"Hmph, since they didn’t kowtow and offer New Year’s greetings to us, next year I’ll tell Daemon not to let his wife kowtow to Bodhi Lancaster’s family either!"

Eva Hayes kept grumbling resentfully. Atlas Lancaster had just opened his mouth to scold her a few more times when the door to the living room was slammed open and one of Daemon Lancaster’s servants from his rooms rushed in in a panic.

"Second Master, Second Madam, our Madam seems to be having a miscarriage!"

"What did you say?"

Eva shot to her feet. There were still less than four months before Victoria Thornton was due. She never did any work at home; how could she be having a miscarriage?

"Our Madam seems to be having a miscarriage."

Atlas stood up as well. "What’s going on?"

"Madam saw how heavy the snow was outside and wanted to build a snowman, but she slipped and fell forward onto the shovel."

"That’s just ridiculous!" Atlas sat back down again and slapped the sofa in anger.

"You stay home, I’ll go with them to the hospital." Eva hurriedly threw on her overcoat and then followed the servant out.

The snow had fallen for most of the night yesterday. On the way back from the Old Master’s, Victoria saw the servants in the house sweeping the snow and decided she wanted to build a snowman.

She was several months pregnant, and bundled up in layers. As she was scooping up snow, her foot slipped and she went sprawling into the snow. By the time the servants helped her up, there was already blood.

Even though the two branches of the family didn’t get along, with something this serious happening, Daxton Lancaster still went to the hospital together with Lorelei Howard.

For something like this to happen on New Year’s Day left everyone feeling uneasy, but it didn’t affect Joseph Lancaster’s mood.

Back when he’d taken Violet Zimmerman to the movies, he’d promised to build her a big snowman. Last night the snow happened to be heavy, so after dinner, Joseph took a shovel and went over to Violet’s place.

Whether it was to avoid suspicion or what, he actually, for once, called his younger sister Aurora Lancaster over too, and the three of them started building a snowman together in the courtyard.

Violet was wrapped up like a zongzi, and her little brother-in-law and little sister-in-law escorted her carefully outside.

The snow in the courtyard had already been piled into mounds by the servants. Using one of the tall mounds of snow, Joseph held up the shovel and carefully shaped it.

Aurora was tightly holding onto Violet’s arm, worried she might slip and fall like their cousin-in-law.

The young man was deft and quick with his hands; in no time at all the snowman’s outline was clearly visible.

After carving out the body, then the head, once the shape was trimmed, Aurora suggested, "Second Brother, the snowman needs a hat!"

"That’s easy, just grab any bucket and stick it on top."

Joseph laughed as he spoke, and refined the outline a bit more. "Sis-in-law, tell the servants to bring over one of the carrots we use to feed Little White."

Violet Zimmerman...

The smile on her face vanished in an instant.

"Sis-in-law, what’s wrong? Are you feeling unwell?" Aurora asked nervously. Their cousin-in-law had just had an accident, and instinctively she worried her own sister-in-law might also have something wrong.

Joseph turned his head too. Seeing the obvious change in Violet’s expression, he tossed aside the shovel and walked over.

"What’s wrong? Are you feeling unwell?" Standing opposite Violet, the bright, sunny smile on the young man’s face was gone; in that moment, what stood in front of her was a serious man.

Violet forced her lips into a semblance of a smile and stammered, "Joseph... Little White... I ate it. I’ve been craving so badly these days, I just really wanted to eat meat."

She was afraid that if her little brother-in-law found out it had been Daxton Lancaster who’d deliberately had Little White killed, it would cause a rift between the brothers, so Violet told a white lie.

If her little brother-in-law needed to blame someone, he could blame her. After all, she was the outsider with a different surname.
