My Child and I Married a Billionaire
Chapter 410: Pretend Nothing Happened
Thinking of the humiliation he had suffered last night and the belittling he’d just received before the phone call, Wyatt Wynn, with his temper, felt he should have taught this man a harsh lesson.
But then, the man suddenly dropped to his knees.
Looking at his pathetic, spineless display, Wyatt couldn’t be bothered to deal with him, lest he lower himself to the man’s level.
After a disdainful glance, Wyatt Wynn pulled Faye Fisher down onto the sofa in front of the manager.
"Well? Aren’t you going to check?"
The manager frantically pulled up the security footage.
After a thorough search, he found the culprit.
He then switched between several cameras, following the thief’s path, and discovered that after reaching the bar’s entrance, the man took the cash and valuables from the purse before casually tossing it into a trash can.
"This is the quality of people in Seacliff? Damn it, he actually threw my purse in a trash can! Go find it for me, now!"
Faye Fisher was about to explode with anger.
The manager’s face trembled as he watched her expression.
"M-Miss. It’s not that we won’t look, it’s just... the trash can was emptied by the sanitation workers early this morning. Where am I supposed to find it for you?"
"So you’re saying it can’t be found? Fine. If you can’t find it, you can just shut down this crappy bar..."
Her ID, driver’s license—all of her documents were in that purse. Faye Fisher had no intention of being unable to even board a plane for her trip back.
Seeing that she was not going to be reasonable, the manager, his face still trembling, turned to plead with Wyatt Wynn.
"Young Mr. Wynn, you see..."
Wyatt Wynn, at the end of his rope, kicked the man in the shoulder.
"Talking to you nicely doesn’t work, does it? You have to make me get rough? Was she not clear enough? Are you deaf, or do you just have a death wish? You love talking back this much?"
The manager rolled on the ground twice from the kick, then scrambled back to his feet, bobbing his head frantically.
"I’m sorry, I’m sorry! I was wrong, I was wrong! I’ll go look right now, right now!"
"Miller, go find the sanitation worker in charge of this area and ask where the trash was taken!"
Several security guards scurried out in a panic.
Soon, they returned with an older man in a sanitation worker’s uniform.
The man told them the location, and the manager, again nodding like a chicken pecking at grain, reported to Wyatt Wynn.
"I’ll go look for it right now. Right now. Young Mr. Wynn, if you’ll just wait a moment. Please wait."
As he was about to lead his men away, Faye Fisher stood up.
"I’m going too. I want to personally watch you work."
"Miss, we’re going to a garbage dump. It’s filthy and it stinks..."
"That’s my business! As if it could be filthier or stink more than your mouth? Let’s go!"
Wyatt Wynn drove Faye Fisher, following their car. After a series of twists and turns, they arrived at a huge garbage transfer station.
The moment they stepped out, they were assaulted by a pervasive stench and mountains of trash.
The manager questioned several people before pinpointing the approximate location of the trash from their area. He then led a few security guards up onto the garbage pile.
Fighting the stench and the filth, they dug and sifted through the refuse. An unknown amount of time later, one of them came running over, holding up a small, silver purse.
"Miss, is this it?"
Faye Fisher looked at her purse, which she had bought for hundreds of thousands, now in such a state, and gritted her teeth.
"Go wash it for me."
The manager hurried to rinse the purse off and presented it to her respectfully.
Faye Fisher opened it to find that, apart from her phone, cash, and a necklace, all her other documents were still inside.
"You have to find the thief as soon as possible and send him to jail! That necklace of mine was worth hundreds of thousands! And this purse was over three hundred thousand!"
"Rest assured, Miss, rest assured. Leave it to us. We’ll have a result for you before nightfall."
Faye Fisher and Wyatt Wynn returned to the car.
Seeing her purse was ruined, Wyatt Wynn said, "I’ll take you to buy a new one."
Faye Fisher knew he had money, but she refused.
"Forget it. Let’s get a replacement SIM card and a new phone first. This wretched Seacliff has made me so furious. I’m never coming back, and I certainly can’t be bothered to contribute to their GDP. I’m not buying anything."
"My phone’s been off for so long. I’m not worried about anyone else, just Brandon Jacobs’s mother..."
Wyatt Wynn took her to a mobile carrier’s store. She handed over her ID, and the replacement card was issued quickly. Then, the two of them went to pick out a new phone.
She put the SIM card in, and sure enough, Faye Fisher saw several missed calls and multiple messages.
Some were from her own mother, and some were from Brandon Jacobs’s mother.
With Wyatt Wynn right there, Faye Fisher called both of them back. The content of both conversations was basically identical.
They asked if she and her husband were having fun and reminded them to enjoy themselves and stay safe.
Although there was nothing unusual in their words, the fact that both women had said almost the exact same thing made Faye Fisher suspicious.
"Mom, be honest with me. Did something happen?"
When Faye Fisher’s father was younger, he had worked his way up to a fairly high position in Coalmont. But with the decline of the coal industry in recent years, an increase in crooked businessmen, and several accidents, his career had taken a downturn.
At its worst, if it weren’t for Brandon Jacobs’s father’s help, he wouldn’t have even been able to keep his position.
Afterward, he barely managed to hold a dead-end government post, just enough to make a living.
After retiring, the couple’s only hope was for Faye Fisher to have a good life, and they had high expectations for her marriage.
After Faye Fisher asked her question, her mother sighed.
"You two are newlyweds. I shouldn’t be bringing this up and spoiling your fun, but... Faye, your father-in-law’s condition has worsened. He was hospitalized last night. At a time like this, having one more person by his side can help take care of him and also give your mother-in-law some emotional support. I wanted you to come back, but your mother-in-law was adamant that you shouldn’t..."
When Faye Fisher heard this, her heart sank.
The reasons she had married Brandon Jacobs were partly for her parents, partly because of Wyatt Wynn, and partly because of Brandon’s parents.
They were simply too good to her, truly treating her like their own daughter.
Brandon Jacobs’s mother, in particular, was so gentle and considerate that Faye Fisher felt it would be a betrayal not to be her daughter-in-law.
And in front of them, she had always been obedient and sensible.
Hearing that Brandon Jacobs’s father was seriously ill made her very sad.
"I understand, Mom. You’re right. For us to be out having fun at a time like this makes us seem too heartless. I’ll come back as soon as I can."
"I’m glad you’re so understanding, Faye. You and Brandon are still young. You have your whole lives ahead of you, and there will be plenty of time to travel later. Right now, your in-laws need you."
Wyatt Wynn, who was standing nearby, heard the entire phone call clearly and frowned.
Although Brandon Jacobs’s father was meticulous and had always been cold and dispassionate toward the younger generation, he had maintained a good reputation his entire life and had never done anything outrageous. Wyatt Wynn still respected him.
And now, the man was gravely ill, yet he and Faye Fisher had...
’No matter what happened in the past, now that I’ve calmed down and returned to reality, I feel deeply ashamed of what I did last night.’
"Faye..."
Before he could get the words out, Faye Fisher seemed to guess what he was thinking and forced a smile at him.
"I know what you want to say. I was the one who initiated everything last night. I just wanted to figure some things out. Now that my goal is achieved and what needed to be cleared up is clear, I have no regrets. So let’s not see each other again. Let’s just pretend last night never happened."
"..."
"Come on, take me back. I have no idea where the hell Brandon Jacobs has gone off to, but I hope he’ll at least answer my call."
