Joseph Lancaster paused slightly as he descended the stairs, but after just a second, he descended the last step and walked over to the sofa with a smile, saying.

"I happened to see a lot of people lining up for freshly cooked pork knuckles at Wanbao Shun, so I brought one back for you, sister-in-law."

Joseph Lancaster understood very well the implications behind his brother Daxton Lancaster’s words, but he didn’t feel that what he was doing was overstepping. He only wanted to be good to his sister-in-law and never intended to ask for anything in return, so there was no need to be secretive about it.

"Really, thank you then." Daxton originally wanted to make a fuss, but now that his brother Joseph was so open and honest, he couldn’t find a reason to argue.

Seeing Joseph sit down on the sofa beside him, Daxton stood up, took the official bag from the coat rack, took out his wallet, and said, "Ever since your sister-in-law got pregnant, you’ve spent quite a bit. Here’s some money for spending."

Daxton returned and placed a stack of banknotes in front of Joseph, who was displeased at the time.

"Big brother, we’re a family. Compared to the company you gave me, what is the little money I spend?"

The young man furrowed his brows tightly, looking at his brother Daxton Lancaster reproachfully.

Since ancient times, everyone loves money, especially in an era of material scarcity.

But Joseph Lancaster was an exception. Faced with a stack of banknotes worth over a hundred dollars in front of him from his brother, he didn’t even glance at it.

The Lancaster Family had money, but the monthly allowance was fixed, neither more nor less.

The family would pay for essential transportation like a bicycle, but for non-essential items like a tape recorder, Joseph saved up his monthly allowance to buy them himself.

The Lancaster Family was well-off, and the meals were good, and since Joseph was a boy who didn’t like snacks as much as girls did, he used to save all the monthly allowances into the bank, and over time, the interest was enough for his pocket money.

But ever since Violet Zimmerman became pregnant, Joseph spent all his pocket money on buying food for her, sometimes even withdrawing some savings from the bank to supplement.

Without food stamps, buying food required negotiation, and although Daxton never asked, the man who took care of the household from the age of fifteen knew about these trivial matters of life very well.

Seeing Joseph’s firm attitude, Daxton asked with a half-smile, "Really don’t want it?"

"No." Joseph shook his head.

"Not feeling the pinch?" Daxton leaned over, took back the stack of banknotes, and tapped them a few times in his palm.

"What’s there to feel the pinch about? The money wasn’t spent by outsiders, all that food went to nourish my future nephew."

As he said this, the corners of Joseph’s lips curled up, and his expression softened.

Daxton paused in tapping the banknotes, and the casual smile on his lips disappeared as well.

Because what he saw and heard from his brother’s words was sincerity, without a trace of insincerity.

"You really think like this?" Daxton unconsciously tightened his eyes, wondering if his brother always considered his "child" as a nephew, rather than...

"Yes," facing Daxton’s somewhat probing and skeptical gaze, Joseph nodded openly, his expression becoming even softer.

"I’ve been thinking, ever since watching cousin Maximilian growing up at brother Weiguo’s place, about when you would give me a nephew too, so I could take him to the zoo on my bike."

Joseph seemed to already see that picture, the back seat of his bicycle fitted with a baby seat, him riding to the zoo with the baby, seeing many people there, he would raise the baby onto his shoulders like other parents so the baby could see farther...

That was also the kind of life Daxton longed for, and as he talked about children, an indescribable emotion appeared on his face, but Joseph was already immersed in his own crafted picture of happiness and didn’t notice.

"Why does it have to be a nephew, not a niece?"

Daxton asked, and Joseph returned to his senses and looked at him.

"I like boys, they’re more resilient, girls are too delicate."

"Ha, no wonder you’ve never liked playing with Aurora since childhood." Daxton chuckled, then threw another bomb.

"What if your sister-in-law has a girl this time, won’t that derail your plans?"

Daxton looked at his brother Joseph with a half-smile, appearing calm on the surface but secretly observing his brother’s reaction.

"That’s nothing. Anyway, you and sister-in-law are still young. If this one’s a girl, you can just have another one, until it’s a boy!"
