a lobby packed with dozens of people, you could have heard a pin drop.
Claire’s expression stiffened. She subconsciously took half a step back but still managed to hold her ground. "Ms. Sawyer, I don’t understand what you’re saying.
"Yes, I admit that Estelle and Nathaniel are husband and wife, and that they have a great relationship, but that doesn’t mean Nathaniel doesn’t have other friends.
"My meeting with Nathaniel was a coincidence, but it happened. We’re very good friends, and he chose to give Radiance to me.
"That’s the truth. I don’t understand why you’re—"
"Friends?"
Suddenly, a smooth, clear male voice interrupted Claire. His tone was calm, completely unruffled.
Nathaniel Sloan was dressed in a black silk shirt that accentuated his broad shoulders and narrow waist. "I am quite curious. Exactly what kind of friends are Miss Yeats and I?"
Claire’s eyes grew red. She bit her lip and shook her head helplessly. "Nathaniel, I know you don’t want to admit it. I can give up Radiance, but..."
She glanced hesitantly at Estelle Lockwood before finally sighing. "I understand, Nathaniel. I won’t make things difficult for you."
She said it as though she had suffered some great injustice, but Claire was indeed a smart woman. Replying like this actually turned the situation to her advantage.
If word got out, it wouldn’t sound like she had deliberately usurped someone else’s gift. Instead, it would seem as though she was protecting Nathaniel and Estelle’s marriage, choking back her reluctance to tell a white lie.
Her words were explicitly telling everyone, "I am Nathaniel Sloan’s friend of seven years, and Radiance is his gift to me. But because his wife is unhappy, I am swallowing my pride and compromising for the greater good."
Estelle chuckled.
Nathaniel’s expression grew even colder. "Since Miss Yeats doesn’t want to make things difficult for me, we might as well make things completely clear.
"I have no idea how a gift I prepared for seven years became yours. Estelle and I have been married for seven years. Radiance was founded on the exact day we got our marriage license. Tell me, did Miss Yeats become ’friends’ with me on that day?
"Miss Yeats, the gift I gave Estelle has nothing to do with you. Please spare us your narcissism."
His tone was calm and indifferent, yet his words felt like several heavy slaps landing squarely across Claire’s face.
At this moment, President Kerr’s nonchalant voice drifted over. "All of Mr. Sloan’s trusted aides at Radiance know that the date the company was founded was specifically chosen by him."
Several executives nodded in agreement.
"Mr. Sloan said it was a very important date."
"Ah, I think so... Mr. Sloan didn’t come in until the afternoon that day. When we asked him what he was doing in the morning, he said he went to the Civil Affairs Bureau."
"Wow... So you’re saying that Radiance was founded on the exact same day Mr. and Mrs. Sloan got married?"
"In that case, no matter how you look at it, this gift was meant for Mrs. Sloan, not Miss Yeats, right?"
"Exactly. Setting up a company on your wedding day that’s destined to be given away as a gift... Anyone with half a brain could figure out that the recipient had to be Mrs. Sloan. Otherwise, why would he pick that specific day?"
"Then what exactly is Miss Yeats doing...?"
Many people looked at Claire in confusion.
President Kerr said meaningfully, "The moment Miss Yeats arrived at Radiance, she deceived Ms. Sawyer, and now she has fooled quite a few employees in other positions. What are you trying to pull? Today is a good day. Miss Lockwood—oh, wait, we should call her Chairman Lockwood now. Our Chairman Lockwood is kind-hearted and doesn’t want to make an ugly scene, but Miss Yeats, we can’t just let this slide, can we?"
Claire ground her teeth as a bead of cold sweat rolled down her forehead, hitting the floor with a soft PLOP.
"Judging by Miss Yeats’s complexion, is she unable to explain herself? You should at least clarify how this misunderstanding came about, right?" President Kerr narrowed his eyes, deliberately exaggerating, "Could it be that she was impersonating the new boss to steal trade secrets? Good heavens, if that’s the case, we really need to investigate this thoroughly. Mr. Sloan, we have to make an example out of her. I suggest we sue. Better safe than sorry. Who knows if Miss Yeats actually harbored such intentions?"
Hearing the word ’sue,’ Claire finally panicked. "Mr. Sloan! You wrote me a letter, don’t you remember?!"
Nathaniel’s expression was icy. "That so-called letter you mentioned was forged by someone mimicking my handwriting. I have already submitted it to my lawyer. If Miss Yeats has no other explanation, then I can only say I’m sorry."
Claire’s face froze.
W-What... A forgery?!
"No, no... How could it be a forgery? You sent it to me..." Seeing the bodyguards approaching to throw her out, Claire looked absolutely frantic. "That was your handwriting! I’m sure of it, it definitely was..."
"Miss Yeats can discuss that with the lawyer," Nathaniel cut her off impassively and gave a slight raise of his hand.
President Kerr immediately understood. He bowed respectfully to Estelle. "Chairman Lockwood, everyone is here. Shall we proceed with the handover ceremony first?"
Estelle smiled and nodded.
Claire was dragged out by the bodyguards. The minor interlude quickly passed. She was like a pebble tossed into a lake; at first glance, she had kicked up a huge splash, but merely two seconds later, everything settled back into silent nothingness.
Sometime later, at the Yeats family estate.
After being mercilessly tossed out, Claire grew increasingly resentful the more she thought about it. That was obviously hers!
Biting her lip hard, Claire threw herself into Old Mrs. Yeats’s arms in tears. Twisting the truth, she subtly lodged her complaint, "Grandma, no matter what, Estelle is still a member of the Yeats. Is it really appropriate for her to just rely on men out there...?"
Meanwhile, back at Radiance Entertainment.
With the handover ceremony complete, Estelle officially became the chairman of Radiance Entertainment.
A call came in from the Kendrick Family. "Estelle, happy birthday."
Mrs. Kendrick, Eleanor Vance, chuckled softly over the line. "How about your godmother throws you a birthday party?"
