Mr. CEO's Substitute Bride
Chapter 1594 - 1584: Wherever My Gaze Falls, There Will Be Everlasting Love
When Violet Zimmerman returned to her residence, Daxton Lancaster was still not back. The Lancaster Family’s location was some distance from the city’s shops, so driving back and forth took more than an hour.
Walking into the house absentmindedly, she only gave a perfunctory response when the servants greeted her.
At this time, Violet would usually take a nap, but now, whenever she closed her eyes, all she could see was her uncle’s figure.
Although Joseph Lancaster sought her opinion, he didn’t wait for her consent before pressing his thin lips down, cupping her face, and gently kissing her lips, taking a long time to pull away.
His thumb lightly rubbed her lip corner, whispering, "This kiss is enough for Joseph to savor a lifetime."
At that moment, Joseph’s lip corners were lifted, but Violet’s heart felt as if something had tightly gripped it, suffocating her intensely, and even now, it can’t calm down.
Unexpectedly, she found herself deeply understanding the adjective "tragically beautiful" from her uncle’s smile.
Such an impotent and helpless emotion shouldn’t belong to a child still in school, yet she truly saw it on his face.
Turning over again, Violet’s embroidered brows furrowed with worry. The image of her uncle’s slightly lifted lip corners still lingered, as if printed in her mind, unwelcome and stubborn...
Daxton Lancaster was furious, and the second branch of the family quieted down a lot. This waiting period was arguably the happiest time for Violet Zimmerman.
Her husband, Daxton Lancaster, showed her care and tenderness by bringing lots of delicious food every day after work and instructing the kitchen to make a small pot just for her.
Her mother-in-law also took special care of her, often having the servants bring her over for chats, and the uncle who promised to stand by her side for life and watch her happiness seemed to know her mind like a worm in her stomach, always bringing back the flavors she craved.
It started with candied hawthorns and sour pears and later went on to cooked food, like a pig’s hand or a chicken leg, brought for Violet to enjoy as a midnight snack.
In spring, the willow trees in the yard sprouted little buds, and Joseph Lancaster returned from school carrying a basket of rabbits, five of them, tied to the back seat of his bicycle, directly arriving at Violet Zimmerman’s place.
"Brother, I heard last time sister-in-law likes rabbit meat a lot, so I specially got more from my classmates."
One of his classmates raised rabbits at home, so he paid to buy a whole brood.
Watching his brother bringing in the rabbit basket, Daxton Lancaster furrowed his brow imperceptibly, folded the newspaper in his hand, placed it beside him, and smiled.
"Joseph, you are truly considerate. Let me thank you on behalf of your sister-in-law."
"What’s there to thank for, brother? We’re family. If anyone should thank someone, it’s sister-in-law. She is a meritorious minister of the Lancaster Family."
While speaking, Joseph Lancaster handed the rabbit basket to the servant.
"It’s cold now, you can’t leave them outside. They’ll get diarrhea if they catch a cold. Let’s wait until it’s warmer, then we can raise them in the yard and feed them plenty of greens and carrots to fatten them up and supplement nutrition for my little nephew."
Joseph carefully instructed, and the servant took the basket.
"Yes, Second Young Master."
Daxton Lancaster unconsciously tightened his phoenix eyes. His brother Joseph often visited, familiar with the servants, but he gave instructions so naturally to the servants without asking, making him uncomfortable, feeling like a cuckoo in a magpie’s nest.
And there’s what he said before, that his wife is a meritorious minister of the Lancaster Family.
If they were a normal couple, his uncle’s praises for his sister-in-law would mean nothing. But because their relationship is unusual, one can’t help but think it actually implies something more.
Daxton slightly narrowed his phoenix eyes, watching his brother at the door, suddenly finding himself unable to understand him.
Normally, after doing such things within uncle-aunt-in-law relationships, shouldn’t they avoid each other? At the very least, they shouldn’t act so naturally upon meeting, right?
But his brother, not only does he not avoid it, but he still visits like he used to, as naturally as ever, without a hint of embarrassment. Is his scheming too deep, or... does he intend to pry at the walls?
"Is sister-in-law resting upstairs now?"
Joseph Lancaster seemed to not notice his brother Daxton Lancaster’s unease, changing into slippers as he walked in.
Pulling back his thoughts, Daxton picked up the same newspaper, opening it while casually saying, "She’s gone to Mom’s room for a chat."
"Oh," Joseph Lancaster sat down on the long couch beside Daxton Lancaster.
