Mr. CEO's Substitute Bride
Chapter 1598 - 1586: Wherever the Eye Gazes, It Is Everlasting: Brothers Harboring Their Own Thoughts
Joseph Lancaster spoke without thinking.
Daxton Lancaster’s phoenix eyes squinted slightly again. For some time now, he had been pondering whether his younger brother had already discovered his body’s hidden ailment, whether he knew that it was under his directive that his wife tried to seduce him.
Now, it seemed that he was unaware. After all, his age was not that advanced, and as a student engrossed in his studies, his thoughts were quite simple, believing that his wife fancied him, which stirred his youthful and naive heart...
At that moment, Daxton was considering that as long as his wife, Violet Zimmerman, distanced herself from him and introduced him to a girlfriend, he would put an end to his naive feelings towards his own wife.
"Brother, why have you been looking at me? Was there something wrong with what I said?"
Seeing his elder brother, Daxton, staring at him, Joseph asked puzzledly.
Even then, the young man harbored selfish thoughts; he liked boys, hoping that this child would be a son. Yet, the devil within secretly hoped for a girl, for if that were the case, his sister-in-law would have to continue seeking his "help." As the family head, Daxton needed someone to inherit his legacy.
Daxton returned to his senses, lowered his gaze with a smile, hiding his guilt.
"You’re right. My wife and I are still young. Although things have opened up now, advocating family planning, it’s still better to have a few more children, for the liveliness."
For some unknown reason, upon hearing his older brother Daxton say this, Joseph felt his heart, hidden beneath his clothing, inexplicably leap with joy.
At dinner, Violet Zimmerman was served a chicken leg, ordered by Daxton for the driver to buy from the city.
Since the conflict over the fish soup, Daxton decided to have the second branch eat at his place.
But the old master’s idea was different; they were all one family living in the same courtyard, and the elderly liked having everyone gather harmoniously.
Being dutiful, Daxton did not insist. Since that incident, Eva Hayes had noticeably restrained herself. Even though dissatisfied with Violet’s daily special meals, she no longer dared to claim them as her own, though she’d occasionally utter sarcastic comments.
Sure enough, seeing the golden chicken leg in front of Violet, she started with the cold satire.
"Oh, niece-in-law, your treatment is truly exceptional; the Lancaster family’s old master is over seventy and eats the same dishes as everyone else daily. You, who are neither old nor young, indulge in special meals—do you manage to swallow that?"
Violet Zimmerman...
A mild-mannered woman, hearing Eva Hayes speak like this, felt instantly embarrassed.
She pushed the chicken leg forward, "Grandpa, please eat."
"Granddaughter-in-law, you should eat; you’re not alone now. Grandpa is just old bones; he won’t be competing with his own great-grandson for food."
When Daxton ordered special meals for Violet, he included a portion for the old master, although the elderly had fewer demands regarding food.
After the old master had spoken, at the table beside them, Gabriel Lancaster quietly nudged his nephew Maximilian who immediately understood and said,
"Great-grandfather, Maximilian wants to eat the big chicken leg!"
"Maximilian, if you want to eat, mom will buy it for you."
Victoria Thornton pulled her son’s arm, feeling remorseful ever since she heard her mother-in-law was punished for fighting over a fish for her.
Now her son was competing for food again, she worried it would upset Daxton Lancaster like it upset her mother-in-law.
A three-year-old child had such straightforward thoughts; whatever was in his mind, and he said it. Maximilian looked at his mother, Victoria, with a grievance.
"You’re lying! Every time aunt gets treats, you trick Maximilian saying you’ll buy them for me, but you’ve never bought them once!"
Victoria Thornton glanced surreptitiously at the table and hurriedly rebuked softly, "Stop messing around, mom said she would buy, and she’ll buy it. You mustn’t compete with aunt for food."
"I won’t! I want the big chicken leg," said the three-year-old, head down and his lips pouting in grievance, his eyes turning red.
Everyone on the main family’s side turned grave. The Lancaster family was communal with their meals; anyone wanting something special would pay for it and have it made by the cook.
Although Violet Zimmerman had her special meals daily, these expenses were borne by the main family while Atlas Lancaster’s family didn’t contribute to any food expenses, not to mention their servants’ costs were covered by Daxton.
Especially knowing this, yet they tried to compete with a pregnant woman for food, which would naturally upset anyone.
Violet Zimmerman picked up the plate with the chicken leg, "Sister-in-law, take the chicken leg to Maximilian."
"You should eat it yourself, children don’t understand; don’t take it to heart."
Victoria Thornton’s personality was nothing like her mother-in-law, Eva Hayes. Self-reliant, she neither accepted charity nor sought benefit from others.
"Why be so ceremonious? If children don’t understand, adults should!" Eva Hayes snatched the chicken leg and, before delivering it to her grandson, shot a glare at Violet Zimmerman.
Daxton cast a cold glance, already looking displeased; the chicken leg he ordered for his wife was taken by an ungrateful meddler!
Noticing Daxton’s displeasure, Violet Zimmerman discreetly tugged on his sleeve and said, "I’m not really in the mood to eat."
The old master sighed, shaking his head, and picked up his chopsticks, "Let’s eat."
The family followed suit, silently consuming dinner as Maximilian munched merrily on the chicken leg, Gabriel grinning maliciously, while the others showed stern expressions.
Joseph Lancaster ate particularly quickly today, finishing a bowl of rice, he dropped his utensils, "I’ve had enough; I’ll go back to study first, enjoy your meal."
He got up and left after speaking.
That night, Violet Zimmerman lay on the bed eating an apple, the untouched chicken leg floating before her eyes. Her husband, Daxton, often brought her treats; he’d occasionally get cured chicken, but never that golden fried chicken leg.
The more she thought about it, the more she wanted it. She reached out and tugged at Daxton, who was reading the newspaper by the bed, "I want a chicken leg; buy me one tomorrow."
