My Disciple's Growth Gives Me 10,000x Returns

Chapter 30 — Some Things Should Not Be Cut

  • Next Chapter

The Severed Barrier screamed.

Not cracked.

Not trembled.

Screamed.

Across the Immortal Realm, ancient ascension altars ignited one after another.

Celestial Registry Palace.

Forgotten sects.

Ancient clans.

Ruined temples whose names had vanished thousands of years ago.

Even altars buried beneath mountains answered.

One message burned across all of them.

I FOUND THE ROAD.

Then—

THE ONE YOU CUT.

Immortal Emperor Taihuang stared at the black fragment writhing inside his palm.

For the first time in centuries, his cultivation erupted without restraint.

The Celestial Registry Palace groaned.

Space collapsed around his fingers.

Golden Imperial Dao crushed downward.

The black mouth flattened.

Twisted.

Then laughed.

"Little emperor."

Taihuang's eyes became cold.

"Seal the palace."

Ji Wushang moved immediately.

"All nine layers?"

"All."

Nine enormous formations awakened.

Golden barriers enclosed the palace.

Space locked.

Karma froze.

Soul transmission ceased.

Every external communication channel shut down.

The Mouth laughed harder.

"Still afraid."

Taihuang closed his hand.

This time—

he did not crush it.

Golden characters wrapped around the fragment.

One hundred.

One thousand.

Ten thousand.

The black liquid stopped moving.

Ji Wushang stared.

"Your Majesty..."

"Do not touch it."

"I wasn't planning to."

"Good."

Taihuang looked toward the sky.

The Severed Barrier was no longer merely unstable.

Something was pulling on it.

From their side.

Ji Wushang followed his gaze.

His expression changed.

"Someone is attempting descent."

"Many someones."

"Who?"

Taihuang's face darkened.

"Idiots."

Across the Immortal Realm—

opportunity had arrived.

That was what many believed.

For eight thousand years, the Mortal Realm had been severed.

Ancient records spoke of lost inheritances.

Buried Dao territories.

Pre-Severance bloodlines.

Unclaimed lower-world resources.

Sword Tombs.

Forgotten paths.

And now—

the barrier had weakened.

A message had announced a road.

Some Immortals saw danger.

Others saw treasure.

The second group moved faster.

At the Scarlet Heaven Sect, three True Immortals activated an ancient descent platform.

At the Northern Star Palace, an Immortal King tore open a spatial channel.

At the Divine Beast Court, two elders awakened a realm-crossing artifact.

Elsewhere—

hidden families brought out treasures untouched for millennia.

Everyone wanted to be first.

No one asked why the road had opened.

Then the first True Immortal stepped into a descending passage.

He smiled.

Below—

a lower realm waited.

Then the passage turned black.

His smile vanished.

Something whispered his name.

The Immortal screamed.

The channel collapsed.

Nothing returned.

At the Northern Star Palace—

the Immortal King stopped halfway through his descent.

A mouth appeared on the spatial wall.

"Found you."

The Immortal King severed the passage himself.

He returned missing one arm.

The arm continued descending without him.

At the Divine Beast Court—

their realm-crossing artifact cracked before activation.

Black liquid leaked from inside.

The elders ran.

Correct decision.

Across the Immortal Realm—

descent attempts became disasters.

Taihuang received the reports within breaths.

Ji Wushang read the final jade slip.

"Seven failed passages."

"Nine," Taihuang corrected.

Two more communication talismans shattered.

Ji Wushang looked at them.

"...Nine."

"Deaths?"

"Unknown."

"Then assume dead."

Taihuang walked toward the central altar.

"Send an Imperial Decree."

Ji Wushang prepared the transmission.

Taihuang spoke.

"All private realm-crossing formations are forbidden."

"All descent routes are to be sealed."

"No Immortal is to approach the Severed Barrier without Celestial Registry authorization."

Ji Wushang hesitated.

"Some factions won't obey."

"I know."

"What if they attempt passage anyway?"

Taihuang looked at him.

"Then the barrier can educate them."

Ji Wushang lowered his head.

"Understood."

Taihuang turned toward the sealed Mouth.

Something had changed.

Eight thousand years of silence.

Now everyone was moving at once.

That was rarely a good sign.

Cloudveil Peak.

The sky remained blue.

Calm.

A few clouds drifted past.

Lu Chen was helping Mo Tian sit against an ancient stone pillar.

The Fourth Disciple's reconstructed body remained unstable.

Alive.

But far from recovered.

Guest Nine stood several steps away.

Xuankong and Gu Jian stared upward.

Lin Yue held Moonfrost.

Jian Wuchen stood beside her.

Then the system appeared.

[Realm Boundary instability increasing.]

[Multiple higher-realm passage attempts detected.]

Shen Yuan frowned.

"Successful?"

[No complete crossings detected.]

Good.

Then—

[Correction.]

Of course.

[Partial foreign matter detected in Mortal Realm.]

A map appeared.

Far north.

Thousands of kilometers away.

[Northern Desolate Province.]

[Classification unavailable.]

Guest Nine looked at him.

"Something crossed?"

"Partially."

"What?"

"Unknown."

Mo Tian coughed.

"Burn it."

Xuankong looked at him.

"You've been awake for less than an hour."

"I've already contributed."

"By recommending fire?"

"Yes."

"It might be an Immortal."

Mo Tian shrugged.

"Then burn him politely."

Lu Chen nodded.

"That sounds reasonable."

Lin Yue looked at him.

Lu reconsidered.

"Moderately reasonable."

Better.

Jian Wuchen suddenly grabbed his chest.

The Sword Heart inside him struck once.

Hard.

The First Key emerged.

Then the Seventh.

Both hovered before him.

Gu Jian immediately stepped forward.

"What happened?"

Jian didn't answer.

The two keys rotated.

A projection appeared.

Seven positions.

Two illuminated.

First.

Seventh.

The remaining five were dark.

Then—

one flickered.

Once.

Twice.

A fifth position lit.

Xuankong's expression changed.

"Fifth."

Gu Jian stared.

"The Fifth Key."

The projection shifted.

Its location appeared.

Not Mortal Realm.

Above.

Beyond the Severed Barrier.

"Immortal Realm," Xuankong whispered.

Then the Fifth Key flashed.

One line appeared.

HELP.

Silence.

A second followed.

GUARDIAN COMPROMISED.

Guest Nine's expression changed.

Mo Tian went completely still.

"Fifth Sister."

Everyone looked at him.

Shen Yuan did not ask for a name.

Mo Tian's memories were fragmented.

Forcing them had already hurt him once.

"What do you remember?"

Mo Tian closed his eyes.

"Fire."

Pause.

"A furnace."

Another pause.

"She hated swords."

Gu Jian frowned.

"Everyone hated swords after living with Master."

Xuankong nodded.

"Especially after he started leaving them on chairs."

Guest Nine looked at him.

"He did that deliberately."

"We know."

Mo Tian almost smiled.

Then his expression tightened.

"Alchemy."

The fifth figure from Cloudveil's ancient recording.

The one holding a furnace.

Shen Yuan's eyes narrowed.

Another ancient path.

Another fragment of Cloudveil's history.

That was all.

He did not know who currently walked such a path.

He did not know whether Cloudveil would ever gather one.

And after Ji Cang's recording, Shen Yuan had no intention of searching for people merely because they resembled the dead.

Cloudveil sought divergence.

Not replacements.

The system remained silent.

Good.

Jian's projection flashed again.

HELP.

Then—

DO NOT LET FIFTH OPEN.

The Fifth position vanished.

Gu Jian's face hardened.

"Something found her."

Xuankong stared upward.

"Or something she guards is waking."

Far above—

beneath an ancient mountain covered in medicinal forests—

a woman opened her eyes.

NovelPhoenix is the home of this novel. Visit there to read the original and support the author.

She appeared young.

Green-gold robes.

Black hair.

A small furnace floated beside her.

Seven chains crossed the chamber.

Six remained intact.

One had broken.

In her palm—

a sword-shaped key burned.

Fifth.

Across from her stood twelve Immortals.

None were alive anymore.

Their bodies remained standing.

Black mouths covered their faces.

The woman breathed slowly.

One corpse spoke.

"OPEN."

She tightened her grip around the Fifth Key.

"No."

Another corpse smiled.

"YOUR BROTHER RETURNED."

Her eyes changed.

"Which one?"

All twelve mouths answered together.

"NINE."

The woman stared.

Then laughed.

The mouths stopped.

"You really don't know us."

Her furnace opened.

Green fire filled the chamber.

"Nine would sooner erase their own shadow than announce a return."

The corpses twitched.

Her smile vanished.

"You're not speaking for my sibling."

The furnace erupted.

Twelve bodies burned.

Eleven mouths screamed.

The twelfth vanished.

A black thread entered the broken chain.

The Fifth Key shook.

The woman's expression changed.

"No."

Something beneath the mountain moved.

Not a creature.

Not exactly.

A pressure.

An opening.

She drove one hand into the formation.

Blood ran down her wrist.

Five fingers closed around the damaged mechanism.

"Stay."

The mountain shook.

Something beneath it laughed.

She looked toward the distant boundary between realms.

"Third."

Another chain cracked.

"Seventh."

Her lips curved faintly.

"If either of you idiots survived..."

She pushed more power into the seal.

"...now would be a useful time to prove it."

Cloudveil Peak.

Xuankong sneezed.

Everyone looked at him.

"What?"

Mo Tian smiled.

"Nothing."

Xuankong narrowed his eyes.

"You remembered something."

"No."

"You smiled."

"I do that."

"Rarely."

Gu Jian ignored them.

"The Fifth Key's signal disappeared."

Jian shook his head.

"No."

Everyone turned.

He still had his eyes closed.

"It's faint."

"But it's there."

Gu Jian stepped closer.

"Can you reach it?"

"Maybe."

Shen Yuan immediately spoke.

"Don't."

Jian opened his eyes.

"Master."

"Your Sword Foundation isn't stable enough to push through a realm boundary."

"I know."

"Then don't."

Jian looked back at the keys.

"But someone asked for help."

That answer silenced Shen Yuan for a moment.

Then Gu Jian spoke.

"You don't need to cross."

Jian looked at him.

Gu Jian frowned.

Fragments of memory surfaced.

"The Covenant."

Guest Nine looked over.

Gu Jian continued slowly.

"It wasn't only for identifying Guardians."

"It could transmit warnings."

"Authority recognition."

"Seal damage."

"Messages."

Jian looked at the First Key.

"So I answer."

"If it recognizes you."

That was the problem.

Jian possessed the First Key.

He had temporarily carried Seventh Authority.

But he was not one of Ji Cang's ancient Guardians.

Nor should he become one simply because history wanted a replacement.

Jian sat.

"Teach me."

Gu Jian stared.

"I barely remember."

"Then teach me what you do remember."

A pause.

Then Gu Jian smiled.

"Fine."

Shen Yuan stepped back.

Lin Yue noticed.

"Master?"

"I'm watching."

That surprised her.

It surprised him slightly too.

He could probably force the connection open.

He could use Heaven-Severing Dao.

Cut through interference.

Follow the Fifth Key.

Perhaps even open a path toward the Immortal Realm.

But—

he did not understand the Guardian network.

He did not understand the Fifth Seal.

He did not understand what DO NOT LET FIFTH OPEN actually meant.

There was a dangerous habit forming.

See a knot.

Cut it.

Useful.

Efficient.

And increasingly reckless.

Shen Yuan folded his arms.

"Continue."

Gu Jian placed two fingers against the Seventh Key.

The original Covenant Mark appeared.

Seven swords arranged around one central circle.

One severing line crossed part of the formation.

No two outer marks.

No foreign additions.

"This isn't primarily a weapon," Gu Jian said.

"It's recognition."

The Seventh Key responded to him instantly.

Not because of cultivation.

Because he was Gu Jian.

Seventh Guardian.

"The Key is authority."

"The Covenant knows who holds that authority."

Jian frowned.

"Then why does the First Key respond to me?"

Gu Jian looked at him.

"That's something you need to discover."

Jian reached toward it.

Sword Intent entered.

The First Key rejected him.

Blood ran from his fingertips.

Lin Yue moved.

Shen Yuan raised one hand.

Wait.

Jian tried again.

Harder.

The Key struck back.

His Sword Heart shook.

Gu Jian frowned.

"Stop."

Jian gritted his teeth.

"Why?"

"Because you're trying to conquer it."

"It's a sword."

"No."

"It looks like one."

"Master made everything look like swords."

Xuankong nodded.

"Cups."

Mo Tian added:

"Door handles."

Guest Nine:

"One spoon."

Gu Jian frowned.

"That spoon was useful."

"It cut the table."

"Also useful."

Jian closed his eyes.

"I regret asking."

Shen Yuan smiled.

A little.

Jian withdrew his Sword Intent.

Stopped pushing.

Stopped trying to reproduce Ji Cang.

Stopped trying to imitate Gu Jian.

Stopped trying to make the First Key obey.

He simply held out his palm.

One breath.

Five.

Ten.

Nothing.

Lu Chen whispered:

"Is it working?"

Lin Yue answered:

"Quiet."

Twenty breaths.

Thirty.

Then Jian sent one thought through his Sword Heart.

I AM JIAN WUCHEN.

The First Key trembled.

I AM NOT YOUR FIRST GUARDIAN.

Gu Jian's eyes widened.

The Key descended slightly.

I DO NOT KNOW YOUR OLD COVENANT.

Closer.

BUT SOMEONE ASKED FOR HELP.

The First Key touched his palm.

The projection exploded open.

Seven positions.

First.

Seventh.

Then—

Fifth.

Faint.

Distant.

But there.

Jian's breathing changed.

Gu Jian smiled.

"There."

The Fifth Key pulsed.

Jian could feel something.

Heat.

Pain.

Pressure.

A woman holding something closed.

He could not see her.

Could not fight beside her.

Could not cross.

But he could answer.

The Covenant waited.

Jian looked at Gu Jian.

"What should I say?"

Gu Jian shook his head.

"That's your decision."

Jian looked at the distant point.

Then sent:

CLOUDVEIL HEARD YOU.

Silence.

One breath.

Two.

Five.

Then—

WHO?

Jian's expression became strange.

Mo Tian laughed.

"That sounds like her."

Jian sent:

FIRST KEY BEARER.

Immediate response.

YOU ARE NOT FIRST.

Gu Jian laughed this time.

Jian replied:

CORRECT.

Pause.

Then:

SEVENTH GUARDIAN LIVES.

The Fifth Key froze.

Jian continued.

THIRD LIVES.

Xuankong looked away.

FOURTH LIVES.

Mo Tian closed his eyes.

The response arrived.

LIAR.

Mo Tian smiled.

"Tell her she still owes me a furnace."

Jian transmitted it.

Silence.

Then—

FOURTH?

Mo Tian's smile faded.

For a moment—

eight thousand years showed on his face.

"Tell her..."

He paused.

"...I'm sorry."

Jian sent it.

The Fifth Key shook.

Then:

IDIOT.

Mo Tian laughed.

"Yes."

The connection strengthened.

Only slightly.

Enough.

DO NOT CROSS.

Then:

FIFTH SEAL DAMAGED.

Another message.

NOT PRISON.

Pause.

BOUNDARY WOUND.

Guest Nine's expression changed.

Xuankong stood.

Gu Jian became completely still.

Jian sent:

EXPLAIN.

The response took longer.

CANNOT.

Then:

LISTENER SEARCHING THROUGH ASCENSION ROADS.

Another.

SEAL STILL HOLDS.

Then—

FOR NOW.

Shen Yuan finally spoke.

"Ask what she needs."

Jian did.

The answer came quickly.

TIME.

Nothing else.

Not rescue.

Not reinforcements.

Not another Guardian.

Time.

Shen Yuan looked at Guest Nine.

"If the Fifth Seal opens?"

Guest Nine hesitated.

Then:

"I don't know."

Shen Yuan looked at Xuankong.

"I don't remember."

Gu Jian:

"Neither do I."

Mo Tian slowly shook his head.

"Fragments. Nothing reliable."

Shen Yuan stared at them.

Oddly—

that was useful.

For once, no one had a convenient answer.

No ancient recording explained everything.

No memory solved the mystery.

They simply didn't know.

Jian received another message.

DO NOT GATHER SEVEN.

Gu Jian's expression changed.

Ji Cang's command.

Do not gather Seven until Heaven bleeds.

Then:

CLOSE NETWORK.

Jian frowned.

"If I close it, we lose contact."

Gu Jian nodded.

"Yes."

"She asked for help."

"And now she's telling you what helping means."

Jian stared at the Fifth position.

Everything in him wanted to keep the connection open.

Instead—

he closed his hand.

The First Key dimmed.

The Seventh followed.

The Fifth position disappeared.

Connection closed.

Not by Shen Yuan.

By Jian.

Because the person on the other side had asked him to.

The system chimed.

[Disciple Jian Wuchen has gained deeper understanding of authority-based Sword Dao structures.]

[Sword Heart synchronization increased.]

[First Key compatibility increased.]

[Sword Foundation stability increased.]

No giant breakthrough.

No ancient inheritance falling from the sky.

Just progress.

Earned.

Gu Jian studied him.

"You listened."

Jian frowned.

"Was I not supposed to?"

Gu Jian smiled.

"Most swordsmen don't."

Shen Yuan approved.

Then the system displayed:

[Higher-realm Guardian crisis remains active.]

[Host intervention theoretically possible.]

Shen Yuan stared.

Another line appeared.

[Structural understanding insufficient.]

That was new.

"Explain."

[Heaven-Severing Dao operates upon relationships perceived by Host.]

Shen Yuan's expression sharpened.

[Accurate severance requires accurate identification of the relationship being severed.]

There it was.

"Meaning?"

[Severing a misunderstood relationship may produce unintended consequences.]

Silence.

Guest Nine looked at him.

"What did it say?"

Shen Yuan did not answer immediately.

He looked upward.

The Fifth Seal.

Boundary wound.

Guardian network.

Ascension roads.

The Listener.

Too many pieces.

Not enough understanding.

He could still go.

He was strong enough.

That was no longer the question.

Strength wasn't information.

Finally, Shen Yuan said:

"We stay."

Gu Jian looked surprised.

Xuankong even more so.

"You aren't going?"

"No."

"But you could."

"Probably."

Xuankong stared.

Shen Yuan looked at him.

"That's becoming a bad reason."

For once—

Xuankong had no reply.

The decision lasted seventeen breaths.

Then the Fifth Key screamed.

Not through the Covenant.

Through Cloudveil itself.

Guest Nine's face went white.

Mo Tian tried to stand.

Gu Jian's Seventh Authority activated automatically.

Jian's First Key erupted from his chest.

The system flashed red.

[Fifth Guardian Seal integrity rapidly decreasing.]

41%.

36%.

29%.

Jian stood.

"Master."

Shen Yuan stared at the numbers.

24%.

Guest Nine whispered:

"Something changed."

19%.

Shen Yuan looked upward.

The Fifth Guardian had asked for time.

Apparently—

she had run out.

"Jian."

"Yes."

"Keep the First and Seventh Keys here."

Jian's expression changed.

"You're going."

"Yes."

"You just said—"

"I know."

"Then why?"

Shen Yuan looked at the collapsing number.

14%.

"Because now the alternative is letting it fail without knowing what happens."

Not ideal.

Just necessary.

Jian clenched his jaw.

"Let me come."

"No."

"Master—"

"Your job is here."

Shen Yuan pointed at the First Key.

"If I make the wrong decision up there, I need someone here who can still communicate with the Guardian network."

Jian stopped.

That was different.

Not dismissal.

Responsibility.

Shen Yuan looked at Lin Yue.

"Cloudveil."

She nodded.

"Understood."

Then Lu Chen raised his hand.

"No."

"I didn't say anything."

"No."

Lu lowered it.

"Fair."

Chen An appeared.

Storage ring in hand.

Shen Yuan stared.

"What is that?"

"Food."

"Chen An."

"Tea."

"Chen An."

"Medicine."

Shen Yuan sighed.

"How did you know?"

"You have the expression."

"What expression?"

"The one before leaving the mountain to do something unreasonable."

Everyone looked at Shen Yuan.

Lin Yue nodded.

Jian too.

Lu Chen very enthusiastically.

Traitors.

Chen An handed him the ring.

"How long?"

"Hopefully not long."

"That means you don't know."

"Correct."

Chen An nodded.

"I'll prepare dinner anyway."

Shen Yuan accepted the ring.

Good man.

The passage Shen Yuan opened was narrow.

Deliberately.

He did not cut the Severed Barrier itself.

He followed the Fifth Key's fading connection.

A relationship he could perceive.

A relationship he understood.

At least enough.

The Void Sovereign Mantle activated.

[Dimensional anchoring active.]

[Cross-realm instability compensation active.]

Before stepping through, Shen Yuan looked at Jian.

"Don't open the Covenant unless she contacts you."

Jian nodded.

"And if I don't return?"

Lin Yue looked at him.

Lu Chen stopped smiling.

Shen Yuan paused.

Then:

"Ask Chen An where I keep the good tea."

Chen An frowned.

"I already know."

"Of course you do."

Shen Yuan stepped through.

Between realms—

there was no sky.

No earth.

Only pressure.

Dead ascension roads floated through broken space.

Ancient bridges.

Collapsed gates.

Formation platforms.

Thousands of paths.

Most severed.

Some deliberately.

Some decayed.

Some—

damaged in ways Shen Yuan did not understand.

He stopped beside one road.

A large section was simply missing.

The system attempted analysis.

[Structural classification unavailable.]

Shen Yuan did not touch it.

Progress.

Then a corpse floated past.

True Immortal.

Recently dead.

No wounds.

No soul.

Its mouth was black.

The corpse opened its eyes.

"SHEN—"

Shen Yuan flicked it away.

It disappeared into broken space.

He did not follow.

More progress.

The Fifth Key's signal strengthened.

Ahead—

green fire burned.

The Fifth Guardian was bleeding.

Every chain beneath the medicinal mountain had cracked.

A black wound hung behind her.

Hands reached through.

Not physical hands.

Ideas trying to become physical.

The Fifth Guardian held the Key against the formation.

Her knees trembled.

Still—

when Shen Yuan stepped onto the mountain—

she glared at him.

"I told you not to come."

"Yes."

"Was the message unclear?"

"No."

"Then why are you here?"

"The seal reached fourteen percent."

She cursed.

"Fair."

One of the hands lunged toward her.

Shen Yuan raised two fingers.

Then stopped.

The Fifth Guardian shouted:

"What are you doing?"

"Understanding it."

The hand came closer.

She stared at him.

"Could you understand faster?"

"Probably."

"Please do."

Shen Yuan inspected.

The system analyzed.

[Foreign interaction structure detected.]

[Relationship: Unwritten entity → boundary wound → Immortal Realm.]

That was clearer.

Shen Yuan cut.

The hand vanished.

Only the hand.

Not the wound.

Not the seal.

Not the entire relationship.

The Fifth Guardian noticed.

"You could have done more."

"Yes."

"Why didn't you?"

"Trying something new."

"What?"

"Restraint."

She stared.

Then laughed despite the blood on her face.

"Third Brother would like you."

"People keep saying things like that."

The seal dropped.

11%.

Shen Yuan looked at the formation.

"Explain it."

The Fifth Guardian blinked.

"What?"

"The seal."

"We don't have time."

"Then explain quickly."

Another hand emerged.

Shen Yuan cut its connection.

Only that connection.

"Why does the wound exist?"

"I don't know."

"What does the seal do?"

"Anchors it."

"Why?"

"I don't know."

"What happens if the anchor breaks?"

"I don't know."

Shen Yuan looked at her.

"You've guarded this for eight thousand years."

"I was given a key and told not to let it open!"

Fair.

Ji Cang had apparently believed in concise instructions.

"Can it be closed?"

"We tried."

"Who?"

"Master."

That mattered.

"And?"

"He couldn't."

Very important.

Shen Yuan stopped.

If Ji Cang—

the person who created Severance—

couldn't simply close the wound...

Then Shen Yuan probably shouldn't casually cut it.

The system flashed.

[Fifth Guardian Seal integrity: 9%.]

The Guardian looked at him.

"If you have something clever, now would be excellent."

Shen Yuan studied the wound.

The seal did not merely block it.

It anchored it.

Why anchor something dangerous?

Why not let it drift?

Why keep it in one known location?

Unless—

the location mattered.

Or knowing where it was mattered.

Shen Yuan's eyes narrowed.

"What happens if I remove its connection to this mountain?"

The Fifth Guardian went still.

"I don't know."

Not good enough.

The system appeared.

[Conceptual severance theoretically possible.]

"Consequence?"

[Unknown.]

There.

Old Shen Yuan might have cut it anyway.

Current Shen Yuan stared at the word.

Unknown.

Strength wasn't the issue.

Information was.

He lowered his hand.

The Fifth Guardian looked surprised.

"You're not doing it?"

"No."

"Good."

The seal dropped.

7%.

She looked at it.

"Bad."

A golden light erupted above the mountain.

Immortal Emperor Taihuang descended.

Ji Wushang beside him.

Taihuang saw Shen Yuan.

Then the Fifth Guardian.

Then the wound.

His face changed.

"Senior Yao."

The woman looked up.

Despite everything—

she smiled.

"Little Huang."

Ji Wushang looked away immediately.

Shen Yuan became interested.

Taihuang did not.

"Can the Severance Array reinforce the Fifth Seal?"

"No."

"Why?"

"Different system."

Taihuang looked at Shen Yuan.

"Can you close it?"

"Unknown."

That answer surprised everyone.

Taihuang stared.

"You don't know?"

"No."

Senior Yao laughed.

"I like him more now."

Taihuang ignored her.

Shen Yuan pointed at the formation.

"What do you know about the wound?"

Taihuang's expression darkened.

"Less than I should."

"Useful."

"I know the Fifth Seal must remain anchored."

Shen Yuan became still.

"Why?"

"That knowledge was removed from the Imperial inheritance."

"By whom?"

"Unknown."

Of course.

"But one warning remained."

Taihuang looked directly at him.

"Never move the Fifth Wound."

Silence.

Senior Yao slowly looked at Shen Yuan.

"You were thinking about moving it?"

"No."

"You were."

"Briefly."

She closed her eyes.

"Good thing you asked questions."

Yes.

It was.

5%.

Taihuang activated Imperial Dao.

Senior Yao reinforced the Key.

Ji Wushang stabilized the outer formation.

Shen Yuan inspected the broken chains.

Seven.

One had failed first.

The black thread from the Mouth had entered that break.

Not the wound itself.

The chain.

There.

The seal wasn't failing because the wound had become stronger.

Something had corrupted one of the anchors.

Shen Yuan looked at Senior Yao.

"The broken chain."

"What?"

"That's the problem."

He inspected it.

[Foreign causal structure detected.]

[Function: Convert Guardian authority into opening authority.]

There.

Someone had inverted part of the seal.

Shen Yuan finally understood the relationship.

Not:

wound → mountain.

Not:

Listener → world.

But:

foreign causal structure → Fifth Guardian authority.

A parasite using her own power to open what she was trying to close.

That—

he could cut.

Shen Yuan raised two fingers.

Taihuang looked at him.

"Certain?"

"Enough."

"That's reassuring."

"It shouldn't be."

Shen Yuan cut.

The black thread snapped.

Senior Yao screamed.

The Fifth Key erupted.

Green-gold light filled the mountain.

For one terrifying moment—

the seal dropped to:

1%.

Then—

stopped.

Senior Yao fell to one knee.

The black wound convulsed.

Every hand disappeared.

The opening began shrinking.

Not closing.

Returning to its prior state.

4%.

11%.

19%.

Taihuang's eyes widened.

32%.

Senior Yao laughed.

Weakly.

47%.

Then—

61%.

The mountain stopped shaking.

Silence.

The wound remained.

Small.

Stable.

Guarded.

Exactly where it had been.

Shen Yuan exhaled.

Good.

He had cut the parasite.

Not the structure he didn't understand.

That felt—

strangely satisfying.

Then the system appeared.

[Conceptual severance successful.]

[Foreign causal inversion removed.]

[Fifth Guardian Seal stabilized.]

Pause.

Then:

[Heaven-Severing Dao comprehension updated.]

Shen Yuan raised an eyebrow.

[Observation:]

Heaven-Severing Dao does not grant omniscience.

Shen Yuan stared.

Senior Yao looked at him.

"What?"

"Nothing."

The system continued.

[Host may sever relationships Host can accurately perceive and define.]

[Incorrect identification may cause unintended consequences.]

[Greater conceptual scale increases consequence of error.]

There.

A limitation.

A reasonable one.

A useful one.

Shen Yuan smiled faintly.

Taihuang misunderstood.

"You find this amusing?"

"Somewhat."

"You nearly entered an ancient boundary wound."

"I didn't."

"That is a very low standard."

Also fair.

Senior Yao sat against the broken formation.

Her breathing gradually stabilized.

Shen Yuan looked at the Fifth Key.

"Can you leave?"

"No."

Not yet.

The wound still required a Guardian.

Good.

That solved another problem.

Senior Yao would not suddenly move into Cloudveil and become another permanent ancient expert.

"Can the seal be repaired?"

"Probably."

"How long?"

"Years."

Taihuang spoke.

"The Celestial Registry will supply resources."

Senior Yao looked at him.

"I don't trust the Registry."

"Neither do I."

She paused.

"Good answer."

Taihuang sighed.

Some relationships apparently survived millennia.

Shen Yuan prepared to leave.

Senior Yao looked at him.

"Wait."

He stopped.

"My brothers."

"Alive."

"All of them?"

"No."

Her expression changed.

Shen Yuan corrected:

"The ones currently on Cloudveil are Xuankong, Gu Jian, Mo Tian and Guest Nine."

Senior Yao froze.

"Nine?"

"Yes."

Her hand tightened around the Fifth Key.

For a moment—

she looked like she might abandon eight thousand years of responsibility and walk through the barrier herself.

Then she looked at the wound.

She couldn't.

Not yet.

"Tell them..."

She stopped.

Too much.

Eight thousand years.

No sentence was enough.

Finally:

"Tell them Fifth is still alive."

Shen Yuan nodded.

"I will."

"And tell Fourth he still owes me a furnace."

Shen Yuan looked at her.

"He said you owed him one."

Senior Yao's eyes narrowed.

"That liar."

Good.

Definitely family.

Taihuang walked beside Shen Yuan toward the edge of the mountain.

"You're returning to the Mortal Realm?"

"Yes."

"You could remain."

"No."

Taihuang looked at him.

"The Immortal Realm has resources the Mortal Realm cannot provide."

"I have resources."

"Techniques."

"I have techniques."

"Dao inheritances."

"Too many."

Taihuang became silent.

Shen Yuan continued walking.

Then Taihuang asked:

"Why go back?"

Shen Yuan thought of Cloudveil.

Lin Yue.

Jian Wuchen.

Lu Chen.

One disciple who had not properly entered Qi Refining.

One whose sword path was only beginning.

One carrying an Immortal sword whose spirit still slept.

His mountain was full of ancient mysteries.

And somehow—

his disciples were still beginners.

That realization was mildly embarrassing.

"I have work."

Taihuang looked at him.

"What work?"

"Teaching."

Taihuang stopped.

Shen Yuan opened the passage.

Then looked back.

"Keep your Immortals from descending."

Taihuang's expression became dry.

"Was that an order?"

"Suggestion."

"It sounded like an order."

"Useful suggestion."

Shen Yuan stepped through.

Cloudveil Peak.

The passage opened.

Lu Chen was the first to notice.

"Master!"

Lin Yue stood.

Jian Wuchen opened his eyes.

Gu Jian rose.

Xuankong appeared from the courtyard.

Mo Tian nearly fell trying to stand.

Guest Nine did not move.

But their eyes locked on Shen Yuan.

He stepped onto the mountain.

Alone.

Good.

No new ancient expert.

No cosmic prisoner.

No Immortal Emperor following him home.

Chen An approached.

"Peak Master."

"Yes?"

"Dinner is ready."

Shen Yuan looked at him.

"Excellent."

Everyone stared.

Xuankong finally asked:

"That's it?"

"What?"

"You crossed the Severed Barrier."

"Yes."

"Entered the Immortal Realm."

"Briefly."

"Found Fifth."

"Yes."

"Then came back."

"Correct."

Xuankong looked offended by the simplicity.

"What happened?"

Shen Yuan tossed him a jade slip.

"She said she's alive."

Mo Tian grabbed it first.

"And?"

"She says you owe her a furnace."

Mo Tian stood.

"She owes me!"

Good.

Very alive.

Gu Jian asked:

"The seal?"

"Stable."

"Listener?"

"Still a problem."

"Taihuang?"

"Still Taihuang."

Guest Nine looked at Shen Yuan carefully.

"You didn't cut the wound."

"No."

Their expression changed.

"You could have tried."

"Yes."

"But you didn't."

"No."

"Why?"

Shen Yuan looked at his hand.

"Didn't understand it."

Silence.

Guest Nine smiled.

Small.

"Ji Cang took several centuries to learn that."

"Slow learner."

Xuankong laughed.

Gu Jian did too.

Even Guest Nine.

Then Shen Yuan looked toward the disciples.

Lin Yue.

Jian Wuchen.

Lu Chen.

Three.

All absurdly talented.

All carrying paths that could someday shake worlds.

And all—

still ridiculously early in cultivation.

Shen Yuan's gaze stopped on Lu.

Lu slowly stopped smiling.

"Master?"

"What realm are you?"

Lu hesitated.

"Technically?"

"That is usually how realms work."

Lu looked at Lin Yue.

No help.

Jian looked away.

Traitor.

Lu cleared his throat.

"Still establishing the first stable cultivation foundation."

Shen Yuan stared.

He had crossed into the Immortal Realm.

Met ancient disciples.

Cut karmic parasites.

Interacted with things beneath worlds.

And his third disciple still hadn't properly started cultivating.

Unacceptable.

The system appeared.

As if agreeing.

[Disciple Mission remains active.]

[Create first stable cultivation foundation for Primordial Chaos Spiritual Root.]

[Current Progress: 84%.]

Shen Yuan looked at Mo Tian.

Fourth Brother noticed.

"No."

"You haven't heard the question."

"I know that look."

"You have a Chaos Root."

"Had."

"Close enough."

Mo Tian pointed at himself.

"My cultivation is ruined."

"Your knowledge isn't."

"My path nearly killed me."

"Excellent."

Mo Tian stared.

"How is that excellent?"

"Now you know what not to teach him."

Silence.

Lu Chen looked between them.

"Should I be worried?"

Lin Yue answered:

"Yes."

Jian nodded.

"Definitely."

Shen Yuan smiled.

"Tomorrow."

Lu's face fell.

"Tomorrow what?"

"You start cultivating."

Lu blinked.

Then brightened.

"Finally!"

Mo Tian groaned.

"Poor child."

Dinner was quieter than expected.

For the first time in several days—

no ancient corpse awakened.

No higher realm contacted them.

No mysterious voice came from beneath the mountain.

No one asked Shen Yuan to kill them.

Chen An served rice.

Lu Chen ate three bowls.

Mo Tian ate five.

Xuankong complained that the wine was weak.

Chen An informed him that Cloudveil did not maintain eight-thousand-year-old drinking standards.

Gu Jian laughed.

Guest Nine sat beneath the eaves.

Not quite inside.

Not quite outside.

Shen Yuan noticed.

But said nothing.

Not tonight.

Later—

Jian stood alone near the training grounds.

The First Key floated above his palm.

He remembered the Fifth Guardian's words.

YOU ARE NOT FIRST.

Good.

He didn't want to be.

He was Jian Wuchen.

Not Ji Cang.

Not Gu Jian.

Not the ancient First Guardian.

Not even a replacement for Elder Jian Shou.

His Sword Heart pulsed.

The First Key responded.

Only slightly.

Enough.

Jian closed his hand.

One day—

the Ninth Gate would be his.

Not because a tomb predicted it.

Because he would create it.

At the Lunar Pool—

Moonfrost trembled.

Lin Yue opened her eyes.

The sword had been quiet since accepting her.

Now—

something moved inside.

A presence.

Sleeping.

Old.

The sword spirit.

Lin reached toward it.

The presence reacted.

Then—

rejected her.

Moonfrost flew from her hand.

It buried itself halfway into the stone.

Lin stared.

The sword spirit whispered one word.

"Wrong."

Lin Yue's eyes narrowed.

Interesting.

In the Chaos Body Refinement Chamber—

Lu Chen sat cross-legged.

He wasn't supposed to begin until tomorrow.

So technically—

he wasn't cultivating.

He was thinking about cultivating.

Completely different.

A gray strand of Primordial Chaos Qi appeared above his palm.

Stable.

For three breaths.

Four.

Five.

Lu grinned.

Then it exploded.

BOOM!

Half the chamber shook.

Outside—

Chen An stopped walking.

Closed his eyes.

Counted to three.

Then continued toward Shen Yuan's residence.

"Peak Master."

Shen Yuan looked up from his tea.

"Yes?"

"Your third disciple is not cultivating."

Shen Yuan became still.

Another explosion sounded.

Chen An continued:

"He is apparently thinking about cultivating."

Shen Yuan put down his cup.

"I see."

Far away—

the Immortal Realm remained sealed.

Senior Yao guarded the Fifth Wound.

Taihuang suppressed the descent routes.

The Listener withdrew from the damaged passage.

For now.

And somewhere far beyond Shen Yuan's perception—

something noticed that one of its attempts to interfere had been cut.

It did not descend.

It did not attack.

It did not reveal itself.

Only a faint signal touched the edge of the system.

For less than an instant.

[Unknown authority detected.]

Then—

gone.

Shen Yuan did not see it.

The system did not explain it.

And the world continued turning.

There would be time for that later.

Right now—

Shen Yuan had a training chamber to save.

And a disciple who had apparently misunderstood the meaning of "tomorrow."
