Mr. CEO's Substitute Bride

Chapter 1693 - 1667: As Far as the Eye Can See, Forevermore: Not Pregnant

  • Next Chapter

Violet Zimmerman replaced the servant for Joseph Lancaster, though strictly speaking, it was chosen by Daxton Lancaster.

Violet Zimmerman hasn’t been married for long. As a woman without ambition, despite having the title of Family Head, she didn’t possess much ambition, so she didn’t have much understanding of the Lancaster Family’s affairs.

Daxton Lancaster was different. At eighteen, he was a manager, a man adept at controlling everything, with a precise awareness of every servant in the household.

Moreover, with the most loyal steward, Arthur, he assigned an honest and diligent woman to Joseph Lancaster.

Daxton Lancaster had been away on a business trip for ten days, and coupled with the previous half-month, totaling nearly a month, and Violet Zimmerman hadn’t had her period this month.

Since Daxton Lancaster returned from his trip, he hadn’t instructed Violet Zimmerman to send "midnight snacks" to his younger brother, Joseph Lancaster. Violet felt disheartened about it but didn’t dare show it.

During the day, the men of the Lancaster Family went to work at the company, leaving only the women at home to care for the children. Lorelei Howard came over and took her grandson to the grandfather’s room, saying that the grandfather wished to play with his great-grandson.

Violet Zimmerman was brought along by her mother-in-law, accompanying the elderly with four generations of the family at the grandfather’s house.

Though Robert Lancaster had just turned one year old, the little one was quite clever, with a strong ability to mimic. Violet and her husband had only taught the little one a few times, and he soon learned to call people.

Every time he saw the grandfather, he wrinkled his little nose and happily called out, "Grandpa~"

Once inside with grandma, Robert Lancaster smiled cleverly at the grandfather like he did in the morning. "Grandpa..."

"Hey, my dear darling, hurry up and let grandpa have a hug." The grandfather happily stood up.

"Dad, please sit down first, and then I’ll let Robert give you a hug."

The grandfather, being old and not in the best health, Lorelei worried that an energetic grandson might strain the grandfather’s back.

"Alright, alright!" The grandfather agreed repeatedly, sitting back on the sofa, watching his great-grandson with a wide grin.

Robert Lancaster knew how to make the adults happy. When Lorelei Howard placed him in the grandfather’s arms, he cupped the grandfather’s face, puckered his lips, and made a kissing motion. Such a heartwarming little fellow is beloved by all.

Especially since Robert Lancaster is the grandfather’s direct great-grandson.

The grandfather lovingly stroked the little one’s cheek, his face smiling like a chrysanthemum. "Violet, while grandpa still has some breath, you and Daxton should have another child. Grandpa hasn’t had any big wishes in life, just hoping for a big family full of children and grandchildren."

Violet Zimmerman couldn’t quite understand. Although they say the eldest grandson is the most favored by the elders, logically speaking, the grandfather should love Maximilian Lancaster more, since he’s three years older than her son, and the second daughter-in-law has already had two children, yet the grandfather doesn’t seem particularly happy.

He rarely mentions the two great-grandchildren.

Though she couldn’t comprehend the grandfather’s feelings, Violet Zimmerman agreed dutifully.

"Grandpa, I will." Up to now, she hadn’t had her period this month; there might already be a little life in her belly.

"Good, good," The grandfather watched his great-grandson play on his lap, his face full of kindness, "have them early, so when grandpa passes away, I’ll have more great-grandchildren to mourn."

"Dad, there you go again!" Lorelei Howard scolded, "You’re only in your sixties, always saying such depressing things. If Arthur and the others heard this, how uncomfortable they’d be!"

"Alright, alright, won’t say it again, I’m still waiting for Daxton to give me more great-grandchildren!" The grandfather lovingly looked at his great-grandchild, smiling as he promised.

Not only was the grandfather eager for great-grandchildren, Lorelei Howard was too; it was obvious to everyone that the grandfather favored his grandson Robert Lancaster and seldom mentioned the second branch’s Maximilian Lancaster.

That’s why Lorelei Howard wanted to take advantage of the grandfather’s favoritism towards the main branch and quickly have another grandson. Though there were no benefits, having her grandson valued by the grandfather filled her with pride.

The next day, Lorelei Howard took Violet Zimmerman to the hospital.

After hearing from her son that her daughter-in-law hadn’t had her period this month, she eagerly brought her to the hospital for a check-up.

Urine tests and scans, nothing was overlooked, but after the examination, the doctor said there were no signs of pregnancy.

Lorelei Howard, not accepting defeat, consulted a traditional Chinese doctor, but the result was the same.

Violet Zimmerman hadn’t conceived; the absence of her period was due to nervousness causing menstrual irregularity, and the traditional doctor suggested she take a few boxes of black-bone chicken and white phoenix pills when she returned.

Coming out of the hospital, Lorelei Howard’s expression noticeably improved. Once inside the car, she started complaining.

"Violet, why is it so hard for you to get pregnant! If Daemon Lancaster’s wife hadn’t miscarried once, she’d have had three by now. Yet you, having been married for nearly three years, have only had one!"

Failing to conceive, Violet Zimmerman was also disappointed, but a small voice inside told her that not being pregnant meant she could continue with the younger brother...

Listening to her mother-in-law’s complaints, she felt guilty. She even began doubting her fertility.

According to her second mother-in-law, Daemon Lancaster had taken measures to let Victoria Thornton recuperate after her body was well enough before having their second child.

As Lorelei Howard said, others hadn’t wanted it but succeeded; yet for her, it was more difficult than ascending to the heavens.

With her head lowered, Violet Zimmerman dared not make a sound and softly said, "Mom, I’ll try harder."

Lorelei Howard glanced at her, barely concealing her contempt, "What good is trying? When we get back, I’ll have Arthur send over some deer antler, you can have it cooked for Daxton as soup to nourish the body."

Though the driver was in front, Lorelei Howard didn’t avoid it. Violet Zimmerman’s face burned with embarrassment, forced to say, "Thank you, Mom."

Feeling unpleasant, Lorelei Howard showed no kindness, saying impatiently, "Alright, no need to thank me. If you give me more grandsons, I’ll thank the heavens!"

Back when dating Daxton Lancaster, her mother-in-law Lorelei Howard treated her well, but after marrying and not having more children, Lorelei’s attitude changed.

People of a certain age start longing for grandchildren, not to mention there was a comparison right in front of them.

She constantly urged her second son to hurry and marry Vesper Carter, but the son used work as an excuse, saying they needed to wait two more years.

Unable to do anything about her son, Lorelei Howard vented her frustrations on her daughter-in-law, and Violet Zimmerman, being naturally gentle and not trying to curry favor with her mother-in-law, became the punching bag.

After returning home, Violet Zimmerman pondered for a while and decided she should tell her husband Daxton Lancaster about it, after all, whether to continue "trying" wasn’t for her to decide alone.

After the call connected, Violet Zimmerman told Daxton Lancaster the result of today’s check-up, though his voice didn’t reveal any emotions, his brows furrowed deeply, and his expression turned very somber, as if clouded over.
